Zoster or shingles is an extremely painful skin rash caused by the virus varicella zoster. They appear as band or strip on any one side of the body or face. The disease is also known as herpes zoster. When the virus that causes chickenpox becomes active in the body after a period of dormancy, zosters occur. Factors like ageing, excessive stress and certain medications often weaken the body’s immunity and the aid the virus in coming back to an active state. The symptoms develop in stages, beginning with flu like symptoms followed by itching and tingling in a particular area. At the final stage blisters filled with fluids appear on the skin accompanied by pain and itching.
HOW IS ZOSTER DIAGNOSED?
Risk factors multiply in case of people who have had radiation therapy and chemotherapy.
