Is My Child Short?

Growth is the most important aspect of childhood, one that distinguishes children from adults. Growth is affected by a number of diseases and growth failure is often the first sign of a serious disease. Unfortunately children with growth failure present very late when no help is possible.

Why to worry?

Growth is the best marker of health and growth failure may be caused by a seious disease. Moreover children with short stature have lower self esteem.

Plot the height of your child in the growth chart and if it is below the lower limit visit a doctor. Alternatively if your child's height is less than the formula (Height = Age in years x 6 + 77 cm) it may be a cause of concern. Growth stops at the age of 14 years in girls and 16 years in boys. Hence the child should be reviewed latest by 10 years for girls and 12 years for boys.

What causes growth failure?

Growth failure can be due to a number of causes including poor nutrition, lack of physical activities and low genetic potential with parents being short. Short stature can also be caused by a number of diseases like thyroid problems, growth hormone deifiency and celiac disease (wheat allergy).

How can I improve my child's growth?

Please encourage your child to play for atleast 1 hour a day. It is important to restrict screen time including television, computer, tablets and mobiles to less than an hour. Increased protein and calcium intake with more milk, pulses and vegetables also helps in improving growth. Growth hormone is produced during sleep. Sleeping for at least eight hours a day is therefore essential for a child to achieve good growth.

What can be done if my child is very short?

Please consut a doctor to identify the cause of short stature. Most conditions are readily treatable. Children with growth hormone deficiency respond dramatically to growth hormone. Growth hormone is also being used now in children with turner syndrome, familial short staure, small size at birth and kidney disease

Discolored Skin - What to Expect?

Discolored Skin - What to Expect?

Injury, lingering infirmity deprives the body of the nutrients which are necessary for healthy skin, inflammatory diseases, several hours of heat and sun exposure or contact with sun can all cause discolored skin. If Melanin (whichever of the diverse black, dark brown, auburn, or yellow color of living things as skin color or hair color and eye color) is produced in abundance due to some physiological imbalances, it can result in that area of the body to get darker than the rest.

On the other hand, if there is a decrease in Melanin production then you could get lighter skin patches known as Vitiligo . While most pigmentation anomaly entails patches of skin, others affect the entire body. Depending on the two different conditions the terms hyper-pigmentation (excessive) and hypo-pigmentation (moderate) have been coined. Most women face problems of hyper-pigmentation during pregnancy and after child birth due to over secretion of hormones. 'Mask of pregnancy' is a new age term given to this condition in pregnant women. Most cases are reversible; some might last an entire lifetime, if medical attention is not available at the right time. Hypo-pigmentation should not be mistaken with Albinism, which is a genetic condition.

Albinism is characterized by almost no secretion of melanin. Staying out for very long hours in the sun may cause sunburns, when the skin turns brown or red according to one’s color, once this condition heals (after most of the burnt or dead skin peels off), the tanned portions may remain. Fungal contamination such as ringworm may set off stained skin patches. A compromised immune system can result in discolored skin as well. A frequent allergy that causes skin to get discolored is eczema. Birthmarks are also a kind of discolored skin.

It is wise for you to visit a dermatologist when you start noticing a sudden change in your skin color for no apparent reason, a patch that does not get relieved by OTC medicines or experience a burning or itching sensation on the skin etc. A dermatologist after evaluating your skin and putting you through a couple of basic questions would recommend ointments and oral medicines. He/she may also ask for blood tests to get done. Treatment would solely depend on the primary cause.

Treatment and prevention

  1. In general, most skin discoloration issues can be dealt with the help of creams containing glycolic acid, hydroquinone, lactic acid and retinoid. These are easily available in the market.
  2. But care must be taken to not expose yourself to the harmful UV rays of the sun. A sunscreen with the correct SPF count is a must before you venture outdoors. Remember that one should not skip the sunscreen even during the winters.
  3. Laser therapy and chemical peels will only be considered once topical treatment fails.
  4. Your diet should include plenty of vegetables and fruits; consume plenty of fluids to flush out toxins. Regular exercising promotes better blood circulation that helps prevent such issues concerning discoloration.

Supplements of Vitamins A, C and E are also prescribed in combination with Vitamin B to improve the overall skin condition. Simple home remedies including lime juice, milk, curd and honey applied on the affected spots with homemade scrubs can help remedy the issue. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a dermatologist.

Vaginal Rashes - What Do They Indicate?

What is a vaginal rash?

Although vaginal rashes can be identified with non infectious conditions, for example, hypersensitive responses and contact dermatitis, many are because of sexually transmitted diseases. The zone around the vagina might be blushed with sores or blisters or it might hold its typical shading yet have bumps. Different side effects, for example, discharge, burning sensation during urination, pain or tingling, may likewise happen.

Not all sexually transmitted diseases cause vaginal rashes; the ones that most regularly do are syphilis, genital herpes and human papillomavirus (HPV). Genital herpes normally causes groups of excruciating red blisters that might be irritated. Syphilis might be connected with a lone, painless, red sore on the vulva that might be followed by a rash on the hands and feet. Genital warts may develop as an after effect of HPV disease.

What is it caused by?

It can happen as a result of rubbing against the skin, like from uncomfortable underwear or rough sanitary napkins. These are not harmful and non-contagious. Also, these are usually minor and get cured with home remedies.

  1. Contact Dermatitis: This can be caused when you come in contact with a substance that can cause irritation or an allergy. This is called contact dermatitis. It can be very itchy, but it is not serious very often.

  2. Pubic lice: These are caused by tiny parasites, such as insects that survive by sucking on blood from humans.

  3. Candidiasis (yeast infections): This can cause rashes in the moist folds of the vaginal skin.

  4. Scabies: It is a skin condition, which can get very itchy and is caused due to little mites digging into your skin.

  5. Psoriasis: These are characterised by little red or wine red coloured bumps with silvery scaly skin on top of that. It is commonly found on the knees, elbow or scalp, but it can occur on any part of the body. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a dermatologist.

The following precautions may help prevent or soothe the recurring skin reactions of chronic hives: wear loose, light clothing. Avoid scratching or using harsh soaps. Cool the affected area with a shower, fan, cool cloth or soothing lotion. Keep a diary of when and where hives occur, what you were doing, what you were eating, and so on. This may help you and your doctor identify triggers. Avoid known triggers, such as certain foods or additives, alcohol, pain relievers, heat, cold, exertion, and stress.

Allergic Rhinitis
Hi, I am Dr Pradnya Mulay. I have 13 years of experience in classical homoeopathy. Today I am going to talk about Allergic Rhinitis.

Allergic Rhinitis is also known as Hay fever. It occurs when your immune system over reacts with the particles of air, and you are allergic to them. You get sneezing, runny nose as your reaction to the immune system. Those particles which set an allergic reaction in the body are called as allegiance. Patients with allergic Rhinitis get symptoms for many years, often in years or certain times in a year. Sinusitis and ear infections most of the times accompany with Allergic Rhinitis.

Symptoms- You get sneezing, runny nose; your nose, throat and ear becomes itchy; you loose sense of smell; your eyes and nose becomes watery and itchy; unable to breathe properly through nose, discharges are usually clear and thin but they may become cloudy and yellowish if there is associated sinus and nasal infection.

The main causes of Allergic Rhinitis are pollens from trees, grass, animal dandruff, cockroach. At work place, we find wood dust, cereal dust, chemicals, lab animals, strong odour, smoke etc.

If it happens because of pollens it attacks you certain time in a year.

If it happens because of dust which is indoor, it may attack you all the time.

If you consult a doctor, he will examine you completely, he will ask, what are the symptoms? when do you get them? what are the factors which aggravate them? what are the factors which make them worst? to know the probable cause. Depending on the severity, the doctor may ask for skin test in which the small amount allegiance is put on the skin to see the reaction. what we can do is, we must take precautions, like,

To stay indoors when the pollen amount is high outside.
Clean your house often to get rid of dust and cockroaches.
Homeopathy has great remedies for Allergic Arthritis. It treats the problem from the root, that is, the hyper activity of immune system. It repairs immune system, thereby controls hyper activity. The body reacts normally to the same thing which previously was allergic. We advise you to take homoeopathic medicines for Allergic Rhinitis.

To know more about Allergic Rhinitis, you can contact me through Lybrate or can also visit my clinic.

Thank you.

Natural Ways to Ease Allergies
I m Dr Chhavi Bansal and I m practising at the Homeosure home of Homeopathy and Wellness, Pitampura, Delhi. I will be speaking about allergies today.

Allergies are a group of conditions which are characterized by hypersensitivity of the immune system to something in the environment that causes little or no problems in most of the individuals. So from this only we get the causes of allergy. Allergy is basically caused by a combination of host and environmental factors. Host factors, being genetic redispositions, hereditary, age, sex and racial factors. There are a very good number of allergies which are common in certain races and environmental factors being environmental pollution, the prevalence of allergens in the environment, our dietary habits and the childhood exposure to certain allergens.

Almost daily I see around eight to ten patients of respiratory allergies and I don t advise them a prolonged treatment. Usually, a treatment of 3 to 6 months suffice in case of any kind of allergies be it respiratory allergies, skin allergies, food allergies or gastric allergies but the treatment may extend up to 1 year in certain conditions.

If you have any query related to respiratory allergies or any kind of allergies feel free to consult me at lybrate . You can text me your problems or you can have a audio consultation or video consultation. You can also book an appointment through lybrate.com.
