Managing Hair Fall With A Healthy Diet

Hair fall is a serious and an equally depressing problem affecting people worldwide. What is even more frightening is the fact that young adults (both men and women) are mostly at the receiving end. Hair fall is the last thing a person would want. Most people find the situation very embarrassing. It does their confidence no good either. It affects their overall appearance, making them look older than their age.

Though the medications and treatment can help deal with the problem to an extent, it is the diet that plays the most important role. Lack of essential nutrients and minerals in the diet can contribute extensively in aggravating the hair fall problem. The following food items (fruits and vegetables included) go a long way in controlling and preventing the hair fall problem.

  1. Omega-3 fatty acids: Omega-3 fatty acids are as important to the body as oxygen, if not more. In some people, inflammation (caused by medical conditions such as Dermatitis, Eczema, Seborrhea or Ringworms) can trigger hair loss. Omega-3 fatty acids come as a savior in such cases. Known for its anti-inflammatory properties, it can be instrumental in controlling the hair loss. Foods such as salmon, flax seeds, nuts, soybeans are a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids. Salmon is also known to improve the insulin resistance, thereby checking the baldness in males and females (male-pattern) to some extent.
  2. Spinach to the rescue: Iron and Vitamin D (D2) deficiency can be the underlying causes of hair loss in some women. Spinach is known for its high iron and vitamin (vitamin C) content. Incorporating spinach into the diet has helped to increase the iron level in many women. One needs to take enough sunlight to maintain desired levels of vitamin D in the body.
  3. Nutty magic: As per a study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology (January 2015), a diet rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, omega-6 fatty acids, and antioxidants can go a long way in reversing the female-pattern hair loss. Walnuts, flax seeds are excellent sources of omega-3 fatty acids, omega-6 fatty acids, antioxidants, and thus, should be included in the diet.Being a rich source of Vitamin E, Vitamin B2, fiber, phosphorous, manganese, copper, magnesium, and biotin, almonds are also known to promote hair growth.
  4. Carroty delight: Carrot is an all rounder that takes care of all kinds of hair problems. From Vitamins (A, B6, B1, B3, B2, K, C,) to minerals such as phosphorous and potassium, carrots contain them all. It is known to increase the blood circulation, thereby promoting hair growth. A carrot a day is sure to make your hair strong, healthy, and lustrous.
  5. Eggs: Proteins are a must to keep your hair healthy and damage free. When it comes to protein, there cannot be a better option than eggs. While you can use eggs as a hair mask for deep conditioning, including it in the diet will also provide fruitful results.
  6. Fruits like blueberry, orange, apple, papaya, Indian gooseberry (amla), guava, are also known to promote hair growth.
  7. Oats not only helps in weight reduction but also prevents hair loss. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Dermatologist.

Causes of Hair Fall!

1. Physical stress

Any kind of physical trauma—surgery, a car accident, or a severe illness, even the flu—can cause temporary hair loss. This can trigger a type of hair loss called telogen effluvium. Hair has a programmed life cycle: a growth phase, rest phase and shedding phase. When you have a really stressful event, it can shock the hair cycle, (pushing) more hair into the shedding phase. Hair loss often becomes noticeable three-to-six months after the trauma.

2. Pregnancy

Pregnancy is one example of the type of physical stress that can cause hair loss (that and hormones). Pregnancy-related hair loss is seen more commonly after your baby has been delivered rather than actually during pregnancy.

3. Too much vitamin A

Overdoing vitamin A-containing supplements or medications can trigger hair loss,

4. Lack of protein

If you don't get enough protein in your diet, your body may ration protein by shutting down hair growth. This can happen about two to three months after a drop in protein intake.

5. Male Pattern Baldness

About two out of three men experience hair loss by age 60, and most of the time it's due to male pattern baldness. This type of hair loss, caused by a combo of genes and male sex hormones, usually follows a classic pattern in which the hair recedes at the temples, leaving an M-shaped hairline.

6. Heredity

Female-pattern hair loss, called androgenic or androgenetic alopecia, is basically the female version of male pattern baldness. If you come from a family where women started to have hair loss at a certain age, then you might be more prone to it. Unlike men, women don't tend to have a receding hairline, instead their part may widen and they may have noticeable thinning of hair.

7. Female hormones

Just as pregnancy hormone changes can cause hair loss, so can switching or going off birth-control pills. This can also cause telogen effluvium, and it may be more likely if you have a family history of hair loss. The change in the hormonal balance that occurs at menopause may also have the same result.

8. Emotional stress

Emotional stress is less likely to cause hair loss than physical stress, but it can happen, for instance, in the case of divorce, after the death of a loved one, or while caring for an aging parent. More often, though, emotional stress won't actually precipitate the hair loss. It will exacerbate a problem that's already there.

9. Anemia

Almost one in 10 women aged 20 through 49 suffers from anemia due to an iron deficiency (the most common type of anemia), which is an easily fixable cause of hair loss.

Hair fall is becoming a fast emerging and very common problem, affecting a vast majority.
There has to be a cause which is affecting many of us without our knowledge. Here is a quick look at the common factors causing hair loss in women:-
1) iron defeciency:- anaemia is a very common cause of hair loss, please get it checked, especially if you also fell easily tired or breathless with little work or dizzy or lightheaded after suddenly getting up from siting position etc.
2) vitamin d deficiency:- it is a very common deficiency in indian women. You may be suffering from this especially if you also have pain in big joints like the knees or long bones of the body like shin bone and hip bone.
3) protein deficiency:- according to a study recently, almost more than 90% indians are having a protein deficient diet. Low protein coupled with high glycemic diet will surely increase hair fall and sometimes even pimples.
4) hormonal causes:- these are fast becoming very important causes, they may be directly or indirectly related to diet and lifestyle issues. There are tests to evaluate these and can be corrected if detected well in time.
5) thyroid:- thyroid gland problems can be a cause especially if there is a family history of mother or sisters having thyroid gland problems. The patient may suffer from extreme sleepiness or sudden weight gain or sudden loss, anxiety, palpitation etc.

There are many solutions to the problem of hair fall, it is most important to correct the internal causes also, only external treatments may not help alone.
There are many non hormonal supplement based treatments and therapy kits now available which may help you not only stop hair fall, but have thick luscious hair too.
