Abandoned child syndrome usually affects the children who lose their parents, face sexual abuse or deep emotional trauma in their early childhood. Such children may show alienation from the environment, can be rebellious or withdrawn from social interactions or gatherings. Lack of due attention to the child's needs, abandonment, lack of care and malnutrition may also lead to symptoms like guilt that makes the child believe that he/she has done something grossly wrong or is undeserving. Such a psychological block can make the child insecure and hamper his/her emotional stability and growth, right into their adulthood. To be able to assist the child to overcome the syndrome, it is important to understand the root cause of the issue and get the child to release the pain caused by it.
