Home Remedies For Anal Fissure: Procedure, Recovery, Risk & Complication

What is the remedy about?

An open sore or a tear in the skin tissues around the anus is commonly called as an anal fissure. This may cause a sharp pain especially when you have a bowel movement. In other words this is also called as a rectal fissure and people suffering from constipation are at a greater risk of suffering from this problem. Medications can control the problem to an extent but however you can try these home remedies to curb them to an extent.

  1. Olive Oil
Olive oil is a rich natural laxative and can help ease out your bowel moments. They can allow the stool to pass easily and has anti-inflammatory properties. To use them, mix equal quantities of olive oil, honey and beeswax in a bowl. Heat it in a microwave until the beeswax melts completely. Let it cool and apply it on the affected area. Repeat it as necessary.
  2. Aloe Vera
Aloe Vera has pain-relieving properties and can ease the symptoms of anal fissures. They also help in repairing the damaged skin tissues. To use them cut off one leaf of an Aloe Vera plant and slice it and use a spoon to scoop out the gel. Alternatively, you can opt for organic Aloe Vera gel available in the market. Apply this gel on the affected area and relax for some time. Use it repeatedly for better results.
  3. Hot Sitz Bath
Nothing can beat a warm bath to relieve the discomforts caused by anal fissures. It also reduces the pain, swelling and itching in the infected areas. To have one, fill a large bathtub with warm water. Add a few drops of lavender essential oil and mix well. Sit in the tub for about 15 to 20 minutes. You can take such baths two to three times a day.

Are there any side effects?

Rest assured that there will be no side effects when you are using these home remedies. But make sure that the ingredients are of good quality and branded. Always try using unfiltered natural Aloe Vera, as it would be more effective and try going for the roots rather than the gel based products available in the market. When using the olive oil method, make sure that the oil is pure. The sitz bath water should also be clean, so that the problem doesn't intensify. In case of any increased discomfort or rare allergic reaction, get in touch with your doctor.

What are the post-remedy guidelines?

Don't wear tight clothes during such home remedies. Whenever you step out make sure you wear loose fitting clothes to avoid friction with the affected area. Get ample sleep and have plenty of fluids and fibrous fruits and vegetables to avoid constipation. Also, avoid doing strenuous activities and exercises as they can enlarge the fissure and you might feel more pain in the region.

How long does it take to recover?

It can take some time to recover from an anal fissure with these remedies, though you will be able to make out gradual improvement easily. Severe cases can be more painful and might need medical intervention if these home treatments are not working. Even after the symptoms reduce, you can safely follow these home remedies as they are extremely safe for your body. Avoid constipation and have a fibre-rich diet for best results.

Are the results of the remedy permanent?

Depending on the severity of the fissure, these home remedies might have permanent or temporary effects. But often, you will have to follow these treatments for a long time to ensure complete cure. Going in for regular checkups is also a good idea to prevent recurrence. Have fibre-rich foods and lots of water to avoid constipation as well.

These home remedies can be followed by anyone with or without any previous training. However, ensure that the products used are in good condition and you should sanitize your hands before and after the treatment. You should also be aware about the quantities to use beforehand.
