According to me this is inflammation of a tendon of your thumb finger. Give rest thumb finger. Consultant physiotherapist near you. Few days physiotherapy is completely cured your problem.

Like 1) how long she has this problem 2) does this stiffness have on both the hands?
3) is there any morning stiffness? If yes how long that persist? 4) does she has mild fever in the morning?
If your wife had those symptoms then you should consult with a rheumatologist.
