Burn Repair Surgery - Know Procedures Of It!

Burn Repair Surgery - Know Procedures Of It!

A burn scar on your skin does not only spoil your appearance but also hampers your self-confidence. You can undertake a plastic surgery in order to eliminate burn scars and burn marks. A burn repair surgery is an effective way to fix any previous or fresh burn scars. Although a burn scar cannot be totally eliminated, this surgery helps in improving basic functions and makes the scar less prominent or noticeable.

About Burn Repair Surgery: There are two types of burn repair surgeries. An acute burn surgery is carried out immediately after a burn injury has been inflicted. It is undertaken in a hospital by a team of surgeons who specialize in acute burn repair surgeries.

A reconstructive burn surgery is usually carried out after the initial burn scar heals. Reconstructive burn surgery aims at improving both the functional appearance and the cosmetic appearance of a burn scar. This form of burn surgery incorporates the modification of the scar tissue. The treatment procedure for scar tissues requires several months to be successful. New scar contractures may appear for a long time after an injury. Facial burn scars, which cause problems with the eyes, lips, nose and cause hair loss can be rectified. Abnormally thick, white and discolored scars can also be lightened by undergoing a burn repair surgery.

Procedure: The surgical procedure of burn repair surgery primarily involves scar release methods. After a tight scar has been released, the opening or incision made in the skin is repaired. Several techniques are applied for the purpose of closing the wounds. These include skin grafts and skin rearrangement or Z-plasty. Sometimes, more advanced flaps are required. This depends on the location of the scar and the desired results. Minor procedures are performed in the form of an outpatient surgery, but in case of larger grafts and flaps, inpatient facility is required.

After undergoing the surgery, you must follow your surgeon's care instructions properly for effective healing. This would also enable you to have a long-term effect and improved appearance of burn scars. Follow-up appointments with your surgeon after the surgery are essential.

Before deciding on undergoing a burn repair surgery, you must consult an efficient cosmetic surgeon and discuss about the surgical procedure. You should know all important facts regarding the surgery and also have an idea about the results which would be obtained. Non-surgical therapies can also be undertaken for repairing burn scars, which include scar massage, application of pressure garments and some other topical therapies.

Reconstructive Burn Surgery - When Is It Recommended?

Reconstructive Burn Surgery - When Is It Recommended?

Burn surgery is very common these days. Burn surgery is usually done on people who suffer from major burns. Reconstructive burn surgery is usually required in the last stages when the initial burns have healed to a certain extent. Usually, reconstructive burn surgeries are done on patients who have suffered from huge accidents and have burnt their face, neck and hands to a great extent. Patients requiring this surgery usually become unrecognizable after an accident.

When is reconstructive burn surgery recommended?

  1. If you have been involved in a household accident and the scars have not healed completely. Surgery might not totally heal the face, but it can improve your basic functions like breathing, smelling, seeing or tasting (if most of your senses are burnt and disfigured).
  2. Reconstructive burn surgery is also very useful for acid attack victims. Sometimes, burns are not only caused by fire, but it is also caused by chemicals and acidic substances which are worse and can completely burn and disfigure your face. When hydrochloric acid, nitric acid and sulfuric acid come in contact with your skin it seeps into the skin and burns off your nose, cartilage and sometimes even causes blindness. It disfigures your face completely, reconstructive burn surgery can do miracles, though it cannot bring back your previous features and skin texture, but it does make you look more recognizable.
  3. After a burn, facial scarring occurs which leads to the loss of eyelids, hair, nose and lips. In this case burn surgery is required.

How to take care of yourself after a burn surgery?

  1. Regular stretching should be done, especially if the areas of your burn include your hands, legs, joints, etc. Do as much as activities as possible like getting dressed and grooming yourself. It will also make you more self-reliant and give you confidence.
  2. Depression is very common after burn surgery. A reconstructive burn surgery will not magically make you look the way you used to. A lot of sittings is required and remember, appearance and looks do not matter much. The wounds will fade away with time.
  3. Itching is also very common after a burn surgery. If this problem persists, you should consult your doctor for a moisturizer.
  4. Avoid sun exposure. Don’t go out in the sun, because the U.V rays are extremely harmful and can singe your already sensitive skin; you can also get skin cancer.
  5. Custom pressure garments should be worn to protect your skin.

Injuries - How To Keep Toddlers Safe At Home?

With the word accident, the first thing that comes to our mind is a traffic accident or an outdoor accident. We all may usually relate accidents with outdoor hazards, but little do we realize that the place that we consider to be the safest, that is, our homes, has a number of hazards itself. Accidents at home are usually caused due to negligence. Children are especially prone to be hurt by such accidents. Just like we stay careful outside our home, it is also important to maintain safety indoors to prevent accidents.

Here are some of the common accidents that occur mostly to children along with the preventive steps that can help you to avoid them:

1. Fall: Falling is one of the most common accidents that children experience. There may be a number of factors such as objects scattered on the floor, the floor being slippery, unstable walking of the child, lack of supervision, etc.

  • Always keep a check on your toddler as he learns to walk
  • Do not keep babies unattended when they are sitting on a high surface
  • Keep the bed rail of the baby cot raised whenever the child is in it

Prevention:

  • Make sure that you don't hold a child and a hot object or beverage at the same time
  • Make sure that your child doesn't enter the kitchen without supervision
  • While preparing warm water for bathing your child in, always check the water temperature beforehand

4. Poisoning: Poisoning takes place under conditions of food poisoning or accidental swallowing of harmful substances like detergents, insecticides or drugs.

Prevention:

  • Keep all medicines, detergents, soaps and chemicals out of the child's reach
  • Store all chemicals and toxic substances in their respective containers or make sure the containers are labelled properly
  • Always keep a first-aid box ready at hand if you have a child at home. For severe conditions talk to a doctor or visit a hospital immediately.

5 Best Home Remedies To Treat Burn Injuries!

5 Best Home Remedies To Treat Burn Injuries!

Burn injuries are common to people working with hot metals, flames or in the kitchen. Even minor burns can be extremely painful and medication may not always be available. Home remedies can be an effective way of dealing with such minor burns immediately. Here is a look at the best home remedies for burns.

  1. Ginger: If you sustain a burn at home, go to your kitchen and grab a ginger. Cut off its end and rub the exposed surface on the burn area slowly. Ginger is very effective against burns and can be even more beneficial than aloe plants.
  2. Tea bags: Soak a tea bag and then apply it on the affected area. Before you apply the tea bag, make sure that the affected region is clean.
  3. Cold milk: If you burn your mouth when your tongue comes in contact with very hot food, the first instinct is to gulp down a glass of chilled water. However, you would be better off if you drink a glass of cold milk at such a juncture. The protein in the milk forms a layer over the burn region, thus alleviating some of the pain and providing relief.
  4. Salt water compress: When you experience a burn or any minor skin wound, a salt water compress can help. To make such a compress, add two tablespoons of salt to one tablespoon of water. Transfer this thick paste into a clean piece of cloth. Apply this cloth over the burn or wound for an hour or so.
  5. Baking soda baths: Mix baking soda in a tub of warm water. Now immerse the burnt region inside this water and rest for a few minutes. This solution is very effective against burns on the skin.

Burn Repair Surgery - How Can It Help To Reduce Deformities & Scars?

Burn Repair Surgery - How Can It Help To Reduce Deformities & Scars?

Burning your skin is a very traumatic experience and can leave behind scars that remind one of the traumatic incident. Scarring caused by burns may fade a little with time but are usually permanent. Apart from affecting your appearance severe burns can also affect the functioning of the body. Burns can make a person withdraw socially by making him or her afraid of how people will accept them with their scars as well as make them depressed about their appearance.

Burn repair surgery can be categorised under two headings: Acute and Reconstructive

  1. Acute repair surgery happens immediately after the burn and deals with large burns and deep burns that affect critical areas. The focus here is to aim for saving of life of burn patient with earliest wound healing with various surgical means.
  2. Reconstructive burn surgery addresses the deformities & scars after the initial burn wounds have healed. The goal here is to improve the appearance of the scars and ensure improvement of functioning.

There are many types of reconstructive surgeries for burns and the type of surgery best suited to a patient is based on the location of the scar, the extent of scarring and the patient’s personal goals.

  • Skin grafts: This involves the removal of healthy skin from one part of the body and transplanting it to the burn site. This split thickness skin graft include only a few outer layers of skin & full thickness graft involve the entire dermis. This is used in cases of deep burns where full thickness of dermis is affected. Also skin grafts are used for defects following release of burn contracture .
  • Flaps: These are thick skin tissues with its own blood supply, used to cover exposed vital structures like vessels , tendons, nerves, bones, etc especially in deep electrical burns of extremities.
  • Free flap procedure: In this Microvascular Surgery , muscle, bone or skin is transferred from one part of the body to another to reconstruct huge defects after contracture release or for cosmetic improvement of ugly burn scars.
  • Tissue expansion: This involves the insertion of a balloon expander under the skin near the burn scars & deformities. As the balloon is filled with saline, the skin stretches and grows. Once the skin has stretched enough, the expander is removed and the skin can then be used to replace the burn scars & deformities.

This procedure has many advantages as the skin colour and texture are a near perfect match thus reducing scarring to a large extent. However, it is a very slow procedure and can take a few months.

5 Ayurvedic Remedies To Heal Burn Injuries!

5 Ayurvedic Remedies To Heal Burn Injuries!

Your skin is the largest organ of the body that regulates body temperature, and prevents evaporation of bodily fluids to safeguard you against various infections.

Skin damage or injury resulting from burns is discomforting and traumatic. Depending on the intensity of the heat, these injuries can be minor (such as sunburn, contact burn) or can indicate a life-threatening emergency (chemical burns, fire burns, electrical burns).

Ayurveda offers five simple yet effective remedies to cure burn injuries-

  1. Aloe Vera- This works wonders for any sort of skin injury, especially skin burns. Apply the pulp of Aloe Vera on the burn injury and the surrounding area. It will soothe the burnt skin without leaving dark patches or stains.
  2. Ghee- Ghee leaves your skin with a cooling sensation. Take barks of Bargad and Pipal trees, mash them into a pulp, add them to plain ghee and apply on the burnt area. Applying medicated ghee on the burns can help heal your injury faster.
  3. Coconut oil- Coconut oil is effective for minor burn injuries. Applying coconut oil before stepping out in the sun prevents sunburn and sun tan. You can add a few drops of honey to the coconut oil, and apply the mixture on your injury. Sesame oil can also be used as an alternative to coconut oil.
  4. Sandalwood powder and turmeric- These have anti-inflammatory properties. Prepare a herbal pack using basic ingredients like powdered sandalwood, turmeric, amla, etc. These possess anti-inflammatory, antibacterial properties that heal burn scars and eases pain. You can also pour in some rose water/milk to the pack to witness better results.
  5. Cucumber- Cucumber contains nutrients and vitamins that help in healing of wounds. These are used to cure various skin ailments, including burn injuries. Extract the juice out of cucumber slices. Apply the juice on the affected area, and leave it on for a few minutes. You will soon feel a cooling sensation on the burn site.

Ayurveda also recommends certain changes in the diet to promote quick healing. The burn marks become severe when the Bhrajak Pitta residing in your skin becomes aggravated. One should therefore stick to a diet that is soothing for such injuries. Spicy, acidic foods should strictly be avoided.
