Benefits of yoga for Headache

Be it from stress, a hangover, tension, dehydration or any disorder of the head an entire day of an individual can get ruined because of a headache. People suffering from headache usually pop an over the counter pain killer to provide relief from the pain but taking pills for a long is not a solution rather it has serious side effects associated with it. Luckily there is yoga which provides a natural way to alleviate the problem of headache. Yoga provides help in headache by stimulating the nervous system through an improved blood circulation in the brain. The improved blood circulation enables fresh supply of oxygenated blood to the pain causing centers of the brain.

There are asanas in yoga which also help in calming a mind down in case of stress and anxiety. Yoga only provides a means for keeping the brain healthy. There have been studies which indicate that yoga can help in alleviating the problems of a migraine as well. Given below are some of the asanas that can help in solving the problem of headache in an individual.

Standing Forward Fold Or Uttanasana

Originally this yoga pose requires you to stand straight, bend forward, and, rest your head against your knees while you hold your ankle or the sides of your legs. But, when you perform this yoga to get relief from headache, you need to let your head hang down while your arms are completely loose. Bring your torso down from an upright position completely and let go of your arms and head. Inhale and exhale deeply and hold this position for 10 seconds.This yoga allows better blood circulation, thereby alleviating the symptoms of headaches.

Reverse Prayer Or Paschim Namaskarasana

You can start this yoga with some warm-up shoulder exercises till your shoulders and neck feel relaxed. Sit straight in a lotus position. Now place your arms behind your back. Move them up along the line of the spine as far as you can and make a Namaste with your palms. Certain types of headaches originate in the lower back of the head or the neck. This yoga helps to relax these areas and is a great stress-buster.

Seated Side Opener

Another pose that encourages better blood circulation. This is as easy to do as it is relaxing. Sit upright in a lotus position and spread your right hand along the floor as far as you can. Lift your left hand and bend it over your head. Bend your torso to the right side as well and hold the pose for ten seconds. Repeat the process with the other side.

Legs Up The Wall Or Viparita Karani

This yoga can be done with or without the support of a wall. Initially if you find it difficult, use the support. Lie down and stretch your legs along a wall from hip down to heels. Do not bend your knees. Your hands should rest beside you. If you do not use the wall, lift your legs off the ground as far as you can and support your hips with your hands.

Yoga needs to be complemented with a healthy and nutritious diet for alleviating the problem of headache. There are some food products which can heal headaches. Incorporating fish like salmon in the diet is a healthy option as it has omega 3,6, and 9 fatty acids. It is also rich in riboflavin and vitamin B which are helpful against headaches. Figs can be added to the diet as it is a rich source of potassium. Consuming shrimp also provide relief because it is a rich source of vitamins, minerals, and omega fatty acids.

Eating collard greens in the diet is a good option as it is a rich source of magnesium and helps in fighting pain. Drinking plenty of fluid is necessary for people having frequent headaches and migraines. Dehydration is one of the triggers of headaches. If anyone is under medical treatment for headaches like migraine then he/she must take his/her medicines regularly as advised by the doctor.
