What are the best home remedies for indigestion?

Stomach Indigestion is characterized by pain in the stomach and under the ribs. Symptoms of stomach indigestion are stomach bloating, nausea and gas. These are a few remedies for stomach indigestion:

  1. Ginger:

    Ginger is very helpful for stomach indigestion. Eating a few raw pieces of ginger or mixing a piece of ginger with your cup of tea can be greatly beneficial for stomach trouble.

  2. Peppermint:

    Peppermint is helpful in soothing intestinal muscle spasms and relieving nausea. A cup or two of peppermint tea would be greatly helpful in treating stomach indigestion.

  3. Baking Soda:

    Mix a teaspoon full of baking soda in a glass of water. Drinking it would help in neutralizing your stomach if it is too acidic. It also helps relieve painful gas.

  4. Lemon water:

    This is another remedy for stomach upset. It helps in dispelling gas from your stomach.

  5. Beer:

    Half a glass of beer can also be very helpful in clearing up your stomach.

  6. Apple Cider Vinegar:

    Apple cider helps to stimulate the production of acid in the stomach along with digestive enzymes which lead to proper digestion of food and prevent bloating and gas formation. You can take an apple cider vinegar by mixing one tablespoon of it in one glass of water. Take the solution before meals.

  7. Gooseberry:

    Gooseberry which is commonly known as amla possess antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties that helps in promoting the enzymes responsible for digestion and reduces indigestion problem.

  8. Corriendar seeds:

    Coriander seeds which is commonly known as Dhaniya helps in promoting the digestion process and cures indigestion.

  9. Fennel seeds:

    Fennel seeds can be an instant remedy for gas problems. You can directly take some fennel seeds and chew them to get relief from your gastric pain. Another option is to put some fennel seeds in boiled water and drink it after a few minutes.

  10. Chammomile Tea:

    Chamomile tea is a form of herbal tea which prevents indigestion and promotes bowel movement.

Summary: Indigestion can be reduced by taking Chamomile tea, baking soda, fennel seeds, Gooseberry, apple cider vinegar, ginger, beer, baking soda, peppermint.

Are there any side effects of remedies for indigestion?

With effective home remedies for stomach gas, you will get relief or help to get rid of indigestion from it without any uneasy side effects. That is why home remedies are always better and a preferred choice of treatment. But then refrain from those ingredients to which you might be allergic to or those that you sense are not working for you, as every person reacts differently to any remedy.

For example, ginger, though an excellent remedy for flatulence, can cause heartburn or even diarrhoea in some.

The best course of action is to try and find out what works for you and stick to it. There is no harm in trying one after the other as these are regular foodstuffs and would not cause severe issues while carrying out your trial and error process unless you are specifically allergic to any of the ingredients or suffering from any chronic condition.

Sometimes, Baking soda and water are known to react violently in the stomach, causing tearing of tissues. To avoid it, mix a few drops of lime in it. Also, don't exceed half a glass of beer as it might aggravate stomach problems.

Summary: Despite being effective, certain home remedies have some side effects which vary from person to person, so choose your home remedy only if you are not allergic or sensitive to the particular substance. Do not use any home remedies in excess as it may be harmful to health.

What are the post-remedy guidelines?

Some post remedy precautions are:

  • A balanced diet along with home remedies will give relief from gas or bloating and heaviness.
  • Avoid aerated drinks as they take up a lot of empty spaces in the stomach causing gas to form.
  • Avoid too much alcohol.
  • Eat a lot of green vegetables.
  • Regular physical activity and a good night’s rest will help prevent gas. Vegetables such as cabbages, sprouts, turnips are gas-producing elements: avoid them.
  • Drink lots of water throughout the day, and avoid heavy meals at night, and do not lie down immediately after eating.

How long does it take to recover?

Usually it takes a day or two for the remedies to show their effect. It does not take too long to recover from indigestion. If the issue is unattended, then serious problems may arise. Temporary relief can be observed from using natural home remedies for indigestion, but if it continues, then it is better to consult a doctor immediately.

Are the results of the home remedies for indigestion are permanent?

No. Even after you are cured, if you do not follow precautions, chances are you'll have stomach trouble once again. So, it is advisable to follow the precautions for a week or so.
