Diet Chart For Pneumonia

Pneumonia is a infectious disease caused due to bacteria, virus or fungus.It causes the inflammation of air sacs in the lungs known as alveoli. The alveoli fills up with pus or fluid making it difficult to breathe.

Generally the symptoms include high body temperature, sweating, chills, coughing that may produce phlegm, shortness of breathe and chest pain. One must visit a doctor and take the prescribed drugs along with rest. During this the body requires specific nutrients which has to be followed to keep the situation in check. There is a severe risk of getting dehydrated and hence the diet must include a lot of fluids. Generally, It is commonly observed that patients develop a condition known as anorexia for temporary period in which the patient loses the feeling to eat.

Hence the patient must be kept on a liquid diet like:

  1. Freshly made smoothies, milk shakes and should try to give light meals containing lean meat, fishes and boiled vegetables.
  2. Some doctors also suggest to keep the patient on a liquid meal supplement in case of loss of appetite.
  3. Commonly advised liquid meal supplement would be Ensure or Fresubin or ask for any other high - energy liquid meal supplement.
  4. It is advisable to serve this liquid supplement cold as it is more acceptable to the patient with loss of appetite.
  5. Including vitamin and mineral supplements during recovery is also helpful and beneficial for the patient.

Wednesday
Breakfast (8:00-8:30AM)Rice flake Pulav (1 cup) with peas and carrots
Mid-Meal (11:00-11:30AM)Tender cococnut water (1 cup) + 1 orange
Lunch (2:00-2:30PM)Mashed potato(2) n Boiled rice (1/2 cup) + Boiled egg (1) + Ghee (2tsp) on warm rice
Evening (4:00-4:30PM)Chicken soup (1/3 cup)
Dinner (8:00-8:30PM)Boiled rice (1/3 cup) + Fish(1pc) stew (1/3 cup) + Warm Rasgolla (2)
Thursday

Saturday

Mid-Meal (11:00-11:30AM)Tender coconut water (1 cup) + Black grapes (1/2 cup)
Lunch (2:00-2:30PM)Yellow matar daal curry (1/2 cup) + 1/4th fresh lime on it.
Evening (4:00-4:30PM)Spinach soup (1/2 cup)
Dinner (8:00-8:30PM)Boiled rice (1/3 cup) + Fish(1pc) stew (1/3 cup) + Warm Rasgolla (2)

Food Items To Limit

  1. Avoid eating foods that you are allergic or sensitive to
  2. All sugar and sugar products, including an excess of sweet fruits
  3. Soft drinks and commercially processed foods
  4. All foods containing artificial ingredients, such as additives, colorings, flavorings, and preservatives.
  5. Milk and dairy products, as they contribute greatly to mucus in the body
  6. Coffee and all other caffeinated products.

Do's And Dont's

Do's:

  1. Visit your doctor at the earliest.
  2. Give treatment on time as advised
  3. Keep yourself hydrated
  4. Take regualr meals
  5. Look for danger signs like lethargy, bluish discolouration, no oral intake, dehydration, severe breathing difficulty, etc.

Don'ts:

  1. Don’t panic
  2. Don’t self medicate.
  3. Don’t ignore the danger signs.

Food Items You Can Easily Consume

  1. Drink plenty of pure filtered water
  2. Plenty of fresh organic vegetables especially romaine lettuce, carrots, beets, onions, celery, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, cucumber, radishes, Jerusalem artichokes, beans (except soy and green peas)
  3. Veggie soups, miso soup, preferably soaked nuts and seeds, organic, free-range meats, poultry, and fish.
  4. Small quantities of fresh sweet fruits – limit your selection to plums and pears, all berries, including Goji berries, and other less sweet exotic fruits
  5. Non-sweet fruits such as avocado, pepper, tomato and cucumbers
  6. Garlic, ginger, cayenne pepper, chili peppers, and onions should be eaten regularly, due to their powerful health benefits for the lungs and overall respiratory system
