Home Remedies For Acidity: Procedure, Recovery, Risk & Complication

What is the remedy about?

There is a ring of muscles called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), which normally closes the stomach after you eat food. When you suffer from acidity, this ring of muscles loosen and stays open, allowing the stomach acids to go up the esophagus to your throat. This acid reflux causes symptoms such as a burning sensation in the chest, you start burping and might experience heartburn. The risk for developing acidity increases due to obesity, overeating, eating just before sleeping, pregnancy and consuming food that has high acid content.

There are many treatments for acidity. Here are some home remedies that treat it efficiently:

  • Baking soda: Baking soda neutralizes the effects of stomach acid, in an acidity attack. Take a teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water and drink once a day. The PH levels of sodium bicarbonate help to ease heartburn and the burning sensation of acidity.
  • Spiced buttermilk: Another effective remedy for acidity is spiced buttermilk. Crush fenugreek seeds, black pepper and coriander leaves in a powdered form. Add the mixture to a glass of buttermilk and drink twice a day. If you prefer, you can just have the buttermilk plain. Since buttermilk contains lactic acid, it neutralizes the effects of the stomach acids, thus, providing relief from acidity.
  • Cinnamon tea: Cinnamon is a natural antacid, which aids in the process of digestion. To make this remedy, boil a cup of water and add half a teaspoon of cinnamon powder to it. Turn off the heat and allow it to rest for five minutes. Drink this cinnamon tea twice in a day, until the acidity subsides.

Are there any side effects?

Usually, home remedies for acidity do not cause many side effects. However, consuming baking soda on a regular basis can lead to side effects such as nausea and swelling. It is advisable for pregnant women and women who are breastfeeding to avoid consuming cinnamon. Those people who are on medication for conditions such as diabetes, heart problems, and blood thinners, should avoid consuming cinnamon in excess. Since excess cinnamon might react negatively with these medicines. In a few cases, people who are allergic to milk or are lactose intolerant can have an allergic reaction to buttermilk.

What are the post-remedy guidelines?

The post remedy guidelines for those who suffer from acidity are as follows:

  • It is important to sleep only one to two hours after you have eaten food. It is advisable to eat six smaller meals during the day, rather than eating three heavy meals.
  • You should drink plenty of water and exercise regularly.
  • Those who suffer from acidity must avoid spicy food, tomatoes, caffeine, alcohol, fatty foods and smoking.

How long does it take to recover?

These home remedies can take one to three days to work effectively. Within a week, you should experience relief from heartburn and the acidic burping. If you do not recover from acidity within a week or so, it is advisable to seek expert medical help, immediately.

Are the results of the remedy permanent?

These home remedies work efficiently in treating the condition of acidity. While the remedies treat the symptoms, bad lifestyle habits and diet can cause acidity to recur. Thus, the treatment can never fully be permanent.

Is there any training or experts required?
