Being constipated means that your bowel movements don’t happen normally. But, what’s normal? We know that the normal length of time between bowel movements varies widely from person to person. Some people go to the loo three times a day and that’s normal for them. In general, not clearing your bowels for more than three days is usually considered too long. The stool also becomes hard and difficult to pass after three days.

  2. Drink 1 1/2 to litres of water and other fluids a day.
  3. Avoid caffeine found in tea, coffee and soft drinks. This can exasperate constipation
  4. Cut back on dairy, especially milk.
  5. Exercise regularly. Just 30 minutes of walking or some activity can manage constipation.
  6. Don’t hold back from going to the bathroom when you feel the urge.
  7. Eat more vitamin B 12. Sometimes lack of this vitamin can cause constipation. A deficiency can also make you tired, weak and nervous.
  8. Stress is a big cause of constipation. Be sure to nix it as it causes changes in the body that cause problems in your body like constipation.
  9. The gastrointestinal system is especially sensitive to stress so anything meditative like Tai chi, yoga or listening to music can be a big relief.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) - Knowing The Symptoms & Management Options!

The human body with its multiple organs is a highly complicated structure and one or more organs often malfunction for various reasons. However, for some, no reasons are identified for this problem. One such is irritable bowel syndrome or IBS as it is commonly referred to.

It is a common disorder affecting the large intestine leading to alternate bouts of diarrhea and constipation, abdominal cramps and a feeling of fullness. It is common in people younger than 45 years of age, affects women more than men, and though the exact reason is not known, the following are attributed.

Physical/Physiologic reasons:

1. Signal issues between the brain and intestines: For various or even unknown reasons, the brain may not be able to send the right signal to the stomach to process food, making the stomach to be hyperactive and have an increased sense of pain or sensitivity or discomfort. Neurotransmitters, which are chemicals responsible for sending signals to various organs also could be involved.

2. Hormonal connection: Menstrual periods tend to aggravate symptoms of IBS, while postmenopausal women are largely free of IBS symptoms.

3. Genetics: People with a family history of IBS are more likely to develop IBS too.

4. Aggravating foods: Foods rich in carbohydrates, spicy foods, fatty foods, caffeine and alcohol aggravate IBS symptoms. Ability to absorb sugar could be a cause too.

5. Infections: Some people with IBS have certain bacteria identified in their gut which produces excessive gas and this could lead to altered bowel movements.

6. GI Motility Issues: Alterations in the way the food passes through the stomach can lead to either constipation (slow movement) or diarrhea (quicker movement). There could also be spasms and contractions after eating, especially if the stresslevels are high.

7. Psychological issues: Panic disorder, anxietydepression, and post-traumatic stress disorder are common in IBS patients. It is possible that they are not able to express their psychological stress, it manifests as physical symptoms. Stress increases symptoms of IBS and vice versa.

Management:

1. Manage stress: Meditationyoga, support groups, medication and even hypnosis in severely stressed people helps control stress, providing great relief in IBS symptoms.

2. Lifestyle changes: Reduce alcohol and smoking

3. Dietary changes: Avoid aggravating foods, increase the amount of fiber if you have diarrhea and space out meals to avoid intestinal overload

4. Herbal remedies: Probiotics, peppermint oil and a variety of herbal medicines are available.

5. Symptomatic medications: Based on presenting symptoms, different medications including antibiotics for infections and motility drugs can be used. Anti anxiety and antidepressants are also prescribed to manage the psychological issues.

With the super-busy lifestyle that everybody is gravitating to, there is less and less time for everything, including cooking and eating. More and more processed foods are finding their way into the refrigerator, which can just be picked up and eaten anytime hunger pangs are felt. And we do not immediately realize that processed foods are devoid of all the essential ingredients. What we end up eating has less fiber, more salt, more preservatives (generally not very safe for all) - all leading to an unhealthy lifestyle.

Refined flour, white sugar, cheese, juices, canned juices, cheese-laden pizzas and breads, frozen foods - all these sound yummy but not something readily accepted and digested by your stomach. Try eating pizza with loads of cheese for two days and experience the bloated feeling for yourself. Not to scare you but imagine this - you would have to eat an entire medium pizza to get like 2 g of fiber. Your body requires about 25 to 40 g of fiber per day for regular health maintenance.

Biologically, our digestive system requires a lot of fiber which adds to the roughage. This is very important to help in digestion and to aid in cleansing the bowel after that. The function of the large intestine is to remove water and essential ingredients when food passes through it. A junk food passes through quite quickly, thereby leading to loss of water and ingredients. A lot of digestive issues are also related to lack of fiber in the food - polyps, colon cancer, irritable bowel syndrome, high cholesterol, and obesity.

Most of us are aware but tend to ignore the fact that junk food is well as the name says, junk. There is hardly anything of great nutritious value in it. There is a lot of salt and fat and artificial chemicals which all make it very tasty but with not-very-good nutritious value. Try to eat only junk food for about a week regularly, and you will surely feel:

1. Bloated (a lot of gas due to indigestion)
2. Dehydrated (excessive salt needs more water, which we don't realize)
3. Constipated (lack of fiber leading to reduced bowel movement)
4. Weak and lousy (lack of nutrition)

This, of course, does not include the harmful effects on skin, hair, looks, etc.
It does not mean you have to stop eating junk completely and eat only healthy all the time. The human body is adaptive and can take adjust to a lot of variations. It is not wise to try the example above (eating pizza for a week), while binging on junk food once in a week would definitely not hurt. Use your discretion as nobody knows your body as well as you do.

Constipation in children can be effectively dealt with by monitoring a well-balanced diet. Eating the following things and drinking nearly three liters of water each day can relieve your child from stool withholding. 

  1. Eat these fruits raw:  Apples, plums and pears should be eaten raw along with their skins. These fruits are known to contain an average of 4.4 to 3.3 grams of dietary fiber that will further stimulate bowel movements. Apples, pears and plums are rich in pectin and hence help in softening your stool.
  2. Add nuts to your daily diet: Nuts can help you if you are suffering from constipation. However, nuts should not be consumed in excess as they can make you gain calories. Having a fistful of nuts once in a day could work wonders for your digestive health. 
  3. Have a high- fiber cereal for breakfast: High- fiber cereal for breakfast can give your day a good start. It prevents stool withholding. Cereals in present times no more taste bland. You may add some honey to your child's bowl of cereals; honey acts as a laxative and caters to a person's taste buds as well. If your cereal is not sufficiently fiber dense you may add some flaxseed to every single serving.
  4. Sweet berries can be of great help: Berries have nutrients that are known to cure symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Blueberries, blackberries, strawberries and raspberries should be included in a child's diet. These fruits are rich in vitamin C and vitamin K. They are good for a child's fiber and copper requirements.
  5. Get a full night's sleep: A full night's sleep is extremely important for good digestion. Improper digestion could be the reason behind continual constipation. Children these days tend to keep awake till late. Children should at least get seven to eight hours of sleep regularly.  

In spite of following a healthy lifestyle the problem of constipation may still persist. It is best to consult a professional doctor in such a case. Before seeing a doctor to remedy constipation it is important to jot down certain points regarding your child's health.

A guardian must make a list of medications his or her child has been taking by far, a list of symptoms he or she has been facing simultaneously and must also carry a brief record of one's family history. Constipation, if left unchecked, can lead to anal fissures over time.
