Physiotherapy Balancing Activities for Ataxia in Sitting

GETTING UP FROM LYING TO SITTING POSITION

Generally it is noted that an ataxic patient has a tendency to log roll rather than to perform segmental rolling. This tendency should be inhibited and the patient should be encouraged to perform segmental rolling. Once the patient is able to efficiently go in to the side lying position, he is taught asymmetrical push up with the upper limb and then trained to lower the legs from the bed onto the floor so that he can assume the position of sitting at the edge of the cot.

SITTING BALANCE

Once the patient achieves good head and trunk control, the therapist should progress to incorporate activities that will put demand on the patient’s static and dynamic balance in sitting. The patient should be made to sit on a stable surface like cot or stool in a unsupported position and then the therapist gives gentle pushes in all directions.

Alternatively the patient may be asked to sit on unstable surface like a wobble board or vestibular ball without holding on to any support.

Once the patient develops good static balance dynamic balance can be trained by giving swaying and rotational activities in sitting. Reaching out activities also improves the dynamic balance in sitting. The patient is made to sit on a vestibular ball then he is asked to hold a cane or medicine ball in his hand which is held in elevated position above the shoulder and then the patient may be made to do various movements of the trunk. Thus the exercises can be made more complicated for the patient.

Performing various functional tasks like dressing, grooming or feeding needs lot of repetition and goes a long way in making the patient functionally independent. The therapist should be skillful enough in allowing the patient to master a particular type of activity before progressing into the next realm of exercises.

Autism Spectrum - How Homeopathy Can Help?

One of the best pleasures of life is to watch a child grow up and begin to learn and explore new things in the surroundings. However, children affected by autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or autism may not be able to do this at the same pace as other kids. They are a little slow to respond and may not socialise very easily.

ASD is a collective term used for a range of symptoms, including poor verbal and nonverbal communication, poor social skills, repetitive behaviour, and impaired learning abilities. The onset and severity of symptoms also vary across children. While some show symptoms in preschool, others would be completely normal and start showing symptoms after a couple of years of schooling. The following are some symptoms that indicate the child could have autism.

  1. Lack of babbling by 9 months of age
  2. No response when called by their name even after 12 months of age
  3. Not uttering single words by the age of 16 months, two words by 24 months
  4. Lack of social skills including resistance to cuddling, not mingling with other kids
  5. Self-injurious behaviour like banging head on the wall, hurting a toy, etc.

Homeopathy offers safe, effective remedy for children with autism. Treatment regime is highly customised based on underlying and accompanying symptoms of each patient. The following are commonly used ingredients; however, self-medication is best avoided.

  1. Agaricus: The child talks and sings but does not respond. There is indifference, fearlessness, shouting, constant jerking of the head, difficulty reading, possible double vision and feels awkward physically and mentally.
  2. Carcinosin: The child is obstinate and has compulsive obsessive tendencies. It is hyperactive, does not sleep, has addictive tendencies, and likes to drink milk which worsens the symptoms.
  3. Androctonus: The child is destructive, suspicious, mischievous, but very quick to respond. The child behaves very well at times and can be very naughty at other times.
  4. Helleborus: The child is generally weak, slow to respond, appears thoughtless, often stares into air, and looks depressed with involuntary sighing and habit of lip biting. Sight, hearing, and taste could be affected.
  5. Cuprum Metallicum: The child is extremely tense, irritable, rigid, malicious, and very difficult to handle. Does not like to be touched or spoken to or played with. Can be aggressive with the parents, driving them to despair.

May have tics infestation on the scalp.
Another recent approach is the CEASE (Complete Elimination Autism Spectrum Expression) Therapy. This combines homoeopathy with orthomolecular medicines that provide the required nutrition for brain development (vitamins, minerals, omega-3 fatty acids, etc.) This helps in overall brain development and restoring function in affected children. As noted, the right potency of these products will determine the response to treatment. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a homeopath.

And it might develop as atherosclerosis an inflammatory disease that causes thickening of the blood vessels neuropathy is of three types they are

A. Sensory neuropathy which affects the nerves carrying information around the body from the bones skin and muscles to the brain.

B. Motor neuropathy which damages the nerves that send information about movement

Autism Spectrum Disorder - How To Diagnose It?

Autism spectrum disorders are a group of severe neurological and developmental disorders which begin in early childhood and can last throughout a person’s life. It affects the ability to interact with others and also hinders communication and well as learning ability. A proper health center can diagnose the presence of autism spectrum disorder early on. Many tests are available for evaluation and diagnosis as it is a range of disorders which can have a variety of symptoms. The environment and genetics also play a role in the development of autism spectrum disorder but the exact cause of autism spectrum disorder is not yet known.

Symptoms of autism spectrum disorder:

  1. Your child may not be able to respond when called by his or her name by 12 months age.
  2. Will avoid eye contact and also have the desire to stay alone.
  3. Have trouble understanding or relating to other people or talk about their own feelings.
  4. Delayed speech and language skills which would affect the ability to speak.
  5. Show unusual reaction to sound, smell, taste or feelings.
  6. Answering questions with unrelated answers that have no meaning or link.
  7. Prefer to play alone and would avoid physical contact.

Diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder:

  1. Comprehensive Diagnostic Evaluation – The behavior of your child and development is first studied by the doctor in detail. The tests include genetic testing, neurological testing, hearing and vision testing among others. Doctors may also suggest other specialized tests in certain cases.
  2. Developmental Screening – The development of your child’s basic learning skills with respect to the age is checked. The doctor checks for some delays in the progress and will also monitor movement, behavior and speaking progress of the child. Some additional checks are also done for low birth weight, premature birth among other things.

Treatment:

  1. Applied behavioral analysis – This is a notable treatment and widely accepted by doctors all over the world. ABA is known to encourage positive behaviors and improves a variety of skills in a child.
  2. Occupational Therapy – Teaches the skills to live independently like eating, dressing and social skills. This can help people afflicted by autism spectrum disorders to lead a normal life within the society and thus relate to as well as interact with other people.
  3. Speech therapy – It improves and focuses primarily on communication skills and also uses picture boards and gestures to improve the abilities and induce learning skills.

Treatment Of Autistic Spectrum Disorders Through Homeopathy

Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD) is a name given to a range or spectrum of disorders characterised by various symptoms, skills and levels of disability. It is generally diagnosed within the first two years of a person’s life. Children with autism have delayed milestones, including delayed speech, sense of balance, and inconsistent or no eye contact. Children with ASD also develop limited skills in activities of daily living, including bathing, dressing, and toileting.

A major characteristic of autism is impairment in social functioning, as autism affects the ability to communicate, interact and respond in appropriate ways, thereby impairing social skills significantly. The unusual behaviour and response could be in the form of repetition of phrases or words, unusual tones and facial expressions, and inappropriate display of emotions.

There is no cure for autism as established by medical science. However, there are medications available to manage and treat various linked problems and medical issues like hyperactivity, anxiety, depression and seizures.

Management of autism is a lifelong and complex process. It is more of a journey than a destination. It is ambitious to expect quick results as no one drug or treatment can cause significant change. Treatment is often a combination of therapies and drugs. Daily care services, skill improvement and one-to-one support is extremely important in dealing with autism.

Homeopathy is seldom thought of as an alternate choice when it comes to autism. Homeopathy offers much more than one can think of; however, lack of knowledge about its vast scope and amazing benefits has limited its use among people. Research on the treatment of autism with homeopathy can come a long way, and this has already started showing positive results. Research on reversal of autism with homeopathy is also underway and would surely be a breakthrough in medical science.

Homeopathy is based on a holistic systems approach, which takes into account a constitutional picture of the person to be treated. The physical and mental makeup of each individual is different, and thus each individual responds to a problem in a different way. Homeopathic medication takes into account these differences while formulating a treatment plan. Homeopathic treatment has shown positive results for people with autism, including changes in language abilities, better eye contact, ability to focus, decreased levels of anxiety and repetitive behaviours, which has resulted in promising an overall increased level of social functioning. Homeopathic drugs like carcinosin, thuja and secretin are proven to be effective in treating many behaviors associated with autism.

Parents generally lack awareness regarding availability of this mode of treatment. Once the child is diagnosed, they panic and run to hospitals but hardly find any solutions. It is highly advisable to consult a homeopathic doctor and try out this effective and well researched course of treatment.

Role Of Physiotherapy In Peripheral Neuropathy!

Peripheral neuropathy (PN) is damage to or disease affecting nerves, which may impair sensation, movement, gland or organ function, and affects other aspects of health, depending on the type of nerve affected. The treatment by a physical therapist helps in reducing symptoms and improves an individual’s quality of life. As the cause, type, and symptoms of peripheral neuropathy can vary, the approach to care also varies. Physical therapy is helpful in maintaining strength, mobility, and function.

Strengthening exercises for peripheral neuropathy moderately improve muscle strength. Exercising can help, when done regularly. They further reduce the neuropathic pain and also helps in controlling the blood sugar levels.

Objectives of physiotherapy include:

  • Maintaining and improving functions via a range of motion through stretching.

  • Strengthening muscles which include exercising against increasing resistance, use of weights and isometric exercise.

  • Balance training helps in providing stability and prevents falls.

  • Braces or splints can be used to enhance balance and posture.

  • Splinting is used in the treatment of compression mononeuropathies, such as carpal tunnel syndrome.

Following recommendations and care are provided by physiotherapist:

  • Moderate intensity exercise- It helps to improve strength and physical function.

  • Never gliding activities- Includes exercises shown by a physiotherapist who will help you move and glide your nerves.

  • Balance and coordination activities - Your physiotherapist works on strategies to improve your balance and coordination. Improving balance and coordination helps to decrease your risk of falling and injuries that arise due to it. Balance exercises are a crucial part of the recovery of peripheral neuropathy. Balance training is important in overcoming the feeling of stiffness and unsteadiness, especially among elderly people.

  • Education – Your physiotherapist educates you on how to safely manage peripheral neuropathy. It mainly focuses on improving your safety, preventing further complications, and finding alternative ways to perform certain tasks.

  • Kinetic therapy in peripheral nerve injuries- It should not be started until the late stage of nerve regeneration when progressive strength return can be seen. After an injury to the nerve, physiotherapeutic methods are used to eliminate paresis and to restore normal function of muscles as well as to improve circulation.

  • Electrostimulation – It plays an important role in the treatment of various neuromuscular dysfunctions.

  • Magnetotherapy- It is used where a pulsed low-frequency magnetic field is applied. It has well-known effects on enhancing enzymatic activity, oxy-reductive processes and proper blood circulation resulting in better oxidation and conduction characteristics of regenerating peripheral nerves. It enhances the regeneration of nerve fibers.

  • Bio-laser stimulation- where low energy biostimulation lasers are used in palatial, continuous manner. Laser radiation can also be used to rejoin the nerve stumps.

Peripheral Neuropathy - How To Avoid It?

The sensation of pain and numbness are quite common in patients suffering from high blood sugar. If you are suffering from nerve damage from high blood sugar, chances are you have diabetic peripheral neuropathy. The discomfort can affect your mood and overall quality of life. But with some easy to follow steps can help you keep peripheral neuropathy under control.

  1. Keep your blood sugar levels under control: Your first task is to manage your blood sugar levels under control and with the passage of time it will damage the peripheral nerves and pave the way for diabetic neuropathy. If you can keep your blood sugar levels within a healthy range, you will be able to reduce the risk of nerve damage by about 60 percent. You should talk to your doctor first since a rapid drop in the blood sugar levels can prove to be even worse.
  2. Get the right level of Vitamin D: Your skin functions by producing Vitamin D in response to sunlight and it is immensely helpful in shielding against nerve pain. It has been found people who have lower levels of this nutrient are more likely to suffer from more pain. In case it is hard to get the recommended daily intake from food only, you will have to take supplement pills.
  3. Keep away from smoking: We all know that smoking causes the blood vessels to constrict which hampers circulation. If you don’t quit smoking, your peripheral nerves may not be able to nutrient-rich blood which would make pain worse.
  4. Take a warm bath: Warm water is not just relaxing, it can also improve circulation all through the body. It can provide instant relief. But it is worthy of mention here that since diabetic neuropathy leads to loss of sensation, you should ensure that the water isn’t too hot before you jump in.
  5. Seek resort to over the counter medications: There is a host of painkillers available for easing mild to moderate ache stemming from diabetic neuropathy. These include ibuprofen, aspirin, naproxen and acetaminophen. But before taking any of these pills, you should consult with an expert who can choose the right medicine for you.
  6. Get up and move: Exercise can combat pain in a variety of ways. It helps in keeping blood sugar levels under control which, in turn, can hinder nerve damage. Workout increases blood flow to the extremities while also uplifting your mood. It will help you get rid of stress so that you can better deal with the symptoms of peripheral neuropathy. In a study conducted by the University of Kansas, it was found that people who exercise regularly didn’t face any trouble in doing daily activities.
  7. Consider carpal tunnel surgeryWhen the patient is suffering from localized peripheral nerve compression that affects the hands, carpal tunnel surgery can be considered as a last resort to achieve pain relief, reduced incidence of ulceration, increased range of movement and balance, preservation of limbs and improved quality of life.

With these few tips, you will be able to manage the peripheral neuropathy better.
