Myofibrillar myopathy affects the muscles of the body causing weakness, pain and discomfort. This condition is a part of a group of disorders known as muscular dystrophies. It mainly affects the skeletal muscles and sometimes even those of the heart. Myofibrillar myopathy occurs due to gene mutation and generally starts in midlife. It leads to weakness in the muscles, pain in the hands and legs, joint stiffness, loss of sensation and even respiratory failure. Very rarely, it can also cause the development of a cataract, a condition that affects the lens of the eye, thus hindering normal eye sight.
