Metformin is a safe drug to be used in diabetes because chances of hypoglycemia are very less with it.
Pioz (Pioglitazone) is another drug used to control blood sugar with different mechanism.
Usually second drug is added when blood sugar is not controlled with diet restrictions, regular exercise and single medicine.

Please get an Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT) with 75 g of glucose, on empty stomach and post those results also look at HbA1c%. It is necessary to know these before I cn make any comments. Thanks.

Fasting blood sugar usually lower than pp but in diabetic patient pp blood sugar some times comes low which means either anti diabetic medicines/insulin dose is more or food intake is less.
