FUE Over FUT For Hair Transplant - Know Why!

In the past few years, the number of people who are looking to undergo hair transplants has increased significantly. This rise has been attributed to a rise in hair loss across age groups. In fact, hair loss was earlier thought to start only from one’s middle age, but now over 40% men and 50% women below the age of 35 are victims of hair loss. Not just that, this number increases to 65% for men above 65 years of age.

This is one of the factors why people are looking for solutions like hair transplants. Hair transplant is of two types –

  • Follicular Unit Excision (FUE)

  • Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT)

Let us look at both these methods –

1. FUE -

This method involves extracting hair follicles from areas of the scalp that has a higher density of hair. Once the follicles are extracted, they are then inserted into the areas where hair density is low. This is a new procedure relatively and has seen a rise in popularity in the recent past.

2. FUT -

This is a more traditional method. It involves removing strips of hair from the back of the scalp and then placing them in circular incisions in areas of the scalp affected by hair loss.

Which one is better?

Because hair transplant is cosmetic surgery, there will be some amount of scarring involved. In this regard, FUE has better because there is little tissue scarring. In FUT however, because linear strips of hair are removed and placed in the front of the scalp, there will be big scars. Now if you cut your hair short, these scars will be visible.

FUT is more painful, and requires the restriction of the neck for some days, whereas in FUE nothing such happens so it is considered to be the painless and better method.

The next point is the recovery time. Since FUE involves individual follicle extraction, the recovery period is short. In FUT, patches of the scalp are removed so the scalp tissues experience more trauma. Due to this, the recovery period is FUT is longer.

In FUE, the doctor can also use body hair and transplant it in the scalp. Hair from the beard or the chest area can be used for this purpose. This is not possible in the FUT procedure.

Overall, the FUE procedure has more benefits compared to the FUT procedure. But you should consult a doctor to determine which is suitable for you.

Please note FUE should be done by a plastic surgeon to achieve good results and not by technicians.

Hair Transplant - Who Are Eligible For It?

Hair loss due to androgenetic alopecia or pattern baldness is a condition that affects both men and women. Surgical hair transplantation is the only solution for restoring the lost hair in pattern baldness when medical hair restoration does not offer you a good hair re-growth.

If you have well-defined and clearly established areas or patterns of baldness on the crown with healthy dense coverage of hair at the sides and the back of the head, you are probably suitable for a hair transplant surgery. Hair that is transplanted in the frontal region of the skull generally offers the best results. However, a hair transplant procedure can also be carried out on any other area of your head if you have some bald patch there.

It is best to have detailed information about the hair transplant procedure before you make plans to undergo surgery. It is only after you have read through all the information that you can understand and appreciate the significance of surgical hair restoration. The information will also help you decide whether you are the right candidate for hair transplant surgery. Receiving a hair transplant can improve your appearance and self-confidence.

Good candidates for a hair transplant include:

  1. men with male-pattern baldness

  2. women with thinning hair

  3. anyone who has lost some hair from a burn or scalp injury

Hair replacement isn’t a good option for:

  1. women with a wide-spread pattern of hair loss throughout the scalp

  2. people who don’t have enough “donor” hair sites from which to remove hair for transplant

  3. people who form keloid scars (thick, fibrous scars) after injury or surgery

  4. people whose hair loss is due to medication like chemotherapy

The Two Types of Procedures-

It's worth noting that there are new surgical techniques involved in hair transplants:

  1. FUE - Follicular Unit Extraction: The hairs are individually extracted from the back of the head and re-planted across the area. This is a lengthy, painstaking process but the result is minimal scarring and a very natural-looking hairline.
  2. FUT - Follicular Unit Transplantation: This technique involves taking a larger area or 'strip' of hair from the back of the head, dividing it into smaller units and then re-planting those units in the desired area of hair loss. Scarring can be slightly more conspicuous at the back of the head as a larger area has been removed but an expert surgeon will minimise incision marks to ensure rapid healing.

Hair transplants do, of course, utilise your own natural hair and re-growth can be expected within 4 weeks of surgery. Great care must be taken during your recovery period to protect the newly-transplanted hair. However, once it is deemed safe to resume normal activities, the results can be life-transforming. A successful hair transplant is permanent and can restore confidence and self-esteem.

Hair Transplant Session - What Should You Expect?

Immediately after hair transplantation, you need to exercise little extra care to derive the best benefits. This includes immediate postoperative care, some common with most other surgeries and some very specific to hair transplantation.

The following things will happen immediately after transplant, throughout the first week:

  • Immediately after surgery, like any other surgery requiring anesthesia, there will be slight drowsiness and so it is advisable to arrange for a drive.
  • Expect some mild swelling and soreness that can be managed with rest and anti-inflammatories.
  • There will also be a tight and itchy feeling in areas where transplant has been done.
  • Spray water or saline every half an hour to keep the scalp moist in both the recipient and the donor sites. This promotes healing and also reduces the itchy feeling in these sites.
  • Thermal shock would be applied to areas to damage the existing follicles and new stem cells would be transplanted. This can also produce a warm feeling, sometimes referred to as 'thermal shock'.
  • In some people, there could be scab formation which occurs due to fall of the topmost transplanted hair follicles.
  • If you have undergone a micrograft, then you will have a compression bandage around your head. This should be in place for a day and will cause a tight feeling.
  • Sleep with your head elevated with a couple of pillows.
  • The first day after surgery, hair needs to be washed under the supervision of a physician or a nurse. Use a shampoo, which contains tea tree oil.
  • It is recommended to shampoo your hair regularly from day 2, as it is required to remove the dirt, blood, and oil that often accumulates at the recipient's site. This also helps to controlling infection, which is common post surgery.
  • Wait for at least 14 days before you resume coloring your hair, use of hair sprays, gels, and other hair care products.
  • All transplant surgeries require stitches. If the suture material is absorbable, there is no need to follow-up for removal. If it is not of absorbable material, they need to be removed after 2 weeks' time.
  • Please do not get into a regular exercise routine for up to 6 weeks. Cycling, gymming, swimming, golfing, etc., are to be avoided until the scalp is completely dry and to avoid stretching of the scar.

Everyone's body is unique and responds differently to hair transplantation. Go for periodic review with your doctor to understand how your body is responding.

Considering A Hair Transplant? - Certain Things To Know!

Considering A Hair Transplant? - Certain Things To Know!

Everyone has heard of or even seen hair transplant horror stories, maybe in a magazine, online or even worse seen the obvious 'plugs' in an elderly friend or relative. However hair transplant surgery has jumped leaps and bound in recent years to make it a viable, safe and not too risky option for those suffering from male pattern baldness, many celebrities such as Nicholas Cage, Brendan Fraser Mather MOcanhey, Dwayne Johnson ('the Rock', WWE) Salman Khan (Bollywood) and even Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi are believed to have had hair transplantation surgery, although such is the stigma attached that none of them has admitted to it publicly, it only becomes obvious when studying before and after pictures.

History of Hair Transplant

The origins of hair transplant surgery stem from Japanese dermatologist, Dr Okuda, who in 1939 published a revolutionary method in a Japanese medical journal of using small grafts that were similar to the way hair transplantation is performed today. This method involved using hair transplant grafts to correct lost hair from various body areas, including the scalp, eyebrow, and moustache areas.

In the late 50's one physician, in particular, Dr Norman Orentreich began to experiment with the idea of relocating or transplanting the hair on the back and sides of the head to the balding areas. Dr Orentreich's experiments showed that when bald resistant hairs from the back and sides of the head were relocated, they maintained their bald resistant genetic characteristic regardless of where they were transplanted.

This principle is known as "Donor Dominance", which highlights that hair could be transplanted from the bald resistant donor areas to the balding areas and continue to grow for a life time. This laid the foundation for modern hair transplantation. During the '60s and '70s hair transplants grew in popularity. However, the standard of care involved the use of larger grafts that were removed by round punches and often contained many hairs.

In the '80s hair restoration surgery evolved dramatically, as the large punch grafts were gradually replaced with a more refined combination of mini and micro-grafts. This "combination mini micro-grafting" hair transplantation procedure no longer used the punch to extract the bald resistant grafts. Rather a strip of bald resistant hair was surgically removed from the back of the head and then trimmed into mini and micro-grafts.

Types of Hair Transplant

There are two main types of hair transplant surgery. These mainly include-

1. Follicular Unit Transplant, which is commonly known as FUT or 'strip surgery'

2.  Follicular unit extraction, commonly known as FUE.

The main difference is the method of extracting the transplanted hair. FUT and FUE are really complimentary forms of HT, not competing methods of which one must make a choice.

FUT versus FUE

The '90s saw the gradual introduction of a very refined surgical procedure now known as "follicular unit hair transplantation" or "FUT". This exacting and labour intensive procedure transplants hairs in their naturally occurring one, two, three, and four hair "follicular unit groupings" in which they grow naturally.

The concept of creating the entire hair restoration using exclusively follicular units was proposed by Dr Robert Bernstein and was described in the 1995 Bernstein and Rassman publication "Follicular Transplantation". Critical to the success of the follicular unit hair transplant procedure was the introduction of the binocular microscope by Dr Bobby Limmer of San Antonio Texas in the late 1980s.

Dr Limmer found that by using the microscope to examine the donor tissue he and his staff were able to successfully isolate and trim the naturally occurring follicular units into individual grafts. Dr Limmer shared his techniques and findings with his colleagues and together with Drs. Bernstein, Rassman and Seager, was a persuasive advocate for the follicular unit hair.

The process involving follicular hair transplants is considered to be the most effective among hair restoration methods. In a follicular hair transplant, the surgeon transplants hair from the permanent zone in the back of the scalp onto the affected areas.

If you need a large area covered, then you most likely want to go for FUT because it is the more economical in terms of the number of grafts for the price paid. If you absolutely, positively don't want strip surgery as you are worried about scarring, then FUE is your only alternative. Contrary to popular belief, both methods leave scars. FUT will leave a narrow line across the back of your head, whereas FUE will leave little unpigmented dots across the back of your head. The only difference is that the FUE scars are not concentrated together and therefore harder to detect when wearing hair very short.

There is no doubt that FUE procedures are harsher on the grafts than FUT procedures. Because of this, the final growth yields tend to be lower for FUE compared to FUT. But BOTH procedures work for the most part.

Hair Transplant Cost

FUT surgeries are performed by reputable surgeons around the world however FUE is mostly available through a number of specialists, the vast majority of reputable ones that I know of are in the United States and Canada. Pricing for FUE from these reputable surgeons is currently close to $7- $11 US dollars per graft for FUE, and depending on what level on the Norwood Scale, a scale used to measure the progression of male pattern baldness, can be quite costly. Pricing for FUT from these same surgeons is normally in the range of $4-6 per graft, however, in Asia and Eastern Europe prices can be even lower.

Does cheaper means better?

Many of my clients do sometimes look to cut costs by using other surgeons especially in countries such as India, Pakistan, Thailand and Eastern Europe. Although I'm sure there have been success stories via this route please remember in these countries there is little guarantee or action available to you if something does go wrong. I have seen hair transplant using the FUT method, although not a horror story in terms of scarring or suffering, it did not yield the expected results of a more established surgeon placing the same number of grafts (2,000). He is therefore left with poor hair coverage but now has lost the option to 'shave it all off' due to huge smiley-faced scar in the back of his head!

Check, Check and Check

It is recommended that you should consider the hair transplant surgery option only after having tried the non-surgical treatments on the market. Then when you certain you wish to get a hair transplant I would advice thoroughly researching reputable doctors, of course, price is always an issue, but in the case of hair transplants, it should not be the most important factor. Indeed the money saved is nothing compared to the trauma of having to live with a badly scarred scalp for the rest of your life. If you decide to go for more budget surgeon, please do insist on seeing photos of the surgeon’s previous work and do not be afraid to ask for contact details of their previous patients.

Hair Transplant - Know Advantages Of It!

Hair transplant is regarded as one of the most common cosmetic procedures, mostly undergone by male patients. Hair transplant could come to great help for all those, who are facing the problem of alopecia or hair loss and cannot afford to bear the cost of hair restoration surgery.

Procedure

Hair Transplant is kind of surgery that helps to move hair, which people already have, to fill up areas having very less or no hair.

The procedure is carried out in the following manner:

  • The surgeon first cleans up one’s scalp and injects medicine in order to make the back of one’s neck totally numb.
  • Then the doctor would choose either of the two methods for transplant, Follicular Unit Strip Surgery (FUSS) or Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE).
  • Through the method of FUSS, the surgeon goes on to remove at least 6 to 10-inch strip of skin from the back of one’s head. The surgeon puts the part aside and closes the scalp by sewing it. The area gets hidden immediately by the hair that surrounds it.
  • Next thing involves, the surgeon’s team dividing the strip that got removed from the scalp, into 500 to 2000 small grafts, with each containing a hair or few hairs.
  • After the grafts are prepared, the surgeon cleans up and then goes on to make the area numb where the hair would go in. Subsequently, holes are created and each graft is placed in one of the holes.
  • Depending upon the exact size of the transplant that an individual gets, the process usually takes around 4 to 8 hours.

Benefits of Hair Transplant

There are several benefits which people, who are suffering from hair loss, should consider and hence, go for hair transplant. The benefits include:

  • Hair transplant being a painless, simple procedure, without inflicting any scar on the patient, it is recommended for those suffering hair loss due to several reasons.
  • Looks are important for each and every individual and some people become extremely particular about the way they present themselves. So, hair transplant can help all those people get their looks back, who tend to suffer as a result of hair loss.
  • One of the major benefits is, once the hair follicle gets transplanted, it would continue to grow along with the hair and can be cut, styled in a similar manner, just like a woman would have done with her original hair.
  • Another important benefit is that hair transplant procedure needs minimum maintenance on the part of the patients to take care of the areas that have been worked upon. The reason is that the transplanted hair absolutely works like normal hair, so there is no need for people to use any type of special chemicals or shampoos so as to maintain the exact density.

Advantages Of Hair Transplant Surgery!

Hair transplantation surgery is a procedure where the hair follicles are taken from a donor site (usually the side or back of the head) and implanted on the recipient site that is on the area of baldness. This is a common treatment for men with androgenic alopecia (male pattern baldness) where the hair follicles reduce due to the influence of androgenic hormones. It can also help women with female pattern baldness.

Many people have reservations about the procedure but hair transplantation comes with a number of advantages, such as:

1. Natural growth after surgery

The biggest and most obvious benefit of hair transplantation is that it improves your physical appearance and eliminates the problem of balding completely. This is because the implanted hair follicles continue their natural growth process after they have been transplanted. So, your hair does not look artificial.

Premature bald spots often result in low self-esteem and self-confidence issues which can be effectively addressed by the surgery.

2. Uniform distribution of hair follicles

Hair transplantation with latest techniques gives natural distribution of hair and proper coverage of bald areas

3. Easy procedure and no side effects

The operation is done under local anaesthesia . You will feel no pain throughout the procedure. Very comfortable procedure and you will be awake throughout the procedure. This surgery is done at the level of skin and this is not related to the brain. There is no side effects of this surgery. Today, the surgeons mostly use micro grafts which are placed in such a way that all bald spots are covered with minimal effort.

4. One time procedure

Hair transplantation is the only permanent solution of baldness. No medical treatment for baldness is permanent. Once the hair transplantation has been done, it lasts a lifetime. .Since the grafts are made of your own hair, they continue to grow naturally throughout your lifetime allowing you to cut or style your hair as you wish.

Hair Transplant - Know The Techniques Opted For The Same!

Thinning of hair and bald spots can be caused by a number of factors. Just as you can ‘erase’ wrinkles with cosmetic surgery, today, you can ‘fill’ bald spots with hair transplants. Hair transplants are a type of surgery which transplate hair follicles from one area to another. There are two types of hair transplant surgeryFollicular Unit Strip Surgery (FUSS) and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE).

Follicular Unit Strip Surgery involves the removal of a 6-10” piece of skin from the back of your head. This is because the back of your head is genetically resistant to balding. This is then divided into thousands of tiny grafts each with a few strands of hair on them. For a Follicular Unit Extraction, the doctor will pluck individual hair follicles from the back of your head while you are under anesthesia.

This can be done in a single session or multiple sessions depending on the amount of hair follicles needed and the surgeons’ experience. These are then prepared into grafts. The surgeon will then make holes or slits in the bald spot that is to be filled and carefully place one graft in each slit. Finally the scalp is bandaged. This process can take anywhere between 4-8 hours.

  • Don’t worry, if you begin to see the transplanted hair fall out after 2-3 weeks. This is normal and will be followed by new growth in a few months. You may require a hair growing drug to improve hair growth rate after a hair transplant surgery. You should be able to see dense hair growth within 10-11 months.
  • A hair transplant is not as painless as other forms of cosmetic surgery. Most patients require pain medication for several days after the surgery. Your scalp will feel very tender for the next few days and you may also require anti inflammatory drugs. However, you should be able to get back to work within a week.
  • There are minimal risks associated with this procedure. In some cases, the patient may experience hair fall from the area where the transplant was taken. This is usually temporary and is known as ‘shock loss’. There may also be slight inflammation when the new hair follicles emerge. This can be effectively treated with antibiotics.
  • A hair transplant surgery does not guarantee that your hair will stop falling. Hence, in some cases, you may need to undergo the procedure again to hide bald spots.

Hair Loss - How Hair Transplant Can Help?

Hair transplant surgery is the technique wherein hair is taken out from other parts of your body and grafted on the scalp to treat baldness. Basically, these are such hair follicles that are genetically resistant to balding; therefore, they serve as a permanent treatment for hair loss.

Hair loss in men and women:

  • Male pattern baldness (Androgenic alopecia): Androgenic alopecia is a condition which is characterized by a gradual receding hairline, especially along the temples. This is caused due to the testosterone hormone being converted into Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which causes shrinking of the hair follicles. If you are affected by male pattern baldness, then you may opt for a hair transplant surgery.
  • Female pattern baldness: Females may also be affected by baldness which is characterized by loss of hair from the top of the head and gradual thinning of hair. It may lead to self-esteem issues; so opting for a hair transplant surgery is recommended.

Popular Hair Loss Treatments:

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE): FUE is a hair transplant procedure, in which the hair transplant physicians extract each hair follicle directly from the scalp. It is done randomly and it results in lower density of hair in the donor area which is not noticeable in most cases.

  1. Pain Management: In FUE, stitches are unnecessary and there is no existence of any linear scar, so healing time is short and there is almost non-existent post-procedural discomfort.
  2. Scarring: There is no linear scarring as such in FUE but there are 1mm in diameter or less puncture marks which heal by themselves within 3 to 7 days.

Follicular Unit Transplant - Follicular Unit Transplant or FUT is the procedure of transplanting your hair by removal of a small strip of tissue from the back of your head. Hair follicles are extracted from there for further use. FUT is recommended in cases of advanced hair loss. FUT also recommended as in most cases, your physician will be able to deliver results which meet your expectations.

  1. Pain Management: FUT procedure can cause some pain as swelling may occur in the region from where the tissue has been extracted. Suitable medication can be prescribed by your physician in case the pain persists.
  2. Scarring: Opting for a FUT procedure results in a very thin linear scar in the donor region. The scar is very much concealable as it is visible only if you opt for the shortest haircut styles.

Hair Transplant - Everything You Should Know!

Hair Transplant - Everything You Should Know!

Who doesn't love a head full of thick, lush and healthy hair? It not only enhances our appearance but also makes us look and feel young and spirited. So naturally, losing hair in copious amounts or going bald can be a nightmare for many. But with the hair transplant procedure, you can easily get a head full of hair and regain your confidence.

Hair transplant revolves around the surgical removal of hair follicles from a donor site of a body to a balding patch which is called the recipient site. The process is minimally invasive, and grafts containing hair follicles which are resistant to balding, are transplanted to the bald spot. This method is also used for restoring eyebrows, eyelashes, chest hair, beard hair, pubic hair and for filling in accident or surgical scars.

Here is a closer look at how hair transplant is conducted:

After cleaning your scalp, the surgeon will inject a medicine to make the back of your head numb.

He will then either follow the Follicular Unit Strip Surgery (FUSS) or Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) to implement the transplantation.

FUSS procedure: In FUSS, the surgeon will remove a strip of skin, 6 to 10 inches in length, from the back of your head. He will then sew back that portion of the scalp, and it will be hidden by the hair surrounding it. Next, the removed skin strip will be divided into 500 to 2000 minute grafts, with each containing a single hair or a couple of hairs. The type and number of grafts will be based on your hair quality, type, color and the dimensions of the recipient site.

FUE procedure: In FUE, the surgeon will shave the back of your scalp and remove the follicles one by one. The concerned area will heal with small dots and the surrounding hair will conceal it.

FUE technique is the latest and has least complication rates. It is one of the most widely accepted method of hair transplantation due to less bleeding, no linear scarring, faster recovery and better cosmetic acceptability of donor area.

In both the methods of transplant, after the graft is prepared, the surgeon will clean and numb the area where the hair needs to be transplanted to. He will then create slits or holes with a needle or scalpel and carefully place each graft in each hole. It might take 4 to 8 hours for the entire procedure to be conducted. And if you want thicker hair, more sessions might be required.

Here is a look at the other aspects of hair transplantation:

Recovery: Your scalp maybe tender post surgery and you may require painmedicines for quite some time. Antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs may also be prescribed. You will be able to get back to work in 2 to 5 days after the procedure.

What to expect: Though in 2 to 3 weeks after the surgical process, your transplanted hair will fall off, you will notice new hair growth in a few months. Often, 60-80% hair grow back in 6-8 months.

Risks: Bleeding, infections, scarring and unnatural hair growth are some of the risks associated with hair transplantation. When new hair begins to grow, some people complain of inflammation of the hair follicles, but this can be resolved with medication.

Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy - Know How It Can Help In Dealing With Hair Loss!

Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy - Know How It Can Help In Dealing With Hair Loss!

Hair loss is a prime concern for many men and women these days – whether it is genetic, due to stress, bad haircare or any medical condition. But with advances in the field and adequate research, various new techniques have cropped up in the market which can combat the condition with ease. Platelet-Rich Plasma or PRP, is showing impressive results in reversing hair loss.

PRP is a non-surgical therapeutic hair restoration option. It is suitable for both men and women. It is a state-of-the-art, totally natural, alternative medical procedure used for the treatment of hair loss or hair thinning. It is an injectable treatment which uses the patient’s own blood.

PRP has been in use in the medical field for two decades, and offers some promising potential for stimulating hair growth. However, no definitive studies yet exist that confirms its efficacy.

Advantages of PRP Therapy-

PRP can be helpful in:

  1. slowing the rate of hair loss
  2. regrowing thinning hair to be thicker and full
  3. boosting the health and condition of the scalp
  4. stimulating collagen levels
  5. preparing the scalp for hair transplantation & post hair transplantation

PRP can also assist in the treatment of skin and scalp conditions such as:

  1. dry, itchy and inflamed scalp
  2. genetic hair loss
  3. alopecia areata
  4. telogen effluvium (commonly caused by stress)

 How PRP Works?

The scalp is cleansed and numbing cream applied. While the scalp is prepared, a small amount of blood is drawn from the patient. This blood is then centrifuged to produce the Platelet Rich Plasma. The PRP component is taken from the blood and injected or infused into the scalp or areas of hair loss.  Patients are able to resume normal activities after this procedure.

PRP harnesses the growth factors carried in the blood supply and then delivers a concentrated dose back to the affected scalp and hair follicles. The growth factors in the platelets stimulate the follicles to grow hair. The hair follicles in the resting phase (telogen) may be pushed into growth, and this will appear as new hair growth.

Who is a candidate for PRP?
Men or women who have early stages male or female pattern baldness are suitable candidates for PRP.  It is also suitable for men or women who are currently using hair loss medications; or those who are experiencing or expect to experience post-partum hair loss. It is also suitable for those who have had or plan to have hair transplant surgery

However, you are not a candidate for PRP if you:

  • Have medical conditions such as chronic liver disease, skin diseases or cancer, metabolic and systemic disorders
  • Have undergone anti-coagulation therapy
  • If you have any type of platelet dysfunction syndromes
