Stained Teeth: Treatment, Cost and Side Effects

What is the Stained Teeth?

The colour of the teeth is actually dependent upon certain natural factors and some genetic too. Dentin is the layer that is mostly responsible for the colour of the teeth. Dentin is actually yellow-brown in colour and is covered by a very hard layer called enamel which is white in colour. Enamel is responsible for the bluish, pinkish or yellowing tinge of the teeth. The core of the tooth is known as dental pulp which is pink or red in colour due to the presence of blood vessels. But colour of teeth is not influenced by this layer at all. The causes of stained teeth are some foods and drinks like tea, coffee, wines, coloured carbonated drinks, apples etc. Chewing and smoking excessive tobacco also causes the teeth to change colour. Certain medications like antibiotics such as doxycycline and tetracycline can discolour teeth in children below 8 years. Several mouth washes containing cetylpyridinium chloride and chlorhexidine also stain teeth. Certain antipsychotic drugs, antihistamines and high blood pressure medications have also been reported to stain teeth. Maintain poor dental hygiene like not brushing and flossing properly after meals is also responsible for teeth staining. Stained teeth can also be a result of some diseases like some infections during pregnancy, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Stains on teeth can be of different types. For example, extrinsic teeth stain wherein staining of teeth occurs on the outer surface of the teeth. A thin layer of deposition occurs on the teeth surface due to excessive tobacco consumption, tea, coffee or wine. Intrinsic staining of teeth occurs when the staining particles affect the inside of the enamel. Teeth stains also occur due to increasing age as the enamel thins down with age. There are some treatment options to whiten teeth and remove the stains on the teeth. Teeth stains can be removed by treatment options like veneers, bondings, over the counter whitening products, brushing and flossing properly etc.

How is the Stained Teeth treatment done?

There are several treatment options for stain removal from teeth. Adopting healthy dental habits, brushing and flossing after every meal helps wash off any possible stain or plaque development on the teeth. Dentifrices are devices that use a detergent or an abrasive or an antitartar agent for teeth whitening. Tooth brushing with dentifrices helps keeping extrinsic staining at bay. Professional tooth cleaning involves ultrasonic cleaning, air-jet polishing with abrasive powder and rotary polishing with abrasive paste. In another technique called enamel microabrasion a mixture of silicon carbide and weak hydrochloric acid is applied on the teeth with help of a rotary. Enamel microabrasion gives a glazed appearance on the teeth. The technique removes intrinsic teeth stains that cause by decalcifications, fluorosis etc. Bleaching stained teeth involves vital bleaching and non-vital bleaching. Vital bleaching involves bleaching teeth that have turned yellow or brown due to intrinsic discoloration and fluorosis. Bleaching of stained teeth is also done with hydrogen peroxide and carbamide and is done quite carefully to protect the soft tissue from the harmful effects of the bleaching agents. Whitening strips are also available in the markets that are impregnated with hydrogen peroxide. These strips can be used at home to maintain the already whitened teeth. Nonvital bleaching is done by placing a mixture of sodium perborate and 30% hydrogen peroxide in the pulp chamber of the tooth for about a week. Surgical procedures like dental caries or materials removal is carried out if stains occur due to such objects. Sometimes teeth stains may also require dental implants and dental extractions.

Tooth Decay
Detailed description on Tooth decay

Hi I'm Dr. Vikash, an Endodontist and Senior Consultant at Ethical Dental and Health Care, Sector-1004, Noida. Today I'm going to discuss about the most common disease in the world, that is Tooth Decay.

Inside everyone's mouth there is a war going on. Our tooth is under attack by various bacterias. These bacterias grow a layer called plaque. It is an invisible battle because bacterias are of same color as our tooth and they hide in hard to reach areas of our mouth like gum line and between tooth. Plaque bacteria attack on sugary tooth. They turn sugar into acid and acid into enamel. This is where our body fights back thanks to saliva. Saliva is full of minerals that replaces the tooth structures dissolved away by plaque acids. It takes about 20mins for the minerals to get back in balance after a meal. But if more minerals are taken away than replaced then enamel collapses and bacteria can get into tissue below. This causes cavity and the tooth is in trouble.

Bacteria will start rotting the dent in the enamel causing tooth decay. WHen decay hits sensitive area you get tooth decay. By now enamel is completely undermined. Although only a dentist can remove bacteria from cavity but you can play your own part in the battle. If you cut off in between meal snacks and regularly remove bacterias with brush and floss, then by this you will be helping your body win the war against tooth decay.

About Tooth Implants
Hello, everybody, I am Dr Priyanka Puri. I have been practising for the past 12 years. My specialization is aesthetic and cosmetic dentistry and I m an implantologist also.

So today we are going to talk about implants which is a hot topic nowadays for patients and for practising doctors also. So when is that you can have an implant in your mouth. You can have an implant in your mouth when you have a missing tooth. Like you can see in a model here. There is one tooth that is missing. This is a lower molar. In actual the teeth are placed like this in your mouth. So there are the roots, there is the crown and where there is a missing tooth you can see the empty socket here. So when you have a missing tooth in your mouth there are ways to replace it and with the latest technology, we can have a fixed tooth in your mouth which has no relation to your adjacent teeth.

What is an implant?

Implant is nothing but titanium screw. As you can see in this model. The implant is a titanium screw which is made up of titanium and titanium has this unique property of binding with your Alveolar bone. This is how an implant is placed in your socket and this is how it will be inside your bone and as we are talking about the lower jaw we put this implant in your lower jaw bone. We leave it there for three months in case of lower bone and in case of upper bone for six months and this time period is very important for the implant to re-mineralise to reintegrate to become the part of your bone. This is the unique property of titanium and after that what we can do is we can give you a cap with which you can apply all the masticatory forces and you can eat with this tooth. As you can see in the model it is independent of your front and back tooth. It has no relation with your front and back tooth. It is totally independent. And you can see from inside also. This complete procedure takes about three months for the lower jaw and around six months for the upper jaw in case there are no bone deformities, there are no bony disturbances.

One of the important concerns or things which would like to confirm from the patients is the sugar levels, and his or her habits. Because of sugar if it is not at the level if it is fluctuating sugar levels. Then implants success rate will go down and in case you are a heavy smoker then also implants success rates will also go down. But otherwise, implants have a success rate of 90 to 95% all over the world. So it s great of restoring your missing tooth.

Tooth Sensitivity

Hello friends, my name is Dr Aishna Sharma, today I am going to discuss about the topic that is very common and in general everyone suffers from it and that is, tooth sensitivity.

Tooth sensitivity is basically any kind of pain due to extremes (hot and cold) food or drinks or even with a blow of air. Now first of all going deep into this topic you musyt understand the tooth structure, that is a tooth it consists of three layers;

The outermost layer enamel, that is considered to be the hardest substance on the eart, other than the diamond.
Now, after enamel comes dentin. Dentin is considered to be the softer substance.
It has tubules in it. Tubules that starts from the outer layer of the dentin and ends up to the pulp.
This dentin and inside dentin is the pulp. The pulp or the nerve tissue, this nerve tissue consist if sensations, and with whatever we eat whatever we have all the sensation is passed through the nerves and it reaches through the dentin and then it reaches to the enamel. Now whenever we have sensitivity it means that the tooth structure is lost because of many reasons. Now first and foremost reason is the loss of gum tissue. The loss of gum tissue can occur when we take some very acidic things like pepsi, coke or any aerated drink. So in that case our gum tissues are soft in nature, that gets lost. So when it gets lost the lower part of the tooth that is the root of the tooth, it gets exposed and it is sensitive in nature so obviously you will have sensitivity in that area. The sensitivity is not in the tooth structure it is in the root area. Now, other reason of sensitivity is decay. Decay is the most common.

When you will have decay?

First and foremost you will get to know about decay when your food will get lost when the food will get lost only in the outer surface of the tooth, that is the enamel, you won t have any sensitivity you will just have the complain of getting the food lost, but when it reaches the dentin, you will definitely have sensitivity. The first sensitivity you are going to have is cold, after that hot and after that when it is very near to the nerves, you will have sensitivity to sweets. Now, this is how this process of decay stats from sensitivity and ends up in pain because when you reach the nerve, you will experience pain. Other reason of sensitivity is fracture, when the tooth gets fractured, so obviously in fractured case also the dentin is getting exposed and even at times the pulp or the nerve tissue gets exposed. So all the sensation, whatever you eat or drink gets passed on to the tooth directly to the inside of the tooth directly and you will have sensation of hot and cold, even to sweets.

Now, what is the treatment line for tooth sensitivity?

The first and foremost line and the most common treatment line people do at home is the desensitizing paste, nowadays there are so many advertisements coming on national television. So, desensitizing paste is something that you have to use regularly and slowly you will attain the result. But, ya if you don t get results with the desensitizing paste, you have to come to the clinic. To the doctor s place and you have to get the treated by the fluorited toothpaste that the doctor will recommend. Even after that if you are not getting relieved, then you haveto go for the filling that filling is medicated filling. Even at times if it is your bad luck that you don t even get relief with the filling then you have to go for the root canal only after that the sensitive tooth will be relieved.

For further detail on this topic, you can call me and chat with me. There is live chat option also on librate.com and you can visit our clinic that is Rohini Dental Care and it is in sector 31 Gurgaon. Rest, you can get from the Lybrate.

Treatments for Crooked teeth
Hi, I am doctor Ayush Sharma. I am a specialist in orthodontics and in facial orthopaedics. I deal basically in braces in young children and adults as well.

Most of the eager children must be noticing that their children have got crooked teeth. The reason for this is evolutionary changes, the jaw size is decreasing, the number of teeth are still the same, the dietary changes. All these are causing the teeth to become more and more crowded. The reason is that of the jaw size and the tooth size relationship. It is not matching anymore. This is why you must be observing that the milk teeth are not falling at the right time whereas the permanent teeth are getting more and more delayed. The solution for this is we need to have regular check ups for our children so that this problem can be solved at an earlier stage. If the child comes to us at an earlier stage, we have more treatment options and the bone is less mature so we can perform better procedures such as braces and other orthopaedic appliances which help in enhancing the jaw growth so that all the teeth can be accommodated well and your child can have a perfect smile.

In earlier days, we only had the option of getting metallic braces done but with the advancement and the recent technologies that has resulted in tooth coloured braces, invisible braces, lingual braces and more and more advancements which make the treatment very comfortable for your child and this does not limit you to a child treatment as well, but it has enhanced and even adults can get their crooked teeth corrected by us which results in better smiles, healthier teeth and longevity of the teeth as well.

If you have any queries regarding your crooked smile, irregularly placed teeth or you are not happy with your chewing ability, you can definitely contact me through liberate or contact me via my phone number, via my email or message me.
