There are many different types of insulins, some are for rapid action like Insulin Actarapid, which starts action with in minutes of injection and helps prevent after food glucose rise. I think one should not hide such things from would be partner. You must be having some special positive qualities in your personality.
In type one diabetes insulin production does not stop suddenly it takes sometime. Please follow advice of your doctor and adjust dose of insulin according to blood sugar levels with the help of your doctor.
