Hair Transplant - Are You Eligible?

Hair loss due to androgenetic alopecia or pattern baldness is a condition that affects both men and women equally. Surgical hair transplantation is the only solution for restoring the lost hair in pattern baldness when medical hair restoration does not offer you a good hair re-growth.

If you have well-defined and clearly established areas or patterns of baldness on the crown with healthy dense coverage of hair at the sides and the back of the head, you are probably suitable for a hair transplant surgery. Hair that is transplanted in the frontal region of the skull generally offers the best results. However, a hair transplant procedure can also be carried out on any other area of your head if you have some bald patch there.

It is best to have detailed information about the hair transplant procedure before you make plans to undergo a surgery. It is only after you have read through all the information that you can understand and appreciate the significance of surgical hair restoration. The information will also help you decide whether you are the right candidate for the hair transplant surgery. Receiving a hair transplant can improve your appearance and self-confidence.

All those who can opt for a hair transplant:

  1. Men with male-pattern baldness

  2. Women suffering from hair thinning

  3. Anyone who has lost some hair from a burn or scalp injury

Hair replacement isn’t a good option for:

  1. Women with a wide-spread pattern of hair loss throughout the scalp

  2. People who don’t have enough “donor” hair sites from which to remove hair for transplant

  3. People who form keloid scars (thick, fibrous scars) after injury or surgery

  4. People whose hair loss is due to medication like chemotherapy

Two types of procedures

It's worth noting that there are new surgical techniques involved in hair transplants:

  1. FUE - Follicular Unit Extraction: The hairs are individually extracted from the back of the head and re-planted across the area. This is a lengthy, pain-staking process but the result is minimal scarring and a very natural-looking hairline.
  2. FUT - Follicular Unit Transplantation: This technique involves taking a larger area or 'strip' of hair from the back of the head, dividing it into smaller units and then re-planting those units in the desired area of hair loss. Scarring can be slightly more conspicuous at the back of the head as a larger area has been removed but an expert surgeon will minimise incision marks to ensure rapid healing.

Hair transplant do, of course, utilise your own natural hair and re-growth can be expected within 4 weeks of surgery. Great care must be taken during your recovery period to protect the newly-transplanted hair. However, once it is deemed safe to resume normal activities, the results can be life-transforming. A successful hair transplant is permanent and can restore confidence and self-esteem.

Hair Loss - How Can It Be Prevented With Homeopathic Treatment?

Numerous individuals suffer from hair loss and hair fall problems, which inevitably cause low self-esteem and low self-confidence. Although this is not a life threatening condition, but this disorder can spoil your looks.

Types of Hair Loss:

Here are four stages of Hair growth cycle, which include: anagen, catagen, telogen and exogen.

  • Anagen (Growing Phase): It lasts for 2-7 years and determines the length of hair.
  • Catagen (Transition Phase): It lasts for about 10 days. The hair follicle shrinks and detaches from the dermal papilla.
  • Telogen (Resting Phase): It lasts for around three months. Whilst the old hair is resting, a new hair begins the growth phase.
  • Exogen (New Hair Phase): It is a part of the resting phase where the old hair shed and a new hair continue to grow. Approximately 50 to 150 hairs can fall out daily, this is considered to be normal hair shedding.

There have been numerous kinds and types of medications for treating and preventing hair loss. However, homeopathy has proven to be amazing without causing any side effects. Homeopathy is an alternative medicine which uses no harsh chemicals and works on the principle of triggering the healing process in the body.

Possible situations that cause hair loss-

  1. Stress

  2. Too much vitamin A intake

  3. Pregnancy (hormonal changes and stress)

  4. Menopause

  5. Heredity

  6. Lack of protein

  7. Anaemia

  8. Various hormonal imbalances

  9. Deficiency of vitamin B

  10. Thyroid problems

  11. Alopecia Areata

  12. Drastic weight loss

  13. Ageing

Homeopathic medicines stimulate the hair roots to promote regrowth. The medicines used in Homeopathy to aid hair regrowth are all of natural origin and therefore, safe for use among persons of all age groups. The main advantage of opting for Homeopathic medicines for hair regrowth is the absence of any related toxic side effects. Some of the most common homeopathic treatments to prevent hair loss are-

  1. Hair loss due to Alopecia Areata: This disorder is caused due to the immune system, which mistakes hair for foreign objects and attacks it, thereby causing erratic loss of hair. The individual loses hair in patches haphazardly. There are numerous medicines for specific treatments of Alopecia. Some of them are listed below-?

    • Fluoric acid: This not only fights alopecia, but is also efficient in preventing hair fall after Syphilis, where hair breakage, hair fall and hair tangles increase immensely.

    • Phosphorus: This is very effective in treating alopecia and can also be used to heal other gastrointestinal problems, blood, bones and nervous tissue problems.

    • Calcarea carbonica: This is one of the best homeopathic medication for hair regrowth. It also prevents itching and sweating of the scalp.

    • Vinca minor: This is very effective in treating alopecia along with dandruff. Abnormal hair growth can also be treated with this medication.

  2. Hair loss due to Dandruff: Dandruff is a common problem and the worst part is that it brings intense hair fall with it. Dandruff is caused generally due to eczema and psoriasis. The medications that can be used are as follows-

    • Psorinum: Best treatment for preventing dandruff and hair loss caused along with it
    • Mezereum: Heals rashes and lesions and tackles hair fall in crusty scalps
    • Kali sulphuricum
    • Natrum muriaticum
    • Pulsatilla pratensis
  3. Baldness: Mostly affects men. Some of the recommended medicines include:
    • Silicea
    • Baryta carb
    • Lycopodium clavatum

However, it is advised that in case of hair loss, before you consume any medicines, visit a homeopathic practitioner for a thorough treatment.

Baldness - How Can Ayurveda Be Of Help?

Ayurveda, translated into science of life and longevity, has been practiced in India for more than 5000 years old and has gained worldwide popularity. It uses noninvasive and natural methods and produces minimal side effects and therefore is being widely accepted.

Ayurveda believes that the body is made of pitta, vata, and kapha doshas. Any disease is the result of imbalance between these or predominance of one over the others. Hair loss or alopecia is believed to be imbalance in the pitta dosha. This leads to slower hair growth, weak hair, and greater hair fall rate.

Something that affects image and self - esteem, many would like to cure or at least halt baldness. There are various treatment options that have a dual effect on baldness - reduce hair fall and promote hair growth, thereby providing a holistic treatment for baldness.

  1. Bhringraj Oil (Eclipta elba): It is used since centuries and promotes the normal hair growth cycle in an accelerated way.  It activates a large number of hair follicles and therefore, regular application is believed to help prevent alopecia (baldness).
  2. Amla (Phyllanthus emblica): While baldness has many reasons, dandruff is one of the most important and common causes. Amla is added to many hair oil formulations because of its proven effect to reduce dandruff. It acts on the fungi that thrive on the scalp and reduces inflammation of the scalp.
  3. Shikakai (Acacia concinna): Another very popular herb is the Shikakai. Used as a hair cleansing agent by many people, it is devoid of the chemical effect that shampoos carry. The pods are proven to prevent dandruff and promote hair growth.
  4. Tectona grandis: Another active ingredient of Ayurvedic formulations, the seeds of Tectona promote growth and development of hair follicles. Large number of follicles are activated, thereby producing thicker, fuller hair.
  5. Cuscuta reflexa: Another reason for baldness is hormonal imbalance, especially in males. Abnormalities with androgen, the male hormone, can trigger abnormal hair loss. Adding Cuscuta has been proven to reverse baldness by promoting a better anagen/telogen ratio, where hair folliclematuration happens.  In baldness cases, maturation happens only in about 20% of the follicles. Cuscuta activates the follicles and increases folliculardensity.  It also manages the hormonal imbalance by preventing conversion of testosterone into a variant called dihydrotestosterone that is believed to cause the damage.

While these and various other substances are believed to reduce baldness and promote hair growth, it is always important to remember that each body will respond differently to these substances. Thorough physical examination and a detailed history should be done before starting any of these products.

Tips To Choose Perfect Wig For Alopecia Hair Loss Patients!

Alopecia is generally the medical term that is used to define the phenomenon of hair loss. In majority of the cases, the cause behind the occurrence of alopecia remains unknown. Several studies based on this have shown that alopecia could well be a hereditary problem. The wigs help patients get back their confidence with a natural feel of hair.

Some of the factors that can cause alopecia or in simple words, hair loss, include:

Alopecia could well be a symptom of certain diseases like:

There are some women, who tend to experience hair loss after giving birth but in most of the cases, it is a temporary element.

Kinds of Alopecia

1. Alopecia Areata:

This kind of hair loss takes place mainly due to autoimmune response. Loss of hair is noticed mainly in the scalp region, with the formation of bald spots, sometimes taking the size of a nickel.

2. Alopecia Universalis:

Alopecia Universalis refers to the kind of hair loss that occurs right through the entire body. People who suffer from this kind of hair loss, tend to lose their eyelashes, eyebrows as well as hair from other parts of the body.

3. Alopecia Totalis:

Alopecia Totalis is caused mainly out of the autoimmune response. This type is associated with loss of hair, whose presence is there on the entire scalp.

4. Androgenetic Alopecia:

Androgenetic Alopecia refers to a kind of hair loss that is caused by factors related to heredity.

5. Traction Alopecia:

This type of Alopecia tends to occur when scalp comes across too much of friction along with excessive rubbing. Traction Alopecia is mostly prevalent among women or men, who carry ponytails, micro braid, weaves and cornrows.

Now, in the next segment, let us come to the Alopecia Wigs.

Alopecia Wigs

The wigs for Alopecia are basically full lace wigs, which are at times even called as full cranial prosthesis. Alopecia wigs are generally not that different from other wigs, which are full of lace. Full lace wigs and lace front wigs very much serve the same purpose regardless of the reason for which people need to wear them.

The full lace wigs are great and ideal for people who suffer from alopecia because:

  • They are all expertly made and each strand of hair is hand tied to give people a kind of an illusion as of it coming off one’s scalp
  • The full lace wigs can be customized as per the choice of colour, head size and texture
  • The variety of colours, textures and length give people a natural feel and help to make them feel secured and confident.

Hair Transplant Surgery - Knowing The Advantages Of It!

Hair Transplant Surgery - Knowing The Advantages Of It!

Hair transplantation surgery is a procedure where the hair follicles are taken from a donor site (usually the side or back of the head) and implanted on the recipient site that is on the area of baldness. This is a common treatment for men with androgenic alopecia (male pattern baldness) where the hair follicles reduce due to the influence of androgenic hormones. It can also help women with female pattern baldness.

Many people have reservations about the procedure but hair transplantation comes with a number of advantages, such as:

Natural growth after surgery - The biggest and most obvious benefit of hair transplantation is that it improves your physical appearance and eliminates the problem of balding completely. This is because the implanted hair follicles continue their natural growth process after they have been transplanted. So, your hair does not look artificial. Premature bald spots often result in low self-esteem and self-confidence issues which can be effectively addressed by the surgery.

Uniform distribution of hair follicles. Hair transplantation with latest techniques gives natural distribution of hair and proper coverage to bald areas.

Easy procedure and no side effects - The operation is done under local anaesthesia. You will feel no pain throughout the procedure. Very comfortable procedure and you will be awake throughout the procedure. This surgery is done at the level of skin and this is not related to the brain. There is no side effect of this surgery. Today, the surgeons mostly use micro grafts which are placed in such a way that all bald spots are covered with minimal effort.

One-time procedure - Hair transplantation is the only permanent solution of baldness. No medical treatment for baldness is permanent. Once hair transplantation has been done, it lasts a lifetime. Since the grafts are made of your own hair, they continue to grow naturally throughout your lifetime allowing you to cut or style your hair as you wish.

Hairfall or Alopecia - How Can Homeopathy Help In Getting Rid Of It?

One of the biggest worries that can be caused by a seemingly harmless thing is that caused by falling of hair or hair loss as it immediately throws up a stark image of a bald pate, which no one wants to have. The very thought of hairfall tends to lower your confidence about your looks. It may even make you a target of jokes. A commonly heard joke in our part of the world is that if one is losing hair, it is an indication that he is becoming rich. In reality, the opposite is more likely to be true.

A person with falling hair ends up losing or spending a fortune trying to stop the hair from falling and preserving one’s crowning glory. Moreover, there is no dearth of enterprising people out to fleece such patients who are already hassled.

Causes of Hairfall or Baldness

The causes of excessive hairfall can vary from person to person as there are various possible reasons for this phenomenon.

  1. Deficiency in one’s diet where one does not get adequate levels of the required minerals and vitamins can be one prominent cause. Micronutrients like Zinc, Selenium and Iron are important for the normal growth of hair and any deficiency in these can cause hairfall.
  2. The absence of good health or the presence of some or the other illness can also cause the hairfall to increase.
  3. In males, the most common cause is the androgenic baldness or the male pattern baldness. This variety of baldness is present only in males and tends to run in families. It occurs due to the presence of excess of testosterone, which results in increased hair growth all over the body but the hair on the head falls out.
  4. Fungal infections of the scalp can also cause baldness in patches. Other localised infections of the scalp can also cause hairfall.
  5. Hairfall can occur in females just after pregnancy or after delivery. This has to do with the changes in the hormones that occur during these phases.

Role of Homeopathy in Curing Hairfall

Homeopathy is very effective in treating hair fall or baldness or alopecia. As mentioned earlier, when we say baldness, we do not mean the male pattern baldness or the androgenic baldness. In such cases, we can only reduce the hairfall. But in other cases, the homeopathic medicines for hair fall not only treat the symptoms i.e. the hairfall but also cure the systemic problems that are the root cause of the hairfall. In case the bald spots are happening due to fungal infections, the homeopathic medicines eradicate the fungus completely and the hair grow back on their own completely naturally.

Homeopathic Medicines For Hair Fall or Baldness or Alopecia

Homeopathic medicines like Acid Flour, Phosphorus, Lycopodium, Thuja and Silicea have been very effective in treating hair loss. It is very important to study the patient in great detail and find the exact cause of the problem and treat the root cause. Sometimes, there may be some hidden stress in the mind of the patient which may have caused this hairfall and it also needs to be treated accordingly if we want a permanent cure to the problem. Given below are the 5 best Homeopathic medicines for hair fall or baldness-

  1. Acid Flour – best homeopathic medicine for baldness in spots
  2. Thuja – best remedy for hair fall with dandruff
  3. Lycopodium – best medicine for hair fall after delivery
  4. Silicea – best treatment for baldness with constipation
  5. Phosphorus - best medicine for hair falling out in handfuls

These medicines are very effective in treating hair fall or baldness. The only thing is that the symptoms of the patient should be matched carefully with the right homeopathic medicine. In a lot of cases, some different medicine might be required based on the symptoms of the patient.

PRP Therapy For Hair Loss - How Is It Useful?

PRP Therapy For Hair Loss - How Is It Useful?

Hair Loss is a major concern for each and every individual, as it hampers one’s style and has a major impact on the self-confidence. Male-pattern hair loss has a combination of male hormones and genetics, while on the other hand, the cause behind hair loss in females is supposed to be autoimmune in nature. Platelet-Rich Plasma is one of the many treatments for hair loss, which people can try out and get desired result. The plasma contains white blood cells and platelets, which are rich in growth factors. Let’s go deep into what exactly Platelet-Rich Plasma is and its role in hair growth.

What is Platelet-Rich Plasma?
Platelet-Rich Plasma or PRP is a concentration of platelet-rich plasma protein, which gets derived from whole blood, with the aim to remove red blood cells. There is a fairly greater concentration of growth factors than whole blood and it is generally used to encourage a swift healing response to different specialities. Using PRP is a great option for treating the problem of hair loss as it has numerous scientifically based articles showing:

  • Its effectiveness in increasing hair count
  • Improves thickness of the hair

Platelet-Rich Plasma Treatment Procedure
Like most procedures, a careful process is involved in using Platelet-Rich Plasma for re-growth of hair. A standard amount of blood is drawn from a patient’s arm. The tube, containing the blood is put inside a machine, known as a centrifuge, which helps to spin the blood tube and get the red blood cells separated from the plasma. Then the plasma, which is rich in platelets, gets injected directly on to the scalp, right at the level of the hair follicles. The process is carried out meticulously, starting off with injections across the scalp, which is injected approximately at every half inch over the area, having thin hair as a result of hair fall. The whole process takes less than 30 minutes.

Results

  • Maintaining consistency is the key towards achieving the best results of this treatment.
  • People need to undergo this treatment ideally once a month for three to four months in the initial phase and then gradually increase it to every six months thereafter.
  • The extent of treatment depends upon how an individual patient responds and results it shows.
  • If the treatment procedure is maintained on a regular basis, the desired results can be seen within the first two to three months.

Risk Factors

  • There is no risk involved in being part of this treatment.
  • Most of the patients receive injections without getting the areas numbed, as there is minimum discomfort.
  • In case, a patient comes across any sort of pain, cool air or ice packs can be used to minimize it.

Cosmetic Treatments for Hair Loss

Loss of hair can have adverse effects on your physical as well as mental health. Not only does hair loss affect your self-esteem or appeal, it also hints at an underlying health problem. There could be many reasons for the loss of hair. ‘Alopecia areata’ is a condition wherein sudden loss of hair begins with one or more circular bald patches that might or might not overlap.

Some of the common cosmetic treatments for hair loss include:

  1. Hair Grafting or Transplant: Hair transplant or grafting is a procedure that uses surgery to move hair follicles from one spot in the body to another and is mainly used to treat male pattern baldness. The transplantations are carried out in outpatient form, with local anesthesia and mild sedation. Harvesting of hair follicles is done using various methods, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Some of the common harvesting techniques are:
  2. Strip Harvesting: A strip of skin from the scalp or from any other spot where there is good growth of hair is harvested by the surgeon.
  3. Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE): Follicular Unit Extraction is a procedure which involves the singular extraction of each hair follicle without any removal of strip of tissue.
  4. Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT): Follicular Unit Transplant involves the removal of a small strip of tissue from the rear part of the head. The donor hair follicles would be extracted from this strip.
  5. Robotic Hair Restoration: The devices associated with Robotic Hair Restoration utilize robotic arms and cameras to provide assistance to the surgeon during the FUE procedure.
  6. Scalp Reduction: This cosmetic procedure involves removal of skin (non-hair-bearing) from the scalp, which ensures that the remaining skin (hair-bearing) can be extended to the area that it is capable of covering the bald spots on the head. This procedure is effective in covering bald areas on the back as well as top of the head. However, it is not favourable for the hairline in the frontal areas of the head.

Alopecia Universalis Treatment With Ayurveda!

Alopecia Universalis is a condition that causes intense hair loss. This kind is unlike any other form of Alopecia. It causes complete loss of hair from your scalp and baldness. Although this is a type of Alopecia Areata, it differs from the common symptoms of the other alopecias - alopecia areata and alopecia totalis.

Symptoms –
The most common signs of alopecia universalis are the loss of-

  1. Body hair
  2. Eyebrow hair
  3. Eyelashes
  4. Scalp hair
  5. Pubic hair

Causes-

In case of alopecia, the immune system of the body attacks the hair follicles believing it to be an intruder. The hair follicles are attacked as a defense mechanism, which causes hair loss.

Many doctors believe it to have genetic links, however there are certain other factors that stimulate this condition.

  1. Environmental triggers
  2. A long term illness
  3. Medicines
  4. Nutritional deficiency
  5. Thyroid disorder
  6. High levels of stress
  7. Vaccinations
  8. Skin diseases
  9. Exposure to chemicals

Risk factors-

People with Alopecia Universalis have an increased risk of developing other diseases such as vitiligo and thyroid disorder.

Ayurvedic Treatment-

Ayurveda believes in the philosophy that people who suffer from diseases have an imbalance of basic life energies in the body. Once the patient starts to receive treatment, the energy produced in the body from the restoration of organic processes to their original state helps in fighting the diseases effectively. Ayurveda terms consistent hair loss as ‘khalitya’ that is further categorized under ‘Shiroroga’.

Romakupagata/Keshamulagata pitta or bhrajaka pitta along with vata imbalance dislodges the hair from its roots. Sleshma/Kapha obstructs the hair roots which in turn does not allow any new hair to grow again.

Treatment Methods-

  1. Pitta Pacification- An effective ayurvedic treatment, it improves the digestive fire by following a pitta pacification diet chart and through pitta decreasing medications. This therapy is highly beneficial since it completely eliminates bodily toxins by means of natural herbs.
  2. Applying ayurvedic oil- Medicated herbal oils induced with Jasminum grandifolium can treat baldness
  3. Panchakarma therapy- Ayurveda focuses on two major treatment methods, ‘shodhana’ and ‘shamana’. Shodhana is the purification of the body and shamana refers to treatment with medicines. Panchkarma is an important form of shodhana. This is a five(pancha) remedy/therapy(karma) which applies ayurvedic procedures to clean or purge the entire body.
    • Shirodhara is performed by gently pouring a continuous stream of medicated, warm herbal oil on the forehead. A typical massage session extends for half an hour. Sometimes the oil is also replaced with herbal liquids, which rejuvenates the follicles of the dry hair.
    • Nasya involves application of oils and medications through the nostrils which is supposed to have immediate effects on the hair and scalp. Ayurvedic medicated oil is poured through one nostrils and the toxins can be spitted out through mouth. This way it helps the body get rid of impurities.
  4. Ayurvedic hot oil massages- This is done on the scalp, which can effectively arrest hair loss and prompt hair regrowth. Extract from teak wood, Bhringaraj and Jatamansi are commonly used Ayurvedic herbs applied to treat hair and scalp disorders.
  5. Diet- Since ayurveda believes our hair to be a by-product of the bone tissue formation, it is essential to consume food rich in calcium, iron for healthy bones and healthy body. Along with this, one should also consume foods and liquids that purify the liver and blood.
