Are Today vaginal contraceptive pills effective to avoid pregnancy If my wife use it before intercourse?

Hello lybrate-user, I hope health wise you are doing good. Let me explain your doubt. Active ingredient of Today contraceptive is Nonoxynol 9. This is strictly for vaginal use only. This is 24 hour vaginal contraceptive measure to prevent the pregnancy but in clinical trials it has been noted that women got pregnant even after using this method in correct manner. I advice you, your wife can use Today vaginal contraceptive sponge but at the same time you should also use barrier method (condom). Your wife should not use Today vaginal contraceptive if 1) she had history of toxic shock syndrome 2) she is menstruating 3) she is allergic to nonoxynol 9. Your wife should stop using Today vaginal contraceptive if 1) you or your wife get rash, burning sensation or itching of genital parts. 2) your wife gets abdominal pain, foul smell vaginal discharge or fever with chills. 3) if she becomes pregnant. Your wife should not keep this Today vaginal contraceptive sponge more than thirty hours in vagina. She should not remove the sponge before 6 hours of last intercourse. No contraceptive measure gives 100% prevention from pregnancy. Each and every contraceptive method have their own failure rate. So be careful.
