Ideal sugar level during pregnancy should be maintained between 90 - 120 mg through out the day. Hence, 135 mg after food is high. Is she on any treatment? if not then she must start on minimal dosage of insulin (4 - 6 units a day) and bring the levels below 120 mg. In pregnancy high sugar is dangerous for the fetus as it may trigger macrosomia (large baby).

Mr. Lybrate-user, she has gestational diabetes, hence the doctor has prescribed insulin injections. That is the only option for treating diabetes in pregnancy. Taking insulin is the safest way and only way to treat this condition. If not treated, then fetal development is affected, there may be macrosomia (large baby), miscarriage. So she has to continue the treatment and her blood glucose should be maintained between 90 to 120 mg all throughout the day. Most often post delivery diabetes usually...more

lybrate-user, Thanks for the query.
As you have diabetes before pregnancy, it is essential to control it strictly with Insulin as being done now. Ideally blood glucose has to be maintained between 90 to 120 mg all through the day. (Fasting and PP). Your fasting looks good. What may be needed is to increase the Insulin dose pre lunch and Pre dinner by about 2 units. You will have to monitor glucose at least 4 to 6 times a day. Maintain a proper chart of Insulin dose and glucose level. Complic...more

Hello,

Go for protein powder without added sugar. Baby weight has to be monitored through serial scans because in diabetes, Macrosomia is quite common.

Monitor your blood sugar levels and go for regular antenatal care.

Hello, thanks for the query.
For a lady with preexisting diabetes, pregnancy does produce a lot of challenges. 1) there is a need for achieving a strict blood glucose control with glucose remaining between 90 to 120 mg through out the day. 2) just before conception there is a need to shift to insulin, because apart from metformin most other oral anti-diabetics are not preferred in pregnancy. 3) there is a need to check retina more often just before pregnancy and during the gestation. Because...more

lybrate-user, Thanks for the query.
The glucose levels mentioned are high, show presence of gestational diabetes.
Ideally Fasting should be <90 mg, PP after 1 hour < 130 to 140 mg/100 ml & 2 hour :<120 mg. These are normal values.
Gestational diabetes is diagnosed when fasting glucose is above 100.8 mg (your value is 108 mg), PP 1 hour above 153 mg (your value 174 mg/100 ml) & 2 hour > 140 mg (your value is 163 mg/100 ml). So you are having gestational diabetes. Therefore, blood gluc...more
