Throat cancer - Symptoms to watch for!

Throat cancer - Symptoms to watch for!

Throat cancer is a broad term used to cover cancer across a number of organs in the oronasal passage – right from the nasopharynx, oropharynx, glottis, epiglottis to supraglottis. Minus the medical terms, it means anywhere from the back of the nose and throat to the where the neck ends. The mucous cells along this path can undergo changes and begin multiplying rapidly, leading to cancer. The following are some additional risk factors:

Cigarette smoking is the most important of all, and a person can significantly reduce the risk by cutting down smoking. The throat has different types of linings and gland tissue, and depending on the cell type affected, the type of cancer could vary.

Symptoms: Throat cancer diagnosis can get delayed as the symptoms are very similar to a throat infection.

  1. Sore throat: A sore throat that lasts for weeks together is often a cause for concern and requires ruling out underlying serious problem. Having associated risk factors is a good way to see if ruling out cancer is needed.
  2. Cough: A cough that does not go away is a cause for concern. This is often associated with other symptoms mentioned here.
  3. Voice change: Usually hoarseness of the voice, which is painless and not accompanied by a throat infection, is an indication of throat cancer.
  4. Difficulty swallowing or breathing: Depending on where the cancer is located, there could be problems in either free breathing or swallowing. The developing mass gets in the way of free air and/or food movement.
  5. Lumpy feeling in the throat: If the developing mass is along the length of the throat, then there could be a lumpy feeling, as if something is caught in the throat and not going down.
  6. Bleeding: There could be bleeding either through the nose or the mouth, depending on the place of the cancer. Again, this is one of the late symptoms and not seen in the beginning.
  7. Unexplained weight loss: As with any cancer, throat cancer also leads to unexplained weight loss.

Depending on the area affected, the symptoms can point to the location. For instance, voice changes are often associated with laryngeal cancer. A combination of risk factor assessment and symptoms will help in pinning down the diagnosis. Reach out to the doctor as soon as you notice something is wrong, as early diagnosis is very good for timely intervention and improving prognosis. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Sir, How much tym does nasal polyps takes to regrow after operated. Does it have permanent cure?

MBBS, MS ENT
ENT Specialist,
Sir,
How much tym does nasal polyps takes to regrow after operated. Does it have permanent cure?
It depends upon the etiology. If the polyps are fungal in origin, then chance of recurrence is high. Also in a country like India where dust and pollution is everywhere, curing polyps is very difficult cos the patient goes back to the same environment after surgery. I have had many patients who never had recurrence after they settled in Europe or America. Middle East and Asia are hot and dusty which is perfect for polyps. Plus genetic factors like allergy, asthma, etc also increase recurrence. Polyps and allergy/asthma go hand in hand. Has any physician promised you a cure for asthma? The same goes for polyps. We can remove them by surgery and prescribe inhalers to prevent them from growing back. If you take 100 patients, polyps tend to grow back in 30 who require resurgery. 60 pts have small polyps but have good control of symptoms in whom we treat medically. 10 patients are totally symptom free and have no polyps.

Start pinching the nose and then slowly lifted. Regularly every day for 4-5 minutes so that only the most pointed and sharp nose. • How sharp nose course others use essential oils like lavender or jasmine and massage the tip to the base near the eye. Be careful not to hit oil from your beautiful eyes. • Place the middle finger in the corner of the eye and place the ring finger right under, massage gently until you feel the muscle is the nose. Do it with relaxed for 8-10 times a day. • Yoga can be a way to make sharp nose naturally through breathing exercises correctly. With yoga, breathing techniques, aquiline nose look without realizing it. The trick, sitting upright, then use your right thumb to close the right nostril. Hi lybrate-user this is frequently a problem when fluids accumulate on the middle ear (the part behind your ear drum) smokers are inclined to have poor mucociliary clearance which can cause this problem.

It takes time as what treatment you are taking is right till now as per your test reports, tinnitus and vertigo is very common these days in any age group due to excess of noise exposure and damage to inner ear, humming sound, whistling and giddiness are the problems which are getting in people are very common these days, these get complicated when they are not taken care of at proper time whistling or buzzing in the ear is getting commoner these days in people of all ages. Most common causes is wax or any object in the ear, after getting your ears clean these gets over. But if ears are already clean than this is worrisome. Common causes which are responsible are high cholesterol diet, alcohol, smoking, loud noises, cervical spondylosis, trauma (self or inflicted) over the ears. If this is the situation than report to your ent doctor immediately tinnitus is basically due to hampered blood supply to ears due to which ears start dying. As this process starts a person starts hearing noises. When a person starts hearing noises then it is already late diagnosis as these noises gets heard by someone when they are of 40 db intensity, below that threshold these noises are not heard. So it is already to late and the damage has become permanent. Problem with these noises are that we can control at what level person goes to his specialist otherwise these noises keep on increasing and can give you headache frustration and depression.

Firstly you need to find out the cause of bleeding from nose. There are various minor to major causes of bleeding from nose. So accordingly we can plan further line of treatment. Food has no relation with bleeding from nose.

I am suffering from severe throat infection, cold and cough pls suggest medicine. Thanks.
Advice - drink plenty of fluids, consume raw ginger and honey, gargle with salt water, avoid spicy and oily food, eat vegetables, soups and blend diet for 3-4 days. Stodal syrup sbl - 3 times a day, allium cepa 30, 3 times a day, dulcamara - 30, 3 times a day before meal. All are temporary treatment as per provided information, for permanent cure we need detail history and investigations. Homeopathy is best, safe and effective. We treated every day 50+ patients of cough and coryza, in this weather its common. And our success rate is 90% approx.
