Pilonidal Sinus - Kshar Sutra Therapy Is The Best Cure!

Pilonidal sinus disease results in the small tunnel formation in the skin. It occurs at the cleft on top of the buttocks. Such a sinus gets filled with dirt, hair and debris. It has a tendency of becoming infected and may ooze out pus as a result. Once this happens, the sinus may emit a rotten odor if not treated. People who spend the majority of their time seated are at a greater risk of suffering from pilonidal sinus.

Signs and Symptoms of Pilonidal Sinus
You need to be aware of certain signs and symptoms of such a disorder so that you can begin treatment as soon as the problem occurs. Here are some of them-

  1. Extreme pain while sitting or standing
  2. The reddened sore skin around the area
  3. Swelling of the sinus growth
  4. Pus and blood draining from the cyst, which causes a foul smell
  5. Hair growth from the sinus
  6. The appearance of more than just one hole or sinus on the skin.
  7. In rare cases, a mild fever may also accompany the appearance of the cyst.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Pilonidal Sinus
Conventional forms of treatment for Pilonidal sinus are reliable, but they may cause a few side effects. This is why patients suffering from the condition often consider Ayurveda. The main objective of such treatment is to bring balance between the three doshas, namely, Kapha, Pitta and Vata.

Pilonidal sinus is also referred to as Nadi Vrana in Ayurveda. The best way to treat the condition is through Kshara Sutra Therapy. In this form of the treatment, the threads used are first smeared with beneficial herbs.

This thread is then placed inside the sinus. After 7 days the thread is changed with a new one. This procedure may take anywhere between 4 and 8 weeks. This treatment is not only used to treat the sinus but also helps with the formation of new tissues.

Apart from the medication, patients suffering from such a sinus will need to maintain a proper diet and lifestyle. For instance, ditching oily and greasy foods and incorporating fruits and green vegetables into the daily diet can be immensely helpful against Pilonidal sinus. Apart from the diet, patients should also lead an active life to minimize the risk of the disorder. Walking a couple of kilometers every day will also help you fight complications from the same.

TREATMENT OF CHOICE (AYURVEDA) -
In Ayurveda, a parasurgical treatment known as Ksharsutra therapy is an effective treatment for pilonidal sinus/ cyst. Treatment method includes proper identification of sinus tract wrt. to its depth, direction and branching pattern. This could be achieved via sinogram or skilled probing. Once the sinus tract has been properly identified, a super specialized medicated thread i.e. Graded ksharsutra™ is placed in the tract. The medicine from the medicated thread is gradually released which leads to debridement of the sinus tract which means unhealthy tissue, pus, hairs are expelled out from the tract. The proper and complete debridement of the tract induces healing of the sinus which subsequently heals. The medicine coated thread remains effective for 7-10 days after which it has to be replaced by a new thread.

Usually, in a sinus of approx. 5 cm length, 6-8 sittings of medicated thread replacement are required at a weekly interval. Ksharsutra therapy being a non surgical opd procedure doesn't involve any hospitalization or bed rest and patients can resume their routine work immediately after treatment. Graded ksharsutra™ treatment is the treatment of choice for Pilonidal Sinus as chances of recurrence are seldom seen. The facility of Graded ksharasutra™ is available only at Sushruta Anorectal Institute.

Sinusitis - What Is The Role Of Surgery?

Sinusitis - What Is The Role Of Surgery?

Sinusitis is an inflammatory condition which causes swelling of the tissue lining the sinus passages. The healthy sinisuses are filled with air, but when there is a blockage, they get filled with fluids which can give rise to germs and cause an infection. Conditions such as the common cold, allergic rhinitis (swelling of the lining of the nose) and a deviated septum (shift of the nasal cavity) can cause sinusitis. People with nasal polyps and blocked drainage ducts are more prone to getting sinusitis as compared to other people. The main treatment for sinusitis is surgery.

Sinusitis Surgery
Surgery is the most effective treatment for this condition as it makes the sinuses drain by getting rid of the blockage and draining out the mucus. Surgery also removes infected, swollen and damaged tissues in the sinus along with polyps present in the nose or the sinus. If any foreign substances are obstructing the nasal passage, they are removed as well. Surgery, sometimes, is the only way of getting rid of a nose which is badly blocked. In severe conditions, people might also require a second surgery. Surgery, when coupled with medication, is more effective in treating this condition as antibiotics might be required to prevent the sinus from getting re-infected.

Infections - Try Homeopathy To Treat Them!

Infections - Try Homeopathy To Treat Them!

Infection is generally understood as the invasion into the body tissues of an organism by certain foreign bodies such as bacteria, parasite, and virus. They are transmissible diseases and can be transmitted from one person to the other via sneezingcoughing or physical contact. They can be mild, moderate or severe.

  • They can be acute, that is, can last for a short time, or chronic that lasts for a long time, or a latent infection that may not cause any symptoms at first but reactivates and resurfaces over a period of time.
  • Although each infection has its own distinct symptom. Generally, these symptoms include feverswelling, redness, inflammation, burning, cough, diarrhea, fatigue, muscular painnauseavomiting, rapid pulse or rapid breathing.
  • If the patient has a severe headache, difficulty in breathing, painful swelling and unexplained prolonged fever or cough, he or she should immediately consult a doctor.

Conventional drugs that are given to treat infections like antibiotics, antiviral, antihistamines and steroids have many side effects on the human body. They on one hand hamper the digestive power of the system and on the other hand lower the immunity power of the body. In the long run, these medicines can have adverse effects on the body. Though conventional drugs suppress the disease for some time, the disease tends to resurface in the future.

However, Homeopathy has been found to be of great success in treating both acute and chronic infections. The best part is that, there is no side effect. Homeopathy also boosts our immune system so that the body naturally develops the strength to fight against infections in future, when foreign bodies invade. Homeopathic medicines have also proved to be effective as preventive measures against infections.

Some of the Homeopathic medicines for the treatment of most common infections are discussed below:

  1. Throat infections: Belladonna, Lachesis, Lycopodium, Phytolacca, and Mercurius are most commonly administered to cure throat infections.
  2. Skin infection: Common homeopathic remedies are Sulphur, Calendula, Hypericum, Silica, and Hepar sulfuris.
  3. Bladder infection: Berberis, Chimaphila, Hydrastis, Apis, Cantharis, and sarsaparilla are commonly prescribed.
  4. Stomach infection: Arsenic album, Nux vomica, Carbo veg, Lycopodium, and Pulsatilla are commonly recommended.
  5. Sinus infection: Kali bichromicum, Pulsatilla, Mercurius, Natrum muriaticum, and Allium cepa work well in cases of sinus infections.

Most of the Homeopathy medicines are prescribed on the basis of symptoms observed. So, Homeopathic medicines are prescribed, even before the definitive diagnosis is made. Thus, the time saved prevents the infection from spreading, and the patient is automatically cured rapidly.

Managing Headache & Sinusitis With Ayurveda!

Managing Headache & Sinusitis With Ayurveda!

Ayurveda believes that overall health is the result of the balance between three elements in the body – vaata, pitta, and kapha. Common disease conditions such as headaches, cold and sinus infections can be easily managed by making slight lifestyle changes so that overall health is managed. Ayurveda believes in a holistic approach where a combination of yoga, diet and lifestyle changes are required to bring about the change.

Whatever is the reason for the headache, be it stress, vascular, tension, hunger or sleep induced, it can be treated by a combination of approaches. Ayurveda gives the following recommendations for headaches:

  • Avoid going hungry for prolonged periods
  • Avoid going out in extreme weathers (hot or cold) without adequate protection
  • Eat whole grains, fruits and vegetables; avoid stale food
  • Avoid working for very long hours without a break
  • Sleep in a calm, quiet, and dark room
  • Avoid using digital media at night
  • A paste of sandalwood on the forehead provides relief
  • Grind some pepper and rice to make a paste and apply it on the forehead

Ayurveda believes that a headache is a symptom, not a disease in itself. Therefore, treating the underlying symptoms will provide relief from the headache.

Sinusitis: Sinuses are air-filled spaces in the skull, and due to various reasons, these can become filled with mucus and get inflamed. People with cough and cold get sinusitis. It is also common in people who are exposed to dusty and cold weather. All these lead to irritation of the mucosa and blockage, causing headaches and congestion.

Management: Again, Ayurveda believes that sinusitis is a manifestation of an underlying problem and helps the body get rid of the blockage and the mucus. This is done via the following:
Include a lot of garlic and ginger in the diet

  • Avoid stale, heated foods.
  • Eat freshly cooked foods which are digestible and warm
  • Do not drink cold water, drink it warm; even better if you can, add pepper
  • Get adequate rest, and sleep on one side with a pillow under the head
  • A mixture of turmeric, honey and ginger does wonders for the sinus
  • Avoid oily foods, chocolates, cold drinks and ice creams.

Common cold: As the name itself suggests, this is a very common condition and is brought on by any weather change. Kapha, which balances the respiratory system is the main culprit here. Similar to sinusitis,

  • Drink adequate water (preferably warm)
  • Get adequate rest
  • Include a lot of clove, ginger, garlic, turmeric, and tulsi
  • Eat simple, easy to digest foods, soups, broth, cooked and mashed vegetables
  • Avoid processed and oily foods

Sinus Problems - Have Homeopathy At Your Rescue!

Sinus Problems - Have Homeopathy At Your Rescue!

Sinusitis or sinus infections can be quite a debilitating ailment when it becomes recurrent. Sinuses are cavities within our head just behind the nose which extends up to our forehead and to certain areas of the cheeks. These cavities are filled with a mucosal lining which helps you breathe and also filters the air which goes to the lungs. When the mucosal lining gets inflamed, it blocks the normal drainage of the mucus into the nose. This results in headaches, nasal polyps and general discomfort. Homeopathy offers some great remedies for this condition, without side effects. Some of these are discussed below.

Homeopathic remedies for sinus problems

  1. Belladonna: This medication is very effective when the sinusitis has resulted in a suppressed discharge from the nose which occurs intermittently. If you have a splitting headache which feels unbearable, Belladonna can help relieve the symptoms quickly. If the infection of the sinus has spread to the throat and results in cough, Belladonna can be equally effective in those circumstances as well.
  2. Pulsatilla: If you are experiencing a greenish mucosal discharge from your nose without a painful burning sensation within it, Pulsatilla can be a very effective cure. Another indication where this medication is very effective is when you have headaches centered just above your eyes rather than over the forehead or other parts of your face.
  3. Kali Bichrome: This is another commonly prescribed medication to deal with the symptoms of sinusitis as well as to reduce inflammation and cure sinusitis altogether. If you have a lot of mucosal discharge that drops into your throat along with discharges through the nose, Kali Bichrome is the drug to go to. Other indications where it is effective are pain and heaviness in the nose and the inability to breathe with headaches in and around the eyes.
  4. Silicea: If you are feeling cold and constantly chilly along with nasal stuffiness, Silicea is the medication to go to. Along with discharges, your nose may form hard mucous crusts within it. Trying to manually remove these crusts may also cause bleeding. Silicea will reduce these symptoms and is also effective in reducing a headache which occurs mostly on the left side of your face.
  5. Merc Sol: If you are experiencing a yellowish green discharge from the nose along with a burning sensation and increased saliva secretion in your mouth, Merc Sol is the remedy to turn to. It is also effective wherein the headache has spread all around the head.

Pilonidal Sinus - Graded Ksharsutra Therapy Is Better Than Surgery/Z-Plasty!

Pilonidal refers to a nest of hairs and sinus stands for a tunnel like structure with two openings communicating with each other. A Pilonidal Sinus (PNS) presents as a nodular swelling or an opening in lower spinal region with hairs and dead cells in the sinus cavity. Intermittent watery or pus discharge is also noticed from this swelling.

Symptoms:

Pilonidal sinus mostly happens to people with hairy skin. Hairs invade in the skin in natal cleft and act as a source of infection. As a result cyst formation is there with swelling and intermittent pus discharge. The symptoms Pilonidal Sinus include:

• A painful swelling in lower spinal region

• Pain and swelling subsides once the pus is discharged and again appears when pus formation is there. This cycle goes on.

• Hair protruding out from the lesion may be seen

• One or more sinus openings can also be seen

Pilonidal Sinus Treatment:

Pilonidal Sinus very seldom heals with treatments through medicine; whether it is allopathic, homeopathic or ayurvedic, they tend to show only temporary relief. The problem does not get eradicated completely. Under most of these circumstances, surgeons recommend patients to undergo surgeries like Z-plasty. Even after surgery, there are high incidences of recurrence so it is not a good choice for Pilonidal Sinus treatment.

Other complications like pain, hospitalization and longer process of recovery are also commonly seen. However, Pilonidal Sinus can be completely treated by Graded Ksharsutra Treatment. In this treatment; Graded Ksharsutra - a specialized Medicated thread is placed in sinus cavity which is replaced at weekly intervals till the sinus heals completely.

Here are few reasons why Graded KsharsutraTM is considered to be better than Surgery

• As it is a non-surgical procedure, so hospitalization or bed rest may not be required.

• In Ksharsutra therapy there is no cutting of tissues hence the chance of post operative bleeding are not there whereas after surgery; the chances of post operative bleeding or infection are always there.

• Ksharsutra therapy is done under Local Anesthesia which is always safer than general anesthesia/ Spinal Anesthesia required during surgery.

• Patients can continue his normal routine activities as usual during this treatment which is not the case after surgery for Pilonidal Sinus.

• Delayed healing and Recurrence of Pilonidal Sinus are the complications seen after Pilonidal sinus surgery. Such complications are not seen with Graded KsharsutraTM Treatment.

• Graded KsharsutraTM is more economical and more convenient than surgery.

Hence, it is being concluded that Graded KsharsutraTM Treatment is the best treatment for Pilonidal Sinus.
