Bloating isn't a medical condition. It doesn't necessarily mean that a person has eaten too much. It can be a case of eating wrong food which has not been digested by the body. Bloating occurs when air and water get trapped inside the stomach or intestine. As a result, the stomach gets swollen well past its normal level.

Culprits of bloating:Bloating can result from a number of cases. Fatty or junk foods are one of the biggest culprits of bloating. It hinders the digestion process and doesn't let the stomach empty on time. Carbohydrates too can cause bloating. Even carbonated drinks can play spoilsport. It creates bubbles in the stomach leading to indigestion and bloating. Some food items related to gas include cauliflower, lettuce, hard candy, beans, Brussels sprouts, broccoli etc. Apart from this, consumption of excessive junk food and soft drinks can lead to bloating.

Steps to avoid bloating: The best way to avoid bloating is to refrain from bloat causing foods as mentioned earlier. If you wear dentures, it should be ensured that it fits properly. There are instances when excess air gets inside the stomach due to an improper fixture of denture leading to bloating. Eating or drinking slowly is another good way of staying away from bloating. When you eat slowly, there are fewer chances of extra air getting inside the stomach. In the case of beverage consumption, avoiding the straw is a good idea. This way the unwanted air cannot make their way inside the tummy and play foul.

Taking a small walk after every meal is another good way of staying away from bloating. This way the gas inside the tummy cannot rise above the surface. The practice of calming technique such as yoga, deep breathing and meditation also goes a long way in giving relief from bloating.

Some home remedies to get rid of bloating include:

  • A cup of ginger, lemon and honey in a cup of hot water once everyday
  • 1 cup of herbal peppermint tea freshly prepared in boiled water
  • In the case of regular stomach bloating, intake of one caraway seed on a daily basis fetches immediate results
  • Consumption of a cup of baked pumpkin twice a week
  • Consumption of warm lemon water before you start your day is another good way of keeping bloating at bay.

Bloating can also be a symptom of other intestinal related problems as well. Ear Discharge - Can It Be Managed At Home?

Ear discharge may occur due to several reasons. Injury or trauma to the ear canal, a ruptured ear drum or an infection in the middle ear may be the most common causes of ear discharge. Eczema, swimmer’s ear and other skin irritations may also lead to this problem. While there are some simple home remedies to treat this disorder, always consult an ENT specialist if the discharge does not stop after the application of those treatments.

Let us look at some common ways to treat this disorder.

  1. Use gravity: While this method does not treat ear discharge per se, it does help in draining the fluid build-up in the ear. Just lie down on your side keeping the affected ear parallel to the ground. Use your finger to create a vacuum inside your ear and drain the fluid inside it. The finger must be clean. You can also use a cotton wad for this purpose. Another way could be by simply lying on your side with a towel under your ear.
  2. Use a warm compress: This treatment promotes the flow of ear discharge to its outer part, thereby alleviating the pain. Dip a clean piece of cloth in warm water, wring the cloth as much as you can and then place it around your ear for 2-5 minutes. Lie down on your side.
  3. Inhale steam: Inhaling steam, opens up the Eustachian tube, thereby promoting the flow of the trapped ear discharge. Simply mix a little bit of eucalyptus oil with some water, boil the mixture and inhale the steam. Tilt your head to one side so that the fluid drains out. Do this exercise for 5-10 minutes. Cover your head and the water with a towel to prevent the steam from escaping. Repeat this exercise as needed.
  4. Use vinegar and rubbing alcohol mixture: Vinegar and rubbing alcohol have excellent anti-microbial properties. Mix equal parts of white vinegar and rubbing alcohol. Put some drops of the mixture in a dropper. Lie down on your side with the infected ear upwards. Insert some drops of the solution with the dropper in your ear. Wait for 10 minutes and then drain out the ear discharge by tilting the infected ear to the other side. Repeat this exercise twice a day for better results.
  5. Use garlic oil: Crush 2-3 garlic cloves and extract its oil. Use a dropper to put 2-3 drops of this extract into your affected ear. Tilt the head to one side so that the juice settles down. Now hold a dryer next to the infected ear and let the warm air blow inside it. Repeat this exercise twice a day for better results.

Bones make up the skeletal framework of the body. They are a type of connective tissues and are made up of calcium. Their main function is to provide support and to protect our internal organs. When a bone in our body breaks, it is said to be a fracture.

Fracture occurs when an external force is exerted on a part of the body making the bones break. This breakage can be caused by reasons ranging from traumatic to medical. Traumatic causes include accidents, falls, and injuries, whereas medical conditions include osteoporosis and cancer of different types.

There are various types of fractures that affect individuals. The main types are closed and compound fractures. In a closed fracture, the broken bone does not pierce through the skin. In a compound fracture, the bone is broken down into pieces, thereby resulting in internal bleeding and infection. However, the most common type of fracture in children is the greenstick fracture. It is defined as a small and slender crack affecting children because their bones are more flexible and soft compared to that of adults.

When it comes to fractures in children, parents are advised to follow certain first aid measures to ensure faster healing and repairing. 

  1. Immobilisation- The most important step in first aid for fracture is immobilizing the fractured portion. Do not move your child from his or her place unless there is a paramedic.
  2. Stop the bleeding- If the fracture has pierced the skin and has resulted in heavy bleeding, then you should put pressure on the wound with a sterile cloth. This should stop the bleeding.
  3. Put ice packs- If your child is in pain, put ice packs on the injured area. However, wrap the ice in cloth first and then put the pack on the wound to prevent swelling and to reduce pain.
  4. Provide support- If the fracture has taken place in the child's limb, provide support to him/her by placing a pillow under the leg. Try to comfort your child and do not panic in front of him/her.
  5. Use a splint- It is important to splint the injured area and know the basic steps involved in making a splint. For a splint, you can use a wooden scale or a folded magazine. Place the splints above and below the fractured area. Use gauze or tape to keep the splints in place. Do not put the tape or gauze directly over the fractured region. It is important to note that you do not move or realign the broken bone, causing further pain to your children.

After providing proper first aid care to your child, you should immediately call for an ambulance and take him or her to a doctor. Piles or hemorrhoids can be a debilitating disorder of the rectum and anus where passing stool becomes painful. It is the swelling of the veins in the anus and the rectum, which may then be bruised by hard stool passing through it or due to excessive pressure being put on it. This can be a very painful and embarrassing condition for many people to go through.

Remedies for piles at home

There are many remedies that you can try at home to reduce the pain and swelling and even reduce the hemorrhoids themselves over time. Let's look at a few of the options.

  • Radish for treatment - In this treatment, a radish should be crushed and mixed with appropriate amounts of milk to form a thick paste, which is to be applied on the anus twice daily, and washed off after 15 minutes. This should relieve the symptoms in a few days.
  • Cumin seeds paste - You can take a tablespoon of cumin seed powder, make it into a paste after adding water and then put it on the affected area. After leaving it for 15 minutes or so, it should be washed away with water. Repeating this twice daily will help with the symptoms and reduce pain.
  • Diet Lack of a balanced diet can be problematic for those with piles, and thus, it is recommended that enough roughage such as green leafy vegetables and fruits are included in the diet as well.
  • Figs - Dried figs are also another great weapon against piles. Soaking some dried figs in warm water overnight and then having them in the morning is known to be good for smooth bowel movements, thus, relieving pressure on the rectal veins.

Some of the specific ayurvedic medication that are known to be helpful in treating piles are:

  • Hareetaki - This is the fruit peel of Harad and if taken with 1 cupful of jaggery, it can reduce the symptoms of constipation as reported by many patients.
  • Castor oil -  Mixing a small teaspoon of castor oil with a glass of milk can also help soften the stool and reduce the stress on the rectal walls.
  • Nagakesara - This is also an ayurvedic medicine, which is usually prescribed as oral medication three times daily and has proven its effectiveness many times over.
  • Abhayarishta - 30 ml of this ayurvedic herb is also given to patients after food with equal parts water and has been known to be very effective.

Piles, originally are dilated vessels inside the anus. They usually do not cause pain, but mainly bleed. Other than 1st degree, other piles may be felt outside while straining at stool. Sometimes they need to be put inside with finger. Other than bleeding, there may be itching, discharge or burning. Only first degree piles need to be managed at home by fibre diet, plenty of fluids, mild exercise & avoid straing, avoid jeans type clothes & avoid sedentary life. Rest higher degrees need to managed by an expert proctologist or surgeon. Female/ladies who develop piles during pregnancy, may need to wait upto 3 months post delivery, as these may subside in usual cases. Otherwise need some treatment after that.

Many women experience a temporary encounter with hemorrhoids when they are pregnant. Quite surprisingly, most people tend to experience this in their daily lives. By the age 50, a majority of people have encountered one or more symptoms of this ailment, including rectal pain, bleeding, itching and maybe prolapse where the hemorrhoids protrude out of the anal canal. Though this ailment can be rarely detrimental, it can be a painful intrusion. But thankfully, there are a lot of things we can do about them.


How may this be diagnosed?
Hemorrhoids are usually diagnosed from a plain medical history and health exam. External hemorrhoids, more commonly known as piles, are normally apparent, particularly if a blood clot is formed.   2. Take a sitz bath: A sitz bath is a lukewarm water bath for the lower back portion of the body, which can help in relieving irritation, itching as well as spasms occurring in the sphincter muscle. You can either get small plastic tubs for a sitz bath or sit in a normal bathtub. Most physicians suggest a half an hour sitz bath after every bowel movement. Then tenderly dry the area and avoid wiping it hard.

  1. Ginger tea: A cup of freshly prepared hot ginger tea will instantly show results for a chronic cold.   3. Syrup of honey and onion: If the chronic cold is accompanied with a nasty cough and with yellow sputum, a combination of honey and onion juice can be a wonder agent. The anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties of this mix help to loosen the phlegm from the chest. It also reduces the swelling of the throat and can keep the fatigue down.

  4. Cough syrup: This syrup is not the ones that are available over the counter. It is prepared from liquorice root, ginger, marshmallow root and cinnamon. This syrup will readily arrest sore throats, soothe the mucous membrane and clear the phlegm from inside. For some test improvement, one spoon of honey can be added to make the syrup drinkable. 2 tablespoons of this syrup should be consumed twice in a day before any meal.

  5. Salt bath: A salt bath comprising of scented salt, hot water, lavender oil, eucalyptus oil and peppermint oil can ease the body from tiredness and congestion. It is a welcome relief from the nasty cold. A bath of 15 minutes can relax the body and reduces body pain if any.

  6. Gargle: The old fashioned gargle is one of the best remedies for getting over from chronic cold and cough. Warm water along with salt, cider vinegar, and dried sage is necessary to make the solution. Gargle helps to clear the mucus, fixes voice and gives relief from chest uneasiness.
