Dear Sir/Mam, My child is 2 and half month old, he is schedule for the vaccination. I am not getting IPV separately, Private doctors are claiming to provide EASY SiX vaccine which covers IPV also, but they are charging me 4300 for the same which I didn't find trustworthy. Can I give him normal OPV. DTwp and HIB or shall I pay them for this.

Dear Sir/Mam, My child is 2 and half month old, he is schedule for the vaccination. I am not getting IPV separately, ...
In the past polio eradication era, IPV is better than OPV. If you have financial issues, go to any government hospital where you can get pentavalent vaccine free of cost for your child.

My son is 3 years old, he doesn't eat anything, we use hungry syrup, but no change, we are worrying about him, please give me a best suggestion for him, and one more thing he is always crying, what is the reason for crying?

My son is 3 years old, he doesn't eat anything, we use hungry syrup, but no change, we are worrying about him, please...
It seems the problem is 1) food or feeding is a punishment to him, 2) whatever he wants he gets by crying. So now remedy is give him enough time to eat but no choice. Let him cry and console himself to get over the habit of crying. Once he knows that crying will not yield anything, he will be different. It seems he is very sharp, intelligent child. So try these gor a week or two without a break and provide me feedback. No medication please but for deworming medicine every four months.

Hi doc, my son is 5 months old. I am giving both breastfeeding and bottle for him. Once I started with formula his poo changed from yellow to green colour and it's smelling awful. But he seems to be fine. M giving nan pro 1. Is he fine? Or I need to change another brand.

MD - Paediatrics, MBBS
Pediatrician, Jodhpur
The rule of thumb is exclusive breastfeeding till 6 months of age. Bottle feeding at any age is more harmful to health.

Why Breast Feeding Is Important For Your Baby?

MD - Paediatrics

Why Breast Feeding Is Important For Your Baby?

A baby should be breastfeed for at least the first few months after birth. Breastfeeding has a number of benefits for both the mother and child. Apart from being the best source of nutrition for the baby, it also helps the mother and child bond.

Here are a few benefits of breastfeeding your baby.

  1. Nutrition: No formula can be compared to the nutrition provided by a mother’s milk. The first milk produced by a mother’s breasts is known as colostrum which is rich in antibodies and proteins. Breast milk is made up of the perfect mix of proteins, vitamins and essential fats. It is also easier to digest as compared to formula feeds.
  2. Immunity boost: A mother’s milk is rich in antibodies and helps strengthen the newborn child’s immunity. These antibodies also help lower the baby’s risk of developing asthma or allergies later in life. Babies that are breastfed are also said to have a lower risk of suffering from ear infections, respiratory problems and diarrhoea. It also plays an important role in lowering chances of sudden infant death syndrome. Breastfeeding is also said to protect babies from certain types of cancer in infancy and later stages,
  3. Bonding: While being breastfed, a baby is held close to the mother and has skin to skin contact. This makes the baby feel secure and helps him or her to bond with the mother. For the mother, this process can also help fight postpartum depression and help reconnect with the baby.
  4. Healthy weight: Babies who are breastfed are said to be less likely to develop obesity. This is because breast milk has lower levels of insulin as compared to formula and babies who are breastfed have higher level of appetite and fat regulating hormone called leptin. As they grow, these babies put on a healthy amount of weight, but refrain from overeating and have healthier eating patterns. This helps maintain a healthy BMI and prevents diseases like diabetes etc.
  5. Boosts intelligence: Studies show that babies who were breastfed for the first six months have a higher IQ than those who were not. Thus, breastfeeding is said to play a significant role in cognitive development. There are two main reasons for this. Firstly, breast milk is said to fatty acids that are not available in formulas, Secondly, the emotional bonding between mother and child is also said to contribute towards boosting IQ levels. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a pediatrician.

Common Side Effects of Uterine Fibroids

Certification in IVF & Infertility, Diplomate Gynae Laparoscopy, Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (MRCOG), MD - Obstetrics & Gynaecology, MBBS

Common Side Effects of Uterine Fibroids

Many women develop uterine fibroids by the time they hit the age of 50 years and above. These are non-cancerous growths that may occur in the uterus. Most women go through severe bleeding and pain as well as discomfort as a result of these fibroids. Age, family history of the same condition, obesity or being overweight, eating habits and even ethnicity play a large role in deciding the risk of each individual patient. These fibroids can grow in the submucosal, intramural and subserosal areas.

Following are the common side effects of uterine fibroids:

  1. Frequent urination: Due to the pressure of the fibroids on the uterus, the patient may experience a constant feeling of fullness in the lower pelvic area of the body, which may lead to frequent filling of the bladder. This gives rise to frequent trips to the washroom for urination.
  2. Heavy Bleeding: Severe bleeding is one of the most common causes of the presence of these kinds of fibroids. The patient may experience a lot of bleeding during menstrual periods, as well as pain and cramps the rest of the time. The periods will also be very painful when there are fibroids in the uterus or the uterine lining.
  3. Painful Intercourse: It is a well-known fact that any kind of infection or growth as well as sores and other such ailments can lead to vaginal dryness as well as pain during sexual intercourse. This is true for uterine fibroids as well, which can lead to severe pain during sexual activity. These fibroids can also give rise to pain in the lumbar or lower back region.
  4. Abdomen Swelling: The abdomen may go through significant swelling in such a condition and the patient may even look like she is pregnant. The growth can push the shape of the abdomen outwards and create a full feeling.
  5. Pregnancy Complications: The presence of uterine fibroids can give rise to several complications during pregnancy and even after child birth. One of the most common problems in this case is bleeding, followed by more severe outcomes like miscarriage. The women suffering from uterine fibroids are at greater risk of undergoing a caesarean section for the delivery of the baby. The baby may also be born breech and a premature delivery may take place.
  6. Infertility: This is also a rare side effect of the uterine fibroids and is generally seen only in very severe cases.
  7. Cancer: Only one in every 1000 cases might transform into malignant tumours. These uterine fibroids are generally known to be non-malignant.

Any symptoms must be reported to a gynaecologist at the earliest to avoid any serious complications.

How Can Ayurveda Help In Mother And Child Care?

How Can Ayurveda Help In Mother And Child Care?

Motherhood is a big responsibility. Being a caretaker and a nurturer requires a lot of hard work and time. Staying active physically, emotionally and spiritually is the most difficult work of all. It is even more tiring as the entire process of giving birth is a tiring task in itself.

In order to get over this tiredness, according to Ayurveda, one should try to calm their Vata. Spiritual elements of the body are collectively called Vata. Vata is responsible for maintaining the balance and order of the body.

How to calm Vata?

For the Mother:
A mother is tired, sleep deprived, and in pain after the daunting process of giving birth.

  • She should be present in cold and dry environment at all times
  • To calm her Vata, she should maintain her diet as well
  • This includes having light food, good fruits, and a lot of water
  • It is very important to remember she shouldn’t eat spicy food at all
  • She should try having food that provides nourishment to the body by including special herbs in the food, like Fenugreek, Ashwagandha and Pippali. These herbs stimulate the nourishing quality of food and provide the perfect balance to body.

For the Baby:

When it comes to taking care of infants, the best medicine and nurturer is the mother’s milk.

  • After the toddler is 10-11 months old, Ayurveda can play a major role in their diet.
  • Rasayana and Chyawanprash can boost immunity in children and calm their Vata.
  • Swarna bhasma when mixed with ghee and honey can be a very effective medicine during cold.
  • Shankhapushpi is also a medicinal herb that is very useful to boost immunity during the winters.

Physical Care

  • Physical care is important for both the mother and the baby. This includes mild massages and exercises from time to time.
  • Massages in the mother should be focused on the hip and the lower back region, as those are the places that experience most pain in the body. Ashwagandha and Bala oils are the best to massage with.
  • When it comes to the child, the most focused part is the skin. Though infants shouldn’t be subjected to massages at first, after a year, one can massage a baby with Snehana and Ashwagandha oils to improve the skin.

Emotional Care

  1. The mother and the child need emotional support more than anything. This requires a mother to spend time with her child as much as possible.
  2. A mother should get ample amount of sleep during the nights. So, as much as possible, the father should take care of the child during the nights.

Above are some of the best practices to nurture mother and the child. But it's not an easy task. It's going to be challenging and confusing, but once this becomes a habit, everything will fall into places. Consulting an Ayurvedic doctor is very helpful at this stage.

Please consult your doctor again and update him on your son's health. He might change the medicines or reduce the dose. You also have the option of changing your doctor. These medications usually come with many side effects. I suggest that you do your own research, read up and educate yourself and take an informed decision. The health of your son could be because of this medicine or something in his diet or the seasonal changes. Though allopathy medicines bring faster relief, they come with numerous side effects. On the other hand, ayurveda and homeopathy are gentler on the mind and body and fewer side effects and sometimes slow to show improvement. Nevertheless, you are doing a wonderful job as a parent and taking care of your son. Take care.
