There are many causes for genu valgum (knock knees). Most cases are developmental, where people are born with the deformity and it becomes more noticeable with time. An injury to the growth plate in a child can also lead to knock knees. Knock knees can be surgically corrected.

In almost all cases of genu valgum, the condition will resolve itself before a child reaches adolescence. For older children and adults, the most likely form of therapy involves stretches and exercises to realign the knees and relieve pain. Some people might find relief with orthotics or braces.

Knock knee or genu valgum is a misalignment of the legs that causes the knees to bend inward. The condition is apparent in kids but usually corrects itself, as they grow up. However, some adults may also develop the disorder due to an injured knee, obesity, lack of vitamin d and calcium, arthritis in the knee.
Surgery is only required for the condition if other treatments do not work and the condition is severe.

Yes, there is no age limit for corrective surgery for knock knees. The surgical technique used may vary depending on age. Adults can benefit from osteotomy surgery on the knee to obtain a correction. Older patients with arthritis will often receive a knee replacement to treat both problems with great success.

If you stand with your ankle touching each other and the inner aspect of your knees rub each other, you have knock knees. Its a physiological variation and you cannot correct it by any means except surgery which is only advisable in genu valgum (significant knock knees) (certainly not in your case). So cheers. The army has this weird protocol since colonial times which they are reluctant to change.
