Hypnotherapy In Smoking Cessation

Smoking is a die hard habit and many people eventually die of the same. It remains one of the most common causes of cancer and lung diseases, which eventually lead to death. The irony is that almost all smokers know the harmful effects, but find it hard to quit.

With a firm determination, there are people who quit, but then the relapse rate is quite high too.

  • Many believe that quitting requires a behavioural change. From peer pressure to a lifestyle habit, smoking is a social phenomenon. There are various methods to help quit smoking like quitting cold turkey and nicotine substitutes. Hypnosis is also gaining popularity as a method to help quit smoking. Research has shown an encouraging success rate in the range of 30 to 40% in cases where the desire and commitment to quit are high. This of course is with people who have strong will and are able to be hypnotized.
  • Hypnosis or hypnotherapy is a psychological technique used as supplemental therapy in a lot of cases, such as weight loss, depression, speech disorders, pain management, de-addiction; the list can be quite long.  It puts the person undergoing therapy into a deep sleep or trance, where they get in touch with themselves and find answers to a lot of questions. It is believed that while hypnosis puts a person to sleep, it also induces a higher level of cognition and a higher level of neurological activity.
  • During the actual session, the smoker is asked to imagine the numerous ill effects of smoking and the need to reduce its harmful effects on the body. This improves the willpower to quit smoking and reduces the desire. They are also advised of the benefits of quitting smoking, including longevity of life and better quality of life. The person is told that quitting smoking before 50 years of age gives a 50% chance of increasing the lifespan by 15 years. Now that is quite motivating for a lot of smokers to give up the habit.
  • It generally takes about 4 full sessions of hypnotherapy to reach a level where the patient is ready to kick the habits. Also, self hypnosis can be taught where the person can go into hypnosis on his own and enforce smoking cessation. There are even self hypnosis tapes that are available for aid.

However, a word of caution here, hypnosis is not for everybody as not everybody can be hypnotized easily and there has to be a strong belief that it will benefit, only then can smoking cessation be tried with hypnosis. It is still in the testing phase and is to be medically proven as a way to quit smoking.

How Along with Psychiatric Therapy You Can Improve Your Memory?

Psychiatry is not just a form of medicine to identify and treat psychiatric illness, but it also helps in improving attention, cognition, memory, and concentration. Psychiatry has a role in different fields and working in the field of memory improvement is quite interesting. Memory is basically the process through which a person stores information for days, months and years.

The human brain is a dynamic entity and has a wonderful capacity to store information and recall it as and when required. However, our memory is affected by a number of reasons, such as aging, accidents, negligence and certain diseases, which involves our brain and nervous system. Further, the memory of an event will improve, based on the frequency at which it has been recalled.

Apart from the frequency of recall, psychiatry can also help a person to improve the capacity of the brain and sharpen their memory to store incidents or events for a prolonged period of time.

How along with psychiatric therapy you can improve your memory

  1. Improving your concentration while doing any work will naturally improve your memory. Doing things with concentration will help us in storing information for a longer period of time.
  2. Relieving your mind from stress or anxiety is also a great way to improve your memory as stress has the ability to hamper your memory.
  3. Eating a balanced and nutritious diet is essential for better memory. For increasing the memory power, psychiatrists insist on a diet which is anti-inflammatory, rich in protein and Omega-3 fatty acids.
  4. A simple 20-minute exercise routine will not just help you to stay fit physically, but mentally as well.
  5. It also important to sleep properly, as sleep helps your mind and body to prepare for the next day. It is also advised to have a short nap in the afternoon to improve your brain functioning during the day time.
  6. Smoking and frequent consumption of caffeine also hamper your memory, thus, it is advised that one should quit smoking and reduce the consumption of caffeine.

Sinusitis And Siddha Therapy - Know How Can It Help!

Sinusitis And Siddha Therapy - Know How Can It Help!

Sinusitis refers to a condition where the paranasal sinuses become inflamed. These are the cavities producing mucus, necessary for your air cavity to work effectively. Sinusitis can be chronic or acute. Bacteria, fungi, allergies, viruses, or an autoimmune reaction commonly causes the condition. Sometimes, deviated septum, regular smoking, inhalation of air pollutants, growth of nasal polyps, etc. are also responsible for causing sinusitis. When the healthy sinus tissues become blocked or filled with fluid, germs thrive and this, in turn, leads to infection and nasal congestion.

Symptoms Indicating Sinusitis -

The commonly observed symptoms may include the following –

  • Intense headache
  • A runny/stuffy nose
  • Sinus pressure at the back of your eyes and cheeks
  • Reduced sensation of smell
  • Foul breath
  • Toothache
  • Discharge of green or yellow mucus, cough
  • Fever
  • Fatigue

Symptoms that last longer than 12 weeks could be an indication of chronic sinusitis.

Siddha Therapy for Sinusitis -

Dealing with persistent nasal congestion and infection may not be easy. Chronic sinusitis requires immediate attention. Siddha therapy is a unique, alternative treatment approach that relies mainly on natural remedies, dietary and lifestyle changes to cure a particular condition – it has been effective in curing sinusitis as well.
The physiological functioning of the body is mediated by three humours, namely Kabam, Pittam and Vatham. The popular belief in the Siddha system is that sinusitis occurs when two out of these three humours – Kabam and Piitam – are deranged.

The major causes mentioned in the literature of Siddha for sinusitis are -

  • Overconsumption of cold beverages
  • Exposure to cold weather
  • Inhalation of allergy-inducing gases or smoke
  • Bathing in cold water soon after being exposed to heat
  • Suppression of tears – a natural urge

The line of treatment focuses on normalizing the balance of the humour, so the disease is cured and your body rests in harmony. To achieve this goal, Siddha prescribes the following home remedies –

  • Mix a few drops of honey with extracts (juice) of tulsi and drink it every morning – this will help open your nasal passage.
  • Take some ajwain and seeds of black cumin in a cloth, and inhale its fragrance – this helps ease nasal blockage and sinusitis
  • Steam inhalation by adding tulsi leaves in a pot of boiled water is an effective method of decongesting the nasal passage and allowing easy drainage of mucus from the sinuses.
  • Bathe in medicated oils infused in lukewarm water at regular intervals.

Decongestants and antihistamines may offer partial relief from the symptoms of sinusitis. However, popping pills every now and then can adversely affect your health. Siddha therapy is a safe and effective treatment procedure. Try these remedies at home for long-lasting outcome.

Therapies For Stress And Anxiety - Know More!

Stress and anxiety are often repeated terms that people use frequently when they are faced with an overwhelming situation. Yet, these are also clinical terms that can refer to hormonal imbalances which can cause despair, panic, hopelessness, depression and other such emotionally and mentally debilitating problems. Apart from the conventional methods of drugs for symptomatic treatment and counselling or therapy, one can make use of several alternative treatment methods to bring down the stress and anxiety levels significantly.

Here are the top four ways of treating the same:

1. Meditation

Transcendental and other forms of guided and unguided meditation can go a long way in realigning yourself with your inner resources so as to create a more congenial environment as you go about doing your daily activities. With meditation, you can focus on your breath or a certain point or you can choose to listen to guided medication which will take you through a scene and help you relax. Soothing treatments such as these will help you in grounding yourself in a better way for a more fluid progression of your day. One can even practice mindfulness techniques for meditation to get into a frame of mind where you will basically observe rather than get affected by everyday events. You must find yourself a quiet place where you can meditate in a peaceful way.

2. Yoga

Many people consider Yoga and its various postures and poses as the best means for the union of the mind, the body as well as the spirit. So, this is also a good way to keep stress and anxiety away. Ensure that you practice the exercises, poses and various breathing activities on a daily basis for at least half an hour to one hour in order to feel visible effects in your mood.

3. Acupressure

There are a series of specific acupoints in everyone  's body which can be pressed and activated in order to relieve the painful and debilitating symptoms of many conditions, including stress and anxiety. Acupressure is a well known way of dealing with these conditions. This method, with its pointed devices and needles, helps in releasing endorphins and eliminating toxins with reduced muscle pressure and better blood circulation.

4. A Better Routine

One of the best ways of removing stress and anxiety from your life is by taking care of your routine and ensuring that you eat, sleep and exercise at a set time every single day so as to create a more organised environment in your life. Limiting caffeine and removing smoking or excessive alcohol dependence can also improve the condition by leaps and bounds.
If the stress and anxiety does not go away with natural methods, then it is best to see a doctor for supplements and therapy.

Panchkarma Therapies For Weight Loss!

As we get older, it becomes a challenging task to keep your weight under control. Obesity has become a very common factor in adults and as well as youths. Although we tend to ignore the weight gain, it is important to keep your weight under control to avoid diseases. The ancient medication system of India- Ayurveda- helps to lose the stubborn fat in our body. The basic principle of Ayurveda says that there should be a perfect control between the soul and the mind. When we are mindful or full of sense, we are more likely to take control of our weight. The main cause of obesity is unhealthy habits of eating and sleeping, lack of physical exercise, family history, smoking, drinking, and high intake of foods that are rich in calorie and so on.

What is Panchakarma?
Panchakarma is a phenomenon which involves 5 ways to balance the doshas (sins) in your body and rejuvenate it. Breaking down the word, Pancha means five and karma means some kind of treatment or action to be taken. Panchakarma cleans your tissues efficiently while removing all the toxins and takes care of the stress and diseases that are deep-rooted inside your body. It removes all the waste materials throughout your organs like sweat glands, bladder, lung, intestines and stomach. Panchakarma is very important and crucial part of Ayurveda as it helps to get the perfect balance state of body, mind and soul through the process or detoxification and rejuvenation, fulfilling the purpose of Ayurveda. Panchakarma occurs with methods like oil baths, massages and so on. It is a very calm and soothing experience.

Procedure of Panchakarma
There are two procedures that need to be taken care of before Panchakarma therapy.

  • Oleation: It is the process where you apply oil to your body. Applying oils of various ingredients and formulas to your body helps to carry all the medicinal properties throughout your body.
  • Fomentation: Oleation makes the toxins loosen up in your body and fomentation sweats it out. So, it is a cleansing process.

The five types of Panchakarma therapies that can be helpful are:
1. Vamana: This is the vomiting process. After the therapy and medication, you will vomit out all the toxins present in your body.
2. Virechana: This is the excretion process. This clears the toxins in your bowels.
3. Nasya: This clears your head region with light massage and formentation.
4. Basti: It is a unique ayurvedic process which involves administrating substances that are medicated such as milk, ghee, oil or herbal decoction inside your rectum to cleanse the toxins.
5. Raktamoskshana: This clears your bloodstream. It cures the diseases that are caused by impure blood.
