What is the treatment?

Stress, when defined commonly, refers to the feeling that a person may experience when they are overloaded (mostly emotionally and psychologically) and they are struggling to cope up with the demands of everyday life, whether personal or professional. Stress is actually a mechanism of the body by which it protects you. When a person perceives danger, the body’s defenses start working and they exhibit a rapid, automatic response known as the ‘ fight or flight response’ or the ‘stress response’. When a person feels threatened, the nervous system releases a number of stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol and these prepare the body for an emergency response. The manifestations of this condition include increased heart beat, muscle tightening, high blood pressure, quicker breaths and sharpening of senses. These changes help a person to focus, speed his/her reaction time and also increases strength and stamina.

Stress can manifest itself in a number of different ways. The cognitive symptoms of stress include memory problems, anxiety, poor judgement, constant worrying and negative thoughts. The emotional symptoms may include depression, moodiness, anxiety, loneliness and isolation, a feeling of being overwhelmed and other mental problems. The physical symptoms include aches, pains, nausea, dizziness, loss of sex drive, rapid heartbeat and chest pain.

Some of the ways by which stress can be managed are being aware of how much stress a person is under, determine which factors are causing stress to increase in your life, taking charge and deal with the unhelpful sources of stress before they snowball into something unbearable and making prudent choices regarding your life so that he/she can deal with stress better. However, sometimes,a person may be prescribed sleep inducing pills or anxiety management medications if they are having too much difficulty in coping with stress.

One of the most effective ways to deal with stress is to lead an active lifestyle. Doctors all over world advise people to incorporate some exercises in their routine so that they can better deal with stress. Regular exercise helps to elevate the mood and allows you escape from the cycle of negative thoughts that cause stress. Exercises like running, jogging, walking, swimming and cycling help you to deal with stress effectively. If a person is feeling agitated or insecure, there is no better way to relieve stress than to have a face-to-face conversation with another human being. A friendly conversation with another human being helps to calm and soothe the nervous system. A person without any close social relationships should make it a point to develop strong bonds.

Engaging any of your five senses namely- touch, sight, sound, smell and taste can help to effectively deal with stress. A person might get de-stressed by eating or someone might feel relaxed by listening to his/her favorite song. Similarly, relaxation techniques like yoga, meditation and deep breathing help a person to reach a state of restfulness that is complete opposite to the state of feeling stressed. Regular practice of these techniques will help a person to deal with the symptoms of stress more effectively.

Finally, a healthy diet can go a long way to help a person to deal with stress. Food eaten can help to improve or worsen a person’s mood and so, it is imperative to include foods rich in proteins, fresh vegetables and fruits in the diet. Stress can be dealt with a proper night’s sleep. However, people are often prescribed medicines to deal with anxiety and depression by a doctor.

Who is eligible for the treatment? (When is the treatment done?)

Any person can suffer from stress as it a normal bodily reaction to feelings of demand or threat. The treatment for stress normally does not include any medication but involves making substantial changes in the lifestyle of the concerned person. So a person is eligible for treatment of stress if he/she experiences the symptoms associated with stress. There can be different types of manifestations of the symptoms of stress. They are physical, cognitive, emotional and behavioral. A person can undergo treatment if he/she experiences any of these symptoms.

The side-effects of anti-depressants include headache, sexual dysfunction, diarrhea, dizziness and weight gain/loss. The behavioral therapy and lifestyle changes do not produce much side-effects.

It is difficult to point out the post-treatment guidelines for stress as the condition requires constant monitoring and management. However, there are some guidelines that a person can follow to prevent stress after he/she has undertaken stress management procedure and taken medications. These are: reducing intake of alcohol, drugs and caffeine as these substances make the condition worse. A person should be a little organized and focus on what is important rather than losing their sleep over trivial issues. A person should put some time aside for himself/herself each day so that he/she can use that time to relax, organize and do whatever he/she wants to do.

How long does it take to recover?

Stress is a condition where a person’s body responds to perceptions of stress or danger. It is essentially an emotional and psychological condition that can be triggered by a number of ways. A person can use stress management techniques, self-help techniques and medication to keep stress at bay. But the recovery depends on the resolve of the patient and also on his ability to address the root of the problem. Hence, it is difficult to determine how long it will take to overcome stress.

Hormones are vital for the human body. They are basically chemicals released into the bloodstream and travel from one cell to another. They travel through the blood and assist organs in performing numerous functions of the human body. Hormones are responsible for a wide range of activities like growth, puberty, facial hair, stress, mood, reproduction, sleep, reproduction and many more. They are also found in other organisms like plants and animals.

Hormones are secreted by endocrine glands. The endocrine glands include pituitary, adrenal and thyroid glands. The study of the endocrine system and hormones is known as endocrinology. Also, some major diseases are caused by hormone imbalance in the human body. The functions or activities of the body affected by hormone secretion are:

  • Growth and development
  • Metabolism
  • Mood
  • Sexual functions like menstruation, fertility, reproduction.
  • Blood Sugar level

Some vital hormones affecting human health:

  • Estrogen: Also known as the female hormone and responsible for a lot of functions and activities associated with a female body. They are secreted by ovaries and are primarily responsible for reproduction, menopause, puberty, moods and even sleep. High level of estrogen production is rare and mostly occurs because of oral contraceptives. Low level of estrogen is more common among girls and women alike. However, the most common disease experienced by females is PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome). Imbalance of hormones will mostly lead to hair loss, acne, depression and even osteoporosis. You can start by taking supplements like vitamin B complex and magnesium or sometimes even undergo hormonal treatment.
  • Testosterone: It is the male sex hormone. However, they are present in low quantities in females too. The testosterone is responsible for muscle growth and developmental functions. They also control puberty in males, facial hair, libido, erectile functions and formation of sperm. Imbalance can lead to depression, mood swings, insomnia, erectile dysfunction and also acne and hair loss. Excessive secretion of testosterone in females leads to increased hair growth and deepening of the voice. Moreover, regular drinking and smoking may lead to decrease production of testosterone among males.
  • Cortisol: It is one of the many hormones secreted by the adrenal glands. They are responsible for physical, stress regulation, maintenance of the immune system and inflammation, etc. High level of cortisol can lead to stomach ulcers, high blood pressure, fatigue, anxiety and depression. Low level of cortisol may lead to chronic fatigue syndrome and even alcoholism.
  • Insulin: It is one of the most important hormones in the human body and is produced by the pancreas. Insulin is responsible for breaking down carbohydrates in the body and maintaining blood sugar level. Its job is to use the sugar (glucose) from carbohydrates and convert it into energy. An imbalance of insulin leads to high blood sugar level (hyperglycemia) or low blood sugar level (hypoglycemia). Such imbalances can lead to diabetes in humans which vary depending on the blood sugar level of the body.
  • Growth Hormones: They are secreted by the pituitary glands of the body. The hormones are responsible for growth and development in children and teenagers. They are also responsible for proper functioning of the heart, muscle development, metabolism and many more. Imbalances can lead to stunted growth in children. Consult your doctor for ways to boost growth in your child.

Yes, these could be symptoms of depression but I think it is an anger related kind. Usually depression is accompanied by anxiety and fear. If this bothers you too much you must seek professional help from a doctor and a counselor in tandem. In the meantime you can use some of these tips: Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber, nuts, avocado, exercise regularly, eat dark chocolate, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. I suggest you do the opposite of what this depression makes you feel like doing (actually, not doing): you will need to fight this condition. You must become active; stay upright during the daylight time; meet people; never sleep during the day, wake up by 6 am every day, play some active games, especially contact games, do physical exercises, talk to people and join some social clubs, attend Yoga classes etc. Watch sitcoms on TV or comedies and cheer yourself up. Go for excursions in groups, for outings, camps, conferences, and religious conventions. Get a pet dog and spend time training it, exercising it and relating to it. Expose yourself to some sunlight every day, at least, 30 minutes but not in the scorching heat. Whatever happens, please incorporate these three important adaptations in your life: always be responsible, be respectful, and be functional. If you did these three, lots of things will go well in life. Please pray and have faith in God to alleviate your sufferings. Don’t wait for others to help. Use your own motivation, which might be at its lowest, but persevere and win this battle. Above all to be really happy, you need to live in love and for love. Learn all about emotions and how to handle them and that will get you out of the depression rather easily and quickly. A counselor is there only to facilitate you, all the hard word must come from you, and your cooperation with that person is very critical for your success. Be positive every day and learn to be contented with what you have. Do some left brain exercises: it is the happy brain. Here are a few suggestions: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. Whatever happens please cooperate with the therapy and do not discontinue until the condition is completely resolved.

Hello, I am 27 year old, my major problem is, I forget whatever I have read or studied within a minutes or second. The name and words specially, it takes lots of time and practice to memorise any thing to me but they not stored in my mind if I do not practice them. I am a student and I am preparing for government exams. I was suffering from typhoid 3 year back, I am a pure vegetarian even I do not eat eggs, I have no any bad addiction like smoking, drinks and all I never done this in my life, then why this happened with is there any cure for this due to this I am facing problem to focus on my study even I don't have any stress problem, I have only stress of losing my memory power please suggest me or prescribe any best medicine which show me results faster my exams are very near I can't take any chance. Dear Lybrate user. I can understand. Memory and mind power depends on three aspects. Understanding, retention and recollection. Recollection is easy if your retention is proper and flawless. Retention is possible when you are able understand what you read or learn. To understand you should have concentration. Concentration comes from effective learning techniques based on creative and active learning. Physical exercise, outdoor games, entertainment, socializing coupled with systematic learning improves your memory and mind power. Vegetables, fruits and nuts are perfect for memory. Brain games like sudoku and jigsaw puzzles helps too. Avocados, Beetroots, Blueberries, Broccoli. Celery, Coconut Oil, Dark Chocolate etc are good for improving concentration and memory. Hello the above mentioned symptoms are indicative of stress. Stress causes nerves to stretch and bring bodily symptoms of pain. Try deep breathing exercises and meditation to relax your mind. Also try consulting a clinical psychologist for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Hello all, My problem is kind of weird. I suddenly feel anxious of taking stress or tension of Unnecessary things. I always feel that whether I am breathing and living life. Even though I know this is natural process still I am not convinced by the fact. Kindly let me know if you know any physiological way to overcome the issue. Sometimes I am getting Panic attack due to this.

Tremors, feeling anxious or nervous, sense of panic, sweating, increased heartbeat, feeling of impending doom, stomach discomfort, dizziness etc are signs of anxiety. These can be debilitating. If the anxiety us overwhelming, consult a psychiatrist at the earliest. With the right medication and counseling, it is likely your symptoms will improve.

Today we are here to know the management of stress and anxiety and its treatment.

The first question is what is stress?

Stress is that how our body and mind reacts to the life situations. So it may be Eustress or Distress.

Sometimes it helps us to move forward in our life. For example, during exams, we develop stress but due to that stress, our attention, concentration increases and we are able to finish things fast, we can learn fast and we can perform well. So this kind of positive stress is called Eustress.

But when the stress level increases, suppose, you have a capability of 10 and you have given work of 13 magnitudes, then your performance will go down and you will not be able to work or concentrate properly. So, this excessive stress is called Distress.

We can do something with our lifestyle to help reduce stress.

Switch off television and the internet at least one hour before sleep so that your mind is at rest before sleep.
Don t use excessive caffeine. Caffeine is there in tea, coffee, cold drinks and chocolates.
Do not take more than two cup of tea. If you are taking more cups of tea there will be more anxiety, lack of sleep which will further increase your anxiety.
In student we see such a thing. In exam they remain awake, take excessive caffeine in the form of tea and coffee develop excessive anxiety which reduces their concentration and disturb their sleep. So we need to watch it over.
We need to take some exercises like cardiac exercises in reducing stress and anxiety, some yoga technique we can follow.
Fix your meal timings and engage in some sports activities.
Many people think ayurvedic and homoeopathic treatment bring a cure. So I am not denying their role in managing these things but if you are not getting benefit then switch to allopathic treatment. There is no harm in that and it brings great relief within one or two months. We have many patients who have improved like anything.
The third barrier in the treatment is stigma. People think if we are going to the psychiatrist for treatment we are mad. Actually you are not. The person who develops stress and anxiety problems actually are smarter than other person and that is why they have developed anxiety problem, that is why they are worrying and anticipating more. After eating so much of junk food, they feel guilt and that guilt leads to stress and that stress again make the person eat, so this is the basic cycle which is going through. So, we are dealing with emotional eating, food addiction, alcohol addictions, stress, anxiety, depression, even any kind of stress or as we know in our lives, there are so many ups and downs because of many reasons, related to health, related to personal problems, personal life, even, family lives.
