primary osteoarthritis is a part of ageing. but secondary arthritis can be following any fractures involving the joint surface, following infection in the joint and also secondary to inflammatory arthritis.

osteoarthritis doesnt always equate to ageing. it can also affect younger individuals who have risk factors like obesity, repetitive trauma and in people who have had infections in the joint. If you are obese then you can reduce your weight and quadriceps strengthening exercises can help in the early stages

aging is one of the risk factors. other risk factors include obesity, repeated stress to the joints and high impact activities. genetics also plays a role. the things you can do is reduce your body weight and also do exercises to tone the muscles around the joint which helps in load sharing.
