I am vegetarian .I got memory loss. As per alopathic doctor's version my memory is comparably old age person memory. Due to work pressure I take 1strip of anxit 0.5 mg.Now I won't take this tablet. What is the ayurvedic medicine available in market for my memory loss.

MBBS, MD (AIIMS, Gold Medalist), Diploma in CBT (UWS, Glasgow)
Psychiatrist, Delhi
I suggest you get a vitamin b12 level test done. Vegetarians are often deficient in this vitamin which directly influences memory. If that is normal, then we might want to evaluate you or anxiety disorder. I assume that thyroid functions and hemoglobin have been done earlier and are normal.

How the Brain Can Hear Voices That Don't Exist

BASM, MD, MS (Counseling & Psychotherapy), MSc - Psychology, Certificate in Clinical psychology of children and Young People, Certificate in Psychological First Aid, Certificate in Positive Psychology
Psychologist, Palakkad
How the Brain Can Hear Voices That Don't Exist
Schizophrenic individuals who experience auditory hallucinations seem to hear voices (link is external) emanating from within their own skulls. These voices are often vulgar or derogatory; they may constantly criticize one’s actions or command the listener to commit destructive acts, such as self-harm or violence. Sometimes, hallucinations consist of not voices but sounds—whispers, growls, or screeching.

So what is going wrong in a brain that hears noises that others don’t?

Interestingly enough, the same brain areas that activate when people hear real noise also light up in schizophrenics during hallucinatory episodes. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans, several studies have found increased activation in Broca’s area (link is external) (a language processing region) and in the primary auditory cortex (link is external) in schizophrenics as they “hear” voices that aren’t real.

But more answers lead to more questions. In this case, why are there abnormal activation of auditory- and speech-related brain regions in the absence of sound?

It may have something to do with brain structure: That tiny part of the brain that is so critical to processing auditory information in humans, the primary auditory cortex, is often smaller in schizophrenic individuals. Across multiple fMRI studies (link is external), researchers have found that reduced volume of the anterior superior temporal gyrus (which contains part of the auditory cortex) in schizophrenics is correlated with increased severity of hallucinatory episodes.

Another structural deficit found in schizophrenics is a weak connection between certain brain regions, specifically between the frontal and temporal lobes. This means that “certain groups of neurons, such as those responsible for producing and receiving language, may begin to function autonomously, beyond the control or influence of other brain systems,” writes Ralph Hoffman (link is external), a professor of psychiatry at Yale University. “It is as if the string section of the orchestra suddenly decided to play its own music, disregarding everyone else.”

Branislava Curic-Blake and colleagues (link is external) (2013) investigated this idea by scanning schizophrenic patients as they performed a task requiring inner speech processing: Subjects were shown two-syllable words on a screen and had to indicate whether the stress was located on the first or second syllable by pressing a button. In order to complete the task, subjects sounded out the words in their heads—effectively activating both inner speech production and language perception regions, according to a previous fMRI study. (link is external) The researchers found that subjects with a history of hallucinations demonstrated reduced connectivity from Wernicke’s area (language processing) to Broca’s area (speech production) relative to the control group.

This disconnect may explain the brain’s confusion of internally generated thoughts with external voices. Hoffman proposes that hyperactivity in the left frontal lobe combined with a weakened connection may lead to Broca’s area “dumping” language into Wernicke’s area—a part of the brain that normally receives speech information from the outside. A passing thought may be experienced as a whisper in one’s ear.

To test this theory, Hoffman and colleagues (link is external) have experimented with transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), a noninvasive method that can inhibit small regions of the brain by producing light electric currents—in this case, reducing the hyperactivity of Broca’s area and portions of the temporal lobe. Although results are preliminary, most patients treated with TMS seem to experience relief from their auditory hallucinations, with improvements lasting anywhere from two months to a year. If validated in larger-scale studies, TMS could become an alternative treatment option.

Schizophrenia is a highly stigmatized illness (link is external). Most of us don’t understand hallucinations or delusions—and we are scared of what we don’t understand. We associate “hearing voices” with insanity. But the sounds that schizophrenic people hear are just as real to them as the sound of your child chattering about her day or the car beeping outside. And for them, the noise doesn’t stop.

Once we recognize the neural basis of schizophrenia, we become more compassionate. We begin to grasp the helplessness and confusion that schizophrenic individuals face as they deal with symptoms they have no control over—voices, paranoia, disorganized speech, apathy. And we can take more steps toward supporting those afflicted with this debilitating disease. Burke, who is vice president of the nonprofit group Stigma Fighters (link is external), says the stigma surrounding schizophrenia is particularly demoralizing. “As soon as something terrible happens in the news, that’s the first thing people point to, saying ‘They probably had voices that told them to do it,’” she explains.

“But the truth is, the majority of us are not violent people at all. Giving people with mental illness a voice is the most important thing. Getting us to speak up will create change.”

Dear Lybrate user, Anxiety disorders are a category of mental disorders characterized by feelings of anxiety and fear, where anxiety is a worry about future events and fear is a reaction to current events. These feelings may cause physical symptoms, such as a racing heart and shakiness. There are a number of anxiety disorders: including generalized anxiety disorder, a specific phobia, social anxiety disorder, separation anxiety disorder, agoraphobia, and panic disorder among others. While each has its own characteristics and symptoms, they all include symptoms of anxiety. I need to know more about your anxiety so that I will be able to diagnose it properly and provide you tips to overcome and manage your anxiety. Take care.

If you are an occasional smoker - with public messages, health awareness programs and your own doctors advice, you can quit. If you are a regular smoker, motivational therapy with a trained psychotherapist or a psychiatrist and enormous will power will help you quit. If you are a diseased smoker, consult a de addiction psychiatrist at the earliest. He may give you anti-smoking medications and de addiction treatment.

You can chew nicorette gum which is nicotine replacement.

Shivering is a part of physiological manifestation of anxiety. It can just be a normal trait which if is an isolated presentation may not actually require treatment. However, given that you have had multiple such attacks, it may indicate towards an anxiety condition of which there are many. For a proper treatment, the trigger for anxiety, frequency, type of clinical presentation, associated medical conditions etc need to be identified and keeping all these things in consideration, then a suitable form of treatment has to be decided which can be just a simple relaxation technique or a behavioral intervention, CBT technique or psychopharmacological intervention or a combination of some of these. Best call for you would be not to diagnose the issue by yourself which several people try to do and instead visit a qualified psychiatrist. Mostly a proper treatment will relieve you of your symptoms. Wish you all the best.

Dear Lybrate User, Schizophrenia is not curable. It can be managed with medicines and psychotherapy. Please check with your Psychiatrist and start Counselling/Psychotherapy for her. I understand that, as a mother you are very worried about your daughter and at your age you want someone, who would look after her, for the rest of her life. You need to see, if she would be able to be a good life partner to someone. Marrying her off, would not solve her problems. There are a few institutions which may help you in this situation. Please talk to the Psychiatrist about this. Since the Psychiatrist is treating your daughter for last 20 years, he/she will be able to find a good institution for you which will suit your needs. Take care.

How should I increase my concentration regarding my studiea? I am not able to concentrate on a particular thing and espacially my subjects.

Dear, concentration, attention span and interest. Know them. If you are able to watch an interesting movie for two hours, if you are able to play a game for one hour, you have concentration and good attention span. No question or no organic problems. Then the problem is with your attention span. If you are unable to be attentive in your subjects, then it is because you have no interest in your studies. You have to cultivate interest. Effective learning methods should help you. Take care.

In a relationship both partners need to have mutual respect, communication and understanding of each other. If any of these components are missing, relationship would suffer. Its important to understand each other as individual selves and giving personal space and freedom, otherwise conflicts are likely to arise from both sides. To discuss each other needs and what is it that needs to work upon in a relation is another significant requirement. For this, consult a clinical psychologist or a couple therapist who can understand the problem in detail.

Hello Sahil Bansal first start overcoming from depression “ I feel ‘trapped’ inside the negative thoughts and have 0 motivation for anything. It’s an effort to do anything and I really fear that I will never be normal. “ This is a descriptive symptom of depression. And so is the fear that you are feeling. These things will be greatly diminished or even disappear if and when you receive treatment for what is making you sick. Normal lives are ONLY EVER led by people who recognize when they are sick and do something about it. If they break a leg, they go to the doctor to get help. If it is a bad break, then they ask for the best treatment they can get. Your life is definitely worth this much effort. You have a chemical imbalance in your brain that makes you feel really bad. You feel as though your hands are tied. BUT THEY ARE NOT. You must ignore how you feel, and do what I say to you, and that you now know is correct: Get help, recieve the best treatment and get better. It is so much easier and so much better to get help now than it was even just 10 years ago. So much more is understood. Be the smart person I believe you are. Find a doctor and tell them what you have said to me. You definitely CAN feel better by DOING this. follow these steps for overcoming from depression............. The reason you are having a lot of negative thoughts is because your mind is idle. The reason your mind is idle is because you don't have energy to do anything. The reason you don't have energy to do anything is because you are channeling the bulk of your energy into suppressing your emotions, as a result of your negative thoughts. Negative thoughts -> negative emotions -> use energy to suppress emotions -> no energy to do anything else -> mind is idle -> more negative thoughts The fear that you will not be normal is one such negative thought. It's all connected, but it can be hard to see when you're in the thick of it. It's all one big haze, one neverending cloud of darkness. The first thing to realise is that you cannot trust your own thoughts. That's scary, I know. But when you're in the midst of a depressive episode, you cannot trust your own mind. That means some of the things that your mind thinks are real, some are not, and you are unable to differentiate which is which. In such times when you can't even trust your own mind, who can you trust? your parents your spouse your best friend your therapist Pick one or two, and trust that person’s words over your own, against your better judgement because during these times, your judgement is impaired. The second thing to do is to reduce the number of thoughts that come to mind. Remember, the reason you have so many is because your mind is idle. Give your mind something to do. I highly encourage going out into the sun and doing some vigorous exercise. Sunlight and exercise and great ways to lift the cloud of darkness around you, for physiological reasons. You may feel like you don't have energy. This is a negative thought your mind feeds you with and it is lying to you. You have in you to do it. Once you give your idle mind something to do, it will produce fewer negative thoughts. This creates fewer negative emotions, and you will channel less energy towards suppressing them. This frees up more energy for you. Use this to see a therapist. Learn new skills, such as how to manage your emotions better. Third, learn what are the triggers that cause a depressive episode to occur and avoid them. Depression is a sign that the way you've been living your life thus far isn't working. Hence, you need to change some things in your life. Start with your triggers. They are the most obvious signs. To recap: ONE: Realise you can't trust your own mind. Find someone you can trust. TWO: Reduce the number of negative thoughts by giving your mind something to do. Vigorous exercise highly encouraged. THREE: Learn what triggers your depressive episodes. Remember, depression is a self-defense mechanism telling you that the way you've been living your life isn't working. To get out of depression requires a lifestyle change. Don't be under the illusion that this will be a simple change of sleeping time. Likely there are multiple factors that have contributed to your depression. You may have to change your job, your diet, your sleeping habits, your exercise routine, your religion, and/or the people you hang out with. Step by step. Bit by bit. You'll be a new person at the end of this. A better person. thank you all the best

Dear user, You must be able to understand Concentration, attention span, recollection and distraction. If you are able to watch a movie for two hours continuously, if you are able to play a game for an hour, then you do not have any concentration problems. You can't be attentive towards your studies because you are not interested in it. You are able to watch movie and play game because you are interested in it. Human cannot be attentive towards anything for more than 10 minutes. Then you should study in such a way that your attention is continued and make the subjects are interesting to you. Effective learning techniques should help you. Recollection depends on anxiety, stress and other physical and circumstantial factors. Distractions while studying are plentiful. You should be able to overcome distractions or avoid distractions. Please understand the above. Change your study style and attitude accordingly. Please post a private question to me and I will help you with "effective learning" techniques. Avocados, Beetroots, Blueberries, Broccoli. Celery, Coconut Oil, Dark Chocolate etc are good for improving concentration. Take care.

Dear lybrate-user, it is good that you wants stop smoking, we are destroying our health by smoking normal human takes oxygen into lungs 12 -15 times per minute (12 - 15 breaths) lungs mixes oxygen in blood and it purifies our blood, by smoking we are mixing not only oxygen adding and mixing bad elements like nicotine etc. In oxygen, that spoils our blood and our body all organs like lungs, heart, kidney etc. In our body. How to quit: by willingness and willpower" where there is a will there is a way" reduce one by one day by day.
