Ayurvedic Massage - Treatment, Procedure And Side Effects

What is the treatment?

Ayurvedic massage is one of the key parts of Ayurvedic therapy. Just like how a machine needs to be oiled regularly, the body would require the oil therapy for keeping its vital organs sane and healthy. Oil and herbal massages are used consistently throughout many forms of Ayurvedic massage treatments. We are in a world where we deal with stress and pressure in every walk of life. Also, the physical environment has changed drastically beyond comparison. In such a world we are battling with health issues and inflexibility almost on a daily basis. Ayurvedic massages are the best benefits one could get to keep these conditions under control. These massages are channeled throughout our body and take care a wide variety of ailments including fatigue, strengthening of the nervous system, improving eyesight, nourishing the bodily tissues, and giving flexibility to your everyday needs. The biggest positive trend of an ayurvedic massage is that it can benefit your sleep patterns and can normalize sleep. The oils used have been scientifically proven to be rejuvenating and are hugely beneficial to your body, mind, and soul. These massages have therapeutic properties inculcated within them and can be good for your overall wellbeing if channeled correctly.

How is the treatment done?

An ayurvedic massage focuses on the marmas and the chakras of your body. These are very similar to the acupressure points, and if these pressure points are manipulated correctly, they can revitalize your entire body. In simple terms, an ayurvedic massage involves the herbal oil to be poured on your body and is gradually massaged by the ayurvedic expert or the doctor. However, this is not just as easy as it sounds as the masseur would be required to know the vital points in the body and to channel the massage and to focus on the correct pressure. During an Ayurvedic massage, your room may be filled with music that is both enchanting and soothing for your body, and this alleviates the experience on the whole. The room would also be filled with an aroma of soothing fragrances to rejuvenate the sense of smell. While doing the massage, the expert massage therapist will also be reciting mantras within himself to promote the positive energy levels. Ayurveda massage is not just a treatment. It is an experience on its own. More than the body it aims to rejuvenate your mind and which in turn channels the positivity throughout the body. Many people who have undergone these treatments have felt better and are often known to be saying that they have discovered themselves.

Who is eligible for the treatment? (When is the treatment done?)

Everyone can be an eligible candidate for the ayurvedic massages. They are one of the safest forms of treatment available and do not cause any side effects on its own. However pregnant women can avoid it as the pressure can be disturbing to them. Also, people who are above the age group of 75 can try for these treatments partially as the herbs and oils used may not accept to their body condition. It is safe to get the consultation of an ayurvedic expert before you go for these treatments.

Who is not eligible for the treatment?

Ayurvedic massages are extremely safe and can be had by anyone. Pregnant women and people who are older than 75 years of age can avoid it. Also while undergoing these treatments make sure that you are not suffering from any other medical conditions like cold or fever as the oil used may aggravate the situation.

Are there any side effects?

No, there are no known side effects due to this treatment. After the treatment, you might feel a slight chill or slight increase in the body temperature. This is your body’s fundamental and natural way of removing the toxins, and usually, these symptoms go away on their own. Ayurvedic massages are extremely safe and can be used by anyone. However, ensure that you get these treatments only by professional ayurvedic doctors and therapist and go for the reputed clinic.

What are the post-treatment guidelines?

Post the treatment you might be given an herbal bath and after which a regular bath might be provided. This is offered to remove the oil extracts that might have stuck to your body. After which, you can get back to your regular work. Wear fresh and loose clothes after the treatment so that the freshness is maintained. You might be asked to follow a specific diet or certain lifestyle changes for the treatments to be a success.

How long does it take to recover?

There is no recovery period involved. You can get back to your routine once the treatment is over. If there are multiple sessions required, make sure that you undergo them religiously as the best effects of the treatment can be felt as a whole.

What is the price of the treatment in India?

A full body ayurvedic massage can start from about 1,000 INR and can go up depending on the types of oil used. Some of the oils used are very rare and can be done only on an individual’s need. In such scenarios, the cost can go up.

Are the results of the treatment permanent?

No, the results are not permanent. In the times we live in, there are too many external factors that control the productivity of your body. Hence it is best to have these treatments regularly for getting a rejuvenating experience. For best results, you can have these treatments once in three months. Ensure that you get these treatments only from reputed ayurvedic centers. Always look for the credentials of the ayurvedic doctor before undergoing the treatment.

What are the alternatives to the treatment?

There are many alternative treatments to the massages such as the Panchakarma treatments and herbal baths. These procedures are extremely similar to the Ayurvedic massages and can use the same or similar types of oil.

Massaging - Reasons Why It Is Best For Your Baby!

Are you looking for ways to relax with your baby and bond with him/her well? Then giving him/her a massage every day can be the best way to ensure normal growth and development of the infant along with nurturing him/her. Everyone is aware of the fact that massaging is an important way to bond with the newborns but there is even more that a soothing massage can do. It goes beyond the generic inventory of systemic strokes and has been proved a necessary component for the overall improvement of the baby. Ayurvedic massage is an Indian system of medicine which is concerned about the holistic healing of human beings and is over 5000 years old.
Regardless of whether your baby is a just a month old or several years, an Ayurvedic massage can help in engaging with the baby mindfully and connecting with him/her in non-verbal ways along with proffering several other benefits that include:

  1. Improvement of sleep: In a study conducted at the Touch Research Institutes of the Miami School of Medicine, it was found that babies and toddlers who were massaged for 15 minutes prior to sleep received good sleep and showe less sleep delays as opposed to toddlers and infants who were told a story before going to sleep. Ayurvedic massage with almond or coconut oil aids the child in sleeping deeply and more soundly and needless to say that the parents would sleep better if the child is sleeping soundly.
  2. Stimulation of growth hormone: Numerous underweight babies are born in the hospital each day resulting in longer hospital stays and increasing medical expenses. But many pieces of research have proved that if underweight babies are massaged for 15 minutes about 3 to 4 times a day, it could result in 47 percent more weight gain and they could leave the hospitals about 6 days earlier than others who were not massaged. If a baby can be discharged from the hospital almost a week earlier, it could lead to significant amount of savings without compromising the health of the child, and not to mention its emotional benefits on the parents.
  3. Boosting the function of the gastrointestinal tract: Constipation, gas, and colic are the three main physical distress that all babies do go through no matter how healthy they are. It is also very disturbing for the new parents who are not able to understand how to calm the baby. But the good news is that easy to learn massage techniques can aid in moving along digestion and the gas that is creating discomfort for the child. It could yield significant results in just a few minutes of massaging with mustard oil. There are some families where there is a tradition of using ghee for massaging babies.
  4. Relieving the pain and stress of teething: Teething is one of the most difficult times for both the infant and the parents but fortunately, there is a special facial massaging technique that can boost the release of endorphins which are the natural pain reliever in the human body. It also aids in lowering the levels of cortisol in the baby so that the stress levels are decreased along with the pain of teething.

Thus, you should massage your baby every day in order to help him grow happily while establishing a strong bond with him until he becomes 2 years old. You may also consult an Ayurvedic expert who can educate you on the correct method of massaging your child. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

How Does Ayurvedic Massage Help To Your Body?

Ayurveda translates to study of life and is one of oldest medicine systems in the world. It works by treating the body as a whole system and gets to the problem. It believes that good health is a result of the balance between the 3 body elements Vata, pitta and kapha. The imbalance between these three cause disease and treatment should be aimed at restoring this balance.

Oils are one of the widely used Ayurvedic remedies, and there are multiple benefits of an Ayurvedic oil massage. Therapists would recommend this to be a daily routine for overall well-being. While pain relief is an obvious benefit, read on to know some of the lesser known benefits of an oil massage.

On a regular basis, there is stress and toxins that are accumulated in the body. A good massage dissolves these toxins and rejuvenates and recharges the body. The body and the mind are relaxed and soothed.
The physical motions of an oil massage improve circulation to all parts of the body. The overall sensation is improved.

  1. Internal organs are stimulated, thereby their efficiency is improved.
  2. The oil per se provides good lubrication for the joints, thereby, enabling smoother joint and bone movement
  3. The muscles are toned, and with the improved circulation and nerve ending stimulation, the muscles are toned
  4. The nerve endings are stimulated, and the nerves are calmed. This is responsible for the calming effect after a massage.
  5. The stimulated nerve endings also improve the mental alertness and increase the overall physical stamina of a person.
  6. The body’s ability to eliminate toxins is improved, thereby leaving behind a cleaner overall system (skin, kidneys, and intestines).
  7. A lot of waste and toxins are removed from the skin, thereby leaving the skin softer and smoother. The oils used also seep in through the skin, nourishing the underlying layers of the skin. This also contributes to the glowing, youthful appearance.
  8. The massage relaxes the body physically and mentally. The overall result is also a deeper, refreshing sleep pattern for the person.
  9. Massaging the naval area in a clockwise direction and foot massage may seem far connected to vision, but these are actually proven areas that affect vision. Massaging these areas is shown to be beneficial for vision.
  10. The lymphatic system is also revitalised by improving lymphatic drainage. Excess toxins from the body are removed, leaving the overall body in a healthy and recharged state.
  11. Regular massage removes free radicals from the body, thereby, reducing overall levels of general inflammation. This reduces ageing effects (both internally and externally). The result is a younger, rejuvenated appearance.

If you had any doubts about whether you should go for an oil massage, don’t think, indulge yourself!

Ayurvedic Approach
Hello, my name is Dr Prashant Das from Dr Monga s Health World and today in our series, Hello Doctor , we will be talking about Ayurveda and many other things related to Ayurveda. And, I ll be interacting with Dr Jyoti of Dr Monga Clinic.

Dr Jyoti- Hello, Good morning, I m Dr Jyoti, so we can start with the questions?

Dr Prashant Das- Thank you, Dr Jyoti. So my first question to you is what exactly is Ayurveda?

Dr Jyoti- Okay, so, everybody has listened the term ayurveda . So Ayurveda if we split into two words, it s ayur and veda . Ayur means life and veda means science. So when we enter the college, the first sloka that we learn or we are taught is Hita hitam sukham dukham ayus tasya hitahitam mana ch tachha yatrokatam Ayurveda sa uchyate . Iska matlab hai, hitkar ahitkar sukhkar dukhkar ayu hai, aur iske ahit aur hit ke baare mein jo humein gyaan deta hai, usse ayurveda kahan jata hai. So I think you would be able to understand that it is the science in which we learn how to lead a healthy life and how we can get rid of the diseases.

Dr Prashant Das- And my next question to you is why Ayurveda is not the first or primary option for a common man? When he is facing some problem and he goes to a doctor, why Ayurveda is not his first choice?

Dr Jyoti- It s very unfortunate actually. Ayurveda having its origins from India, people don t believe that it is their own pathy, they don t trust it. There are a lot of causes, lot of reasons why this is emerging as it. People are not trusting ayurveda as they are trusting the other pathies. So, first of all, is the ayurvedic doctors, you know they themselves do not have the confidence that they can treat people with ayurveda. They actually practice modern pathy, they do not know that there is hardly anything which they cannot treat with ayurveda. Secondly, you know, is the quacks. Quackery is a very very very big issue, you know. Aap jab jaate hai raste pe tab bahut saare aapko tent lagaye huye nazar aate hai, jispe aap dekhte hai, ayurveda dwara ilaj kijiye , ek jhole wala baba betha hota hai aur unhone 10-15 jars mein jo hai who aapke ayurvedic oshadhiya rakhi hui hai. Toh, people think that shayad yahi ayurveda hai, sorry, it is not ayurveda. And one very important thing, people think that drinking amla juice every day, drinking aloe vera, going vegetarian, and practising yoga is ayurveda. It is a part of ayurveda, but it is not complete ayurveda. People actually don t know what wonders this pathy can do.

Dr Prashant Das- Okay, so that leads me to the next question. We have been hearing about Dr Monga Clinic and we have a punch line also, that we practice ethical ayurveda . What is the difference between a normal ayurveda practice and an ethical Ayurveda practice?

Dr Jyoti- You know, Mr Prashant, at Dr Monga s Health World, our main motive is to develop faith in our ayurvedic pathy, means our ayurvedic medicine. We are doing our level best so we can make people understand that Ayurveda can do wonders, you know. But when we enter the college, we are taught, sabse pehle aapko kya karna chahiye? Hetu, hetu means karan ko dhundiye. So until and unless you have a detailed word with your patient ki why you are having this problem, what is the diet, what is the lifestyle because there are so many so many things that are adding to the present condition of the patient. Thik hai, there are physiological diseases also, but they are getting worsened by your diet and lifestyle. So here at Dr Monga Clinic, we tell the patients to follow a healthy diet and lifestyle, to make changes in the diet and lifestyle, so that they can have the ultimate good health.

Dr Prashant Das- A related question to the answer that you have just given, I would like to ask you how can a patient when he comes to an ayurvedic doctor and he gets prescribed for his disease or an illness, how can he derive the maximum benefits from the goodness of ayurveda?

Dr Jyoti-Very good question, actually. Actually, the best thing that a patient can get after having an ayurvedic treatment is that first of all, he or she should follow the do s and don t s very properly. Finally, when a person comes to an ayurvedic doctor, woh sab jagah ghumke aata hai. The stage is at such a chronic point that you cannot expect wonders. It will take its time. So, first of all, they need to be patient, they need to follow the do s and don t s properly so that they can achieve the best out of the ayurvedic treatment.

Thank you so much doctor and this brings to the first conclusion of the first episode of Hello Doctor , we ll see you again, until then, take care and have a healthy life.

Thank you so much.

Ayurveda Treatment
Hello Friends, Welcome to Lybrate India Youtube Channel. I am Dr Suneet V Shende, MD in Ayurved, practising Ayurveda and Panchakarma. We have two clinics in Navi Mumbai.

Today we will be discussing the topic of Ayurveda for wellness. We repeatedly discuss how Prevention is better than Cure .

But What exactly is Prevention? Very few of us are aware of that. Nowadays It has become a fashion to do preventive health check-ups through blood tests and other parameters. But a few blood tests and these parameters can not complete your preventive care. It may give an idea of your pathological condition but it may not give a complete idea of your physiological and mental health. Our 5000 years old ancient science gives an idea of preventive care.

Ayurveda, literally, means Life Science; Ayur meaning Life and Veda means Science. It gives a detailed idea on how to do things and spend your life on a day to day basis. There is a popular saying in Ayurveda that goes like Swasthasya se Swasthya Rakshanam, Aturasya vikar prashamanamcha . It means to take care of the healthy individual and also to take care of the diseased person by all preventive measures as is the aim of Ayurveda. How diseases are formed or how disturbances in health occur is also described in the ancient text in a beautiful manner. Ayurveda says that in a particular condition or at a particular time if a person is doing things in a proportionate or disproportionate manner then that is responsible for the wellness or illness. To get good health or wellness, we need to follow this principle.

We are mostly living in a 9-6 time for our daily routine. If we follow our daily routines in a proportionate manner, for example, intake of healthy food, regular exercise or yoga, follow proper sleep schedule, and if we spare time for family and social well being, then we can definitely achieve the health goal and can get supreme health. This may not happen due to sedentary lifestyles. We do not follow a proper diet, no proper sleep hours, no proper time devoted to regular exercise and yoga, resulting in individuals suffering from health problems at an early age. As early as twenty to twenty-five, many individuals are suffering from health problems. For examples, several young girls are having period issues and many young boys have joint pains or general weakness problem at a young age due to the sedentary lifestyle.

How to get rid of these problems and how to stay healthy by taking preventive measures?

Wellness is a lifelong path and is different for different persons and individuals. Ayurveda helps you to achieve your wellness journey through its basic principles. One cannot achieve the health goals without doing the detoxification because the toxics are responsible for the disease or illness. For detoxification, the Ayurveda Panchakarma procedure will support you in recovering from the illness, for getting relaxation from stress, and for getting rejuvenation from weakness. The Panchakarma, as the name suggests, is the process of five procedures which is the detoxification process in Ayurveda. As our body is formed by Panch Mahabhutas and Tri Doshas , Panchakarma procedure also works on the same principle. Panchakarma include the five main procedures and there are some sub processes.

First procedure is the Vamana Karma , the scientific MSS process for tougher disorders or detoxification from the cougher disorder.
Second is the Virechana process, which is the scientific purgation process for the aggravated pitas disorder and the detoxification process for the pitah doshas .
The third one is Basti process which is the enema by the medicated oil or decoction. It is the detoxification process for the Vata Doshas.
Other Panchkarmas are the Rakt Mokshana and Nase, and also includes Netre Darpan, Shirodhara, Sanik Basti which also helps to achieve our wellness goals.
One can achieve wellness by doing following these procedures regularly or as per the advise of the Ayurveda physician. One can do this at any authentic Ayurveda centre or at our centres as well.

Myths about Ayurveda
Myths, fact and treatment by Ayurveda

Hello, Namaste. Mai Dr. Richa Sharma. Faridabad mein mere Ayurveda centre me Ayurveda chikitsa karti hun. Mera Panchakarma Centre hai. Lekin aisa nahi hai. Mai iss madhyam k zariye sabhi ko batana chahti hun ki ayurveda ek 5000 saal purana, shayad usse bhi purana science hai aur bohot hi trusted aur tested science hai. Har level pe jancha aur parkha gaya hai. Isiliye aaj bhi jo 5000 saal pehle iske bhi jo mul sidhant the, jis tarah se khade the usi tarah se aaj k samay me bhi ajise humara khaan paan, rehen sehen sab badal gaya hai.

Aaj k samay mein bhi wo utne hi khade hai. To Ayureda k baare me hum kahe to uska jo naam hai Ayurveda, Ayu aur Veda. 2 shabde mila kar banaya gaya hai Ayurveda shabd. Ayu matlab life aur Veda ka matlab science. To jisme jeewan ka science hai, humare liye sahi kya hai, humare swasthya k liye sahi kya hai galat kya hai iska warnan diya gaya hai. Iske baad mein phir chikitsa k baare me bataya gaya hai aur yaha tak ki mansik rog na ho isliye ek sadwrut naam ka heading diya hai ek chapter hai jisme humara social behaviour kaisa hona chahiye, logon k saath humara behaviour kaisa hona chahiye iske baare mein jankari diya gaya hai. To kul milakar Ayurveda mein ek holistic approach tha k aap sharirik aur mansik roop se kaise swasthya reh sakte hai.

Ayurveda mein jo Panchakarma k baare me kuch aapko kehna chahungi. Panchakarma Ayurveda ka ek bhinna ang hai. Panchkarma yaani paanch kaam jaise naam se suggest hota hai. 5 karma jo ki sharir shuddhi ki kriyayen hai. Iska kaam sharir ki suddhi karna bhi hai aur saath me therapeutic use bhi hai, chikitsak use bhi hai iska. Swasthya wyakti bhi Panchkarma kara sakte hai jaise ki agar aap sharir suddhi karate hai, detoxification karte hai. Humare roz marra k jewan mein metabolism k karan jo toxics jama hote hai use bahar nikalne me madad karta hai.

Detoxification karne se immunity badhti hai, immunity badhne se rog hone ki sambhawnaye kam hoti hai, metabolic disorders kam hote hai. Saath hi agar jo rog hote bhi hai to uski tiwrata kam hoti hai, mild form me rog hote hai. Yehi Panchkarma agar rogi ko diya jai to rog ka jo mul karan Ayurveda me kaha gaya hai tridosha. Tridosha ka jab balance bigadta hai watwitkaf ka tabhi rog hote hai. To in Tridosho ko zyada badhe huye dosho ko sharir se bahar nikala jaata hai Panchakarma k dwara. Iske baad me jo dawaiya di jaati hai wo kam matra me di jaati hai aur zyada asar karti hai kyuki sharir shudh ho chuka hota hai aapka. Saath hi rog k dubara se wapas aane ki sambhawna kam ho jaati hai, jo ki reaction hota hai kisi bhi disease ka wo kam ho jaati hai. To iss tarah se Panchkarma humare jewan k liye bohot hi upyogi aur swasthya rakhne k liye zaruri chiz hai.
Panchkarma 5 prakar ki hoti hai, pehla vamana hai, vamana ka matlab hai hum induce karte hai vomiting jisme ki alag alag kaadhe diye jaate hai, pilaye jaate hai aur jo naabhi k upar ka part hai cough k liye hum vamana treatment ko prefer karte hai. Thyroid hai, motapa hai, cholestrol badha hua hai, dimag k rog hai uske liye vamana bohot upyogi saabit hota hai. Dusra Virechana hai, Virechana matlab induced purgation jisme ki medicines k dwara dast hum patients ko lagwate hai aur sharir ki gandagi bahar nikalte hai gudam marg k dwara. In nabhi k niche k rog, pittak k rog, twacha k rog, rakth k rog, isme bohot upyogi hota hai. Motape me bhi Virechana chikitsa bohot accha kaam karti hai. Teesra hai Basti Chikitsa. Basti Chikita ko Ayurveda k medicine vibhag me aadhi chikitsa kahi gayi hai.
