Allergic Rhinitis - 6 Alternative Treatments For It!

Allergic rhinitis is also known as hay fever. This is a seasonal cold allergy condition that comes with many symptoms like reddening and watering of eyes, blocked and runny nose, flu, headaches and many others. The causes of hay fever include exposure to dust, nettle, pollen, pet hair and even pollution. While most doctors prescribe anti allergies to deal with this problem, it can also be cured and treated with the help of alternative treatments.

Let us find out about six such treatments:

1. Chinese Medicine: Traditional Chinese Medicine is also known as TCM, and it usually works by incorporating eight essential herbs along with massages, acupuncture and dietary tweaks in order to create a basis for treatment. These methods aim at creating a more congenial environment within the body of the patient so that the patient is more equipped to deal with the problem causing allergens that come in from the environment outside.

2. Acupuncture and Acupressure: This is also a Chinese form of treatment that aims at redistributing the Qi or Chi, which is the life giving energy within us. With the help of this needle based treatment, the various points in the body are activated so that the Chi quotient is more favourable and fights these allergens and symptoms with greater gusto.

3. Ayurveda: This is an ancient life science that originated India. With the use of herbs, condiments and spices in one's everyday life, Ayurveda brings in other methods of treatment including Yogic postures and poses, dietary changes, massages and more in order to treat conditions such as allergic rhinitis. The problem of hay fever or allergic rhinitis may be cured with the use of seven herbs including piper nigrum, terminalia bellerica, piper longum, and others which can help in soothing the symptoms and creating resistance towards the allergens in the long run. Along with this, Jal Neti can also be practised so as to clear the nasal tracts and airways. One should also avoid food that is cold and can give rise to an aggravation of the dosha in question.

4. Ointment: The use of herbal allergy absorbing creams and ointments can also help in averting the onset of conditions like allergic rhinitis. These ointments or creams may contain long chain hydrocarbons which can get absorbed into the nasal mucosa. It can be applied three times in a day.

5. Capsaicin: Extracted from red peppers, this wonder ingredient can help in desensitising the nerve fibres in thenasal tract which create hyperresponsiveness of the nose. In this way, this ingredient can curb the allergic reaction.

6. Gavyamrut Grut: Gavyamrut Grut is made by mixing pure cow ghee with certain herbs. It should be used as nasal drops and is a very effective and time tested remedy for allergic rhinitis.

As a part of the treatment, one must also take care to avoid allergens that cause the allergic rhinitis.

Know Your Knee And Avoid Arthritis!

The knee is the joint where the bones of the lower and upper legs meet. The largest joint in the body, the knee moves like a hinge, allowing you to sit, squat, walk or jump.

The knee is vulnerable to injury and to the development of osteoarthritis.

The knee consists of three bones:

• femur - the upper leg bone, or thigh bone

• tibia - the bone at the front of the lower leg, or shin bone

• patella - the thick, triangular bone that sits over the other bones at the front of the knee, or kneecap.

The ends of the bones are covered with a layer of cartilage, a slick, elastic material that absorbs shock and allows the bones to glide easily against one another as they move.

Between the tibia and femur bone are two crescent-shaped pads of cartilage that reduce friction and disperse the weight of the body across the joint.

The bones are held together by a joint capsule, which consists of two distinct layers – an outer layer of dense connective tissue and an inner membrane, called the synovium, which secretes a fluid to lubricate the joint.

The outer layer of the capsule is attached to the ends of the bones and is supported by these ligaments and tendons

Two groups of muscles support the knee.

• Hamstrings - muscles on the back of the thigh, which run from the hip to just below the knee and work to bend the knee.

Quadriceps - four muscles on front of the thigh that run from the hip to the knee and straighten the knee from a bent position.

Arthritis of the Knee

Arthritis is inflammation of one or more of your joints. Any joint in the body may be affected by the disease, but it is particularly common in the knee.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common chronic disorder that affects the joints. OA of the knee happens when the cartilage, or cushion, between the knee joints breaks down. This can cause pain, stiffness, and swelling. It is a degenerative,"wear-and-tear" type of arthritis that occurs most often in people 50 years of age and older, but may occur in younger people, too.

Knee arthritis can make it hard to do many everyday activities, such as walking or climbing stairs. It is a major cause of lost work time and a serious disability for many people.

Symptoms

  1. A knee joint affected by arthritis may be painful and inflamed.
  2. The joint may become stiff and swollen, making it difficult to bend and straighten the knee.
  3. Pain and swelling may be worse in the morning, or after sitting or resting.
  4. Vigorous activity may cause pain to flare up.
  5. The knee may "lock" or "stick" during movement. It may creak, click, snap or make a grinding noise (crepitus).
  6. Many people with arthritis note increased joint pain with rainy weather.

In Ayurveda, osteoarthritis is considered a disease of malnutrition that tends to affect vulnerable joints (due to previous injury or infection, congenital reasons etc). When Agni (the ‘digestive fire’ ) is not working properly, wastes or toxins known as Ama are produced instead of useful nutrients for the tissues. These toxins accumulate in the gut and at the same time, Vata (Air/Ether) accumulates in the colon.

Causes of Vata aggravation include: eating excessively cold, dry, rough, bitter, astringent or pungent foods; irregular meal; excessive travelling; constant multitasking and rushing around; high stress; lack of proper sleep; excessively cold or dry environments;  a physically or mentally traumatic event; change or shock; excessive movement.

Aggravated Vata along with Ama (toxins) move from the gut into the channels of circulation, find places in the body that are weak or vulnerable (in this case the joints) and  settle in. Ama can block the channels supplying nutrients to the joints causing further malnutrition. The deterioration and subsequent irritation in the joint causes inflammation, stiffness, swelling and pain.

In both cases of arthritis (Rheumatoid and osteoarthritis) strengthening Agni and removing Ama is the immediate concern.

This is achieved by the following:

Diet :

  1. Take regular meals
  2. Eat fresh fruits and vegetables
  3. Avoid vata aggravating food that is bitter, astringent and spicy.
  4. Take desi cow ghee in diet.

Exercise:

Regular exercise under proper guidance can help:

  1. With weight loss, which can ease the strain put on your joins
  2. Preserve range of motions in the joints
  3. Improve muscle strength
  4. Reduce joint pain and swelling

Medicines:

The herbs boswellia, turmeric, dashmool, ashwagandha, ginger, triphala, guggulu, and shatavari have all been shown to decrease inflammation by interfering with the production of inflammatory chemicals in the body

PanchakarmaThis detoxification treatment eliminate the vitiated Dosha from body and purifies body & mind.

Ayurveda tips to treat Cervical Spondylosis (Osteoarthritis of Neck)

Cervical spondylosis is a common degenerative condition of the cervical spine which is caused by age-related changes in the cushion between the joints of the neck and the neck bone. It is also called as Osteoarthritis of neck. In this disease intervertebral disc which acts as a cushion between two vertebrae gets damaged due to age-related changes or other reasons. As disk degeneration occurs, movements of neck get restricted; also edges of vertebra get damaged & these changes increase pressure on nerves originating from cervical vertebrae. Due to this there are many symptoms found in this disease.

According to Ayurveda, this condition occurs due to Sandhigata vata of Neck. Vitiated vata dosha causes following symptoms.

Symptoms-

Pain in the back of neck, shoulder and arms, stiffness of the neck and even paraplegia occur due to this condition. The movement of the spine generally aggravates the pain of the neck.

Pain along the arms and fingers while standing, sitting, coughing and tilting the neck backward, Problem in lifting the arm or grasping something firmly, Headaches which occur mostly at the back side of the head as well as Feeling dizziness or loss of body balance is often found as symptom in this disease.

Tips for treatment-

1. Avoid amla (Sour), kashay(pungent), highly acidic foods like red meat, citrus fruits and even white potatoes which increases vata dosha in body which further damages bones.

2. Avoid Constipation at all cost, it increases pain & stiffness of neck. Ayurveda uses anulomana medicines during treatment, which avoids constipation & also pacifies vata dosha. For that medicated castor oil, Rasna erandadi kashaya, Nimba amrutadi eranda taila, triphala is used according to condition & severity.

3. Cows ghee is best vata shamak & acts best in degenerative diseses, so snehapana (oleation therapy) should be done with medicated cow ghee like- Panchatikta ghrut, Mahatikta ghrut etc.

4. Also (Snehana-swedana) external application of medicated oil followed by steam relieves muscle spasm around neck & pain can be minimized.

5. Ayurvedic Basti/ Vasthi (medicated enema) has been described as best treatment for vata diseases. Ayurveda classics had mentioned Panchatikta kshir basti in treatment of osteoarthritis which is also found very beneficial in treatment of cervical spondylosis. 8 days treatment with such basti shows marked improvement in this disease.

6. Manya Basti or greeva basti can also be done for treatment of cervical spondylosis. In Manya Basti neck region is bathed in pool of medicated warm oil for 30 minutes.

7. Avoid diet that’s very high in protein. It can interfere with the absorption of calcium. Also, avoid salt, phosphorus (from fizzy drinks), caffeine and alcohol can affect calcium obtained.

8. Exposure to cold, cold baths and any violent exercise of the neck muscles are very bad for the patients.

9. Ayurvedic medicines like shallaki, Rasna, Guggulu (Commiphora mukul), Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia), Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Shunthi (Ginger) as well as some rasa medicines like vata vidhvans rasa, bruhat vata chintamani rasa are best medicines for treating cervical spondylosis but these must be used with experts advice.

10. During study or office work your sitting posture should be straight, don’t lean too much while reading or during office work.

11. Sleep on a firm mattress that keeps your head level. The pillows should not bend the back more than 15 degrees. Avoid sleeping on your stomach as it extends the neck. It is ideal to sleep on your back or your side.

12. Yoga postures like Bhujangasana (Cobra pose), Matsyasana (Fish pose), Dhanurasana (Bow pose) are extremely beneficial for cervical spondylosis.
