Depending on health and injury pattern this bone can take 3-4 months to heal without surgery. Physical therapy for knee range of motion is started around 6 weeks once bone has healed enough to prevent displacement with motion.

If the pain is not exaggerated, then your mother can move legs and that too at limited angle cautiously.
If swelling in leg(s) especially below knee is observed, then raise the leg(s) more than 45° by keeping pillows under them.
Diet should be kept at nominal intake of semi-solid or liquid food (After every 2-4 hrs gap). Also take care for any of gastric issues.
Proper rest is required.

If the limping becomes worse, not better, over the first 2 weeks, or if the pain persists, you should return to be rechecked. Most children do not need physical therapy to walk or move normally again. Routine activities and play is usually enough for children to return to normal within a few weeks to months.
