Generally, as per old sayings of old wives, a woman facing severe morning sickness in her first trimester of pregnancy, she is having higher chances of a baby girl. This theory behind carrying a baby girl is challenged by Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, where she found that many women had given birth to baby boys who suffered from severe morning sickness. Scientifically, the higher amounts of hormones such as hCG and estrogen in the body are worsening the morning sickness in women.

Expected mother may experience blisters or rashes, spots and pimples on her skin during her gestation phase, which is also taken as a symptom of having a baby girl. But as pregnancy is a time of blooming, there are many changes in skin can be observed. These changes in skin of mothers are caused because of hormonal imbalance or changes in hormone levels. Another factor leading to such symptoms is heavy blood volume in body of mother that is required for development of the baby. So if mom is having a clear and pimple free skin then she will have a baby boy otherwise a baby girl.

Shape of belly is always plays an important role in assuming the gender of baby as per old wives. For a future baby girl, a woman will carry baby’s weight in the middle and if it is carried in the front then it will be a baby boy. The size of mom during pregnancy is considered by many women for determining the sex of the baby. As per science, this symptom will not assure about having a baby girl as it may also have an impact due to multiple pregnancies affecting on elasticity of belly.

If expecting mom is having sudden or unpredictable change in mood, it is taken as a sign of having a baby girl. This symptom includes extreme irritability, depression, and anger representing having possibility of pregnancy of a girl baby. Again hormonal imbalance or changes in hormones come into picture which is found as a basic reason behind such symptoms. It is true in many cases where women with baby girl are experiencing more mood swings as compared to women with baby boy.

It is assumed that a mother carrying a baby girl in her womb has left breast bigger in size as compared to right one. Now, there is a time period of nine months during whole pregnancy and in the last trimester, milk forming glands are growing at higher rates. If there is a use of wrong sized bra or other garments, the support needed by breasts is not given, causing improper sizes of breasts. There is an observation done by many mothers telling that the growth of left side breast will be faster if she is carrying a baby girl.

Midwives and expectant mothers believing some old myths and following its acceptance in today’s world. If a woman loves to eat garlic and her body odor does not change and remains normal, then she is expecting a girl. But after eating such garlic clove if her skin stinks to high heaven or smell of garlic seeps out from her pores then she will have a baby boy.

When mother awakes from rest or after sleep, it is advised by other women to remember at what side she had slept all the time till she awakes. It is assumed that mother sleeping on her right side gives birth to a girl and if she sleeps on left side then she welcomes baby boy. This sign is always observed mostly in the second and third trimester but as the baby grows, many times women are experiencing fatigue and extreme tiredness and maybe it is not possible to sleep on particular side.

Many women are relying on skull theory that is coming from knowing the shape of skull of unborn baby present in the womb. Baby boys are having larger or blockier foreheads in the scan while rounded jaws and tapered heads are seen for baby girls. This method only depends on guessing sex of the unborn baby by viewing his head structure and shape in the ultrasound. This theory is used for just entertainment purpose and it is not accepted scientifically.

Urine color is taken as a tool for determining sex of a baby and it is said by old wives. If woman pee in the morning and its color is dark or bright yellow then it is a baby boy carried by expected mother. But if she passes urine that has color of dull yellow then definitely she will have girl child.

There are many traditional belief from which baking powder test is the one in which baking powder is used for detecting the gender of baby. The process of performing test is, woman need to collect first-morning urine in a container without consuming any drink or food and then equal quantity of baking soda powder is added. Under such condition, if fizzes are seen then it is considered as sign of boy and if remains same then it is baby girl. This test is not 100% accurate as pH of urine depends on diet, hydration level, UTI and kidney stones.
