Impotency - Can Lifestyle Changes Help?

Impotence, also known as erectile dysfunction, is a condition in which a man is not able to maintain an erection during sexual intercourse. It can be triggered by a variety of conditions like smoking, intake of certain drugs, health disorders or excessive consumption of alcohol. Although treatment options like medication and surgery are available, there are non-invasive treatments that can help a person fight the condition.

Here are some of them:
1. Engage in a physical workout -
Among the many types of lifestyle changes that could be resorted to, exercise is the most effective one. Exercising improves blood flow and blood pressure in the body, both of which are essential for getting and maintaining a normal erection for a prolonged time. Plus, exercising also increases the level of testosterone, which is a crucial factor in sex drive.
2. Follow a balanced dietThe food you consume has a direct effect on your health and subsequently on your sex drive. A diet consisting of fruits, veggies, fish and lesser servings of red meat and refined grains can decrease the risk of impotency. Also, a healthy diet helps to maintain a stable body weight, which aids in sexual activity. Overconsumption of junk foods can cause obesity and diabetes, which are responsible for impotence.
3. Get sufficient sleep - Apart from a host of health problems, lack of sleep may also you render you impotent. Studies have shown that testosterone levels of men who are sleep deprived are much lower than in those who get their 8 hours of sleep. A proper sleep schedule should thus be duly adhered to.
4. Quit smoking and limit your alcohol consumption - Erectile dysfunction can be the cause of vascular disease. This occurs when the blood supply to the penis becomes restricted due to the blockage and narrowing of arteries. Alcohol and smoking can be responsible for this and can be the cause of both temporary and long-term impotence. Therefore, it's important to limit your alcohol consumption and quit smoking altogether.

Vitamin D is believed to help improve the body's sensitivity to insulin – the hormone responsible for regulating blood sugar levels – and thus reduce the risk of insulin resistance, which is often a precursor to type 2 diabetes.. & low vit d also causes erectile dysfunction..

Can Ayurveda Help With Fertility?

BAMS, MD - Ayurveda

Can Ayurveda Help With Fertility?

Infertility is a condition when a woman fails to conceive even after a year of unprotected regular sexual intercourse. If she is unable to carry the baby to term, it’s called infertility too. Mankind has made giant leaps in curing this condition. But something’s still lacking. This is where the ancient healing system of medicine Ayurveda comes in.

There are a number of reasons for infertility we know women can’t get pregnant if their partner’s sperm count is low or if they have obstructions in their reproductive system like blocked fallopian tubes or fibroids etc. But Ayurveda goes beyond all these. According to it, infertility arises when “shukra dhatu” which produces eggs in women and sperms in me, is weak due to lack of proper nutrition which may happen as a result of poor digestion, lack of balanced diet or due to a presence of ‘ama’ or toxins in the body.

Ayurveda also prescribes that sexual indulgence and promiscuity can cause infertility due to the decrease in shukra dhatu. Ayurvedic fertility enhancers

For men:

  1. Kapikacchu: A potent antioxidant, this medicine reduces oxidative damage to sperm. It is also an aphrodisiac and helps increase sperm count.
  2. Gokshura: Contains a precursor to testosterone, and thus improves sexual desire and sperm production.

For women

  1. Ashoka: It stimulates the endometrium in uterus and ovaries and aids ovulation.
  2. Lodhra: Cures female disorders which stop conception and increase levels of reproductive hormones like FSH and LH essential for conception.
  3. Shatavari: Nourishes ovum and increases fertility because it contain estrogen –like compounds.
  4. Gokshura: This herb is helpful for both men and women. It helps cure erectile dysfunction and is very effective in improving sperm count and motility. Whereas in women it works as a fertility tonic that stimulates the ovaries and thus cures PCOS, a leading cause of infertility in women.

What Ayurveda recommends is eating a diet rich in foods like ‘ghee’, milk, almonds, walnuts, sesame and pumpkin seeds to improve health and thus shukra that. Since ‘vata’ dosha is closely connected to the reproductive system in women, it should be regulated for proper ovulation. And so should be extra stress and worry in both men and women.

Other ways to cure infertility, especially in men, is to wear loose underwear, so that ‘pitta’ is controlled and the sperm production is good. This also ensures good quality of sperm. Ayurveda should never be practised by self. Always consult an expert who will prescribe the right medicines for infertility. Doing everything in balance is crucial too. So be mindful of what you eat, think, watch, read and eat right and develop a healthy body for getting rid of infertility.

6 Risk Factors Of Developing Diabetic Nephropathy!

MD - Medicine, MBBS
Endocrinologist, Delhi
6 Risk Factors Of Developing Diabetic Nephropathy!

Diabetes is not an isolated disease but a syndrome. It brings with it a host of issues, affecting almost all organs, and that is the reason it is a dreaded issue. Diabetes is the result of chronic inflammation and this inflammation gradually spreads to all other organs. One of the main organs adversely affected is the kidneys. The kidneys are essential filtration agents, and impaired kidney function can have a series of bad effects on the body.

The good news is that not everybody with diabetes will have diabetic nephropathy. However, risk factors for developing diabetic nephropathy are:

  1. Severe, uncontrolled diabetes
  2. Family history
  3. Prior kidney disease, even chronic infection
  4. Race or ethnicity (native Americans, African Americans, etc.)
  5. Preexisting hypertension or high cholesterol levels
  6. Obesity

If you have these risk factors, then all efforts should be aimed at keeping blood sugar at highly optimal level. Once it reaches beyond a certain level, it is very difficult to get it under control.

Symptoms

There would be no symptoms in the initial stages

  1. If you suspect that increased sugar levels could be damaging the kidneys, it is imperative to do renal functions annually to test for onset of kidney malfunction
  2. There could be swelling of the feet and ankles
  3. Urine tests may indicate increased levels of protein in the body (serum albumin in particular)

Management

The idea is to arrest or stop damage to the kidneys.

  1. Reduce and maintain blood pressure within the recommended levels. This will depend on the age and overall health status. Using angiotensin converting enzymes or angiotensin receptor blockers is the most effective way to control hypertension and related kidney damage
  2. Keeping blood sugar within the recommended levels helps reduce or stop damage to the blood vessels in the kidneys and thereby, prevent progression
  3. Maintain optimal levels of cholesterol, as this only adds to hypertension, which further worsens kidney function.
  4. Eat a heart-healthy diet and exercise regularly. It is a vicious cycle with components including hypertension, high sugar levels, increased heart disease, which all only continues in a circle nonstop. Breaking this cyclical trend is very important.
  5. Diet should not be too rich in protein, as the kidney function is impaired and may not be able to handle too much protein. Talk to a nutritionist as to how much protein is required and follow it strictly.
  6. Reduce salt levels in the diet, and strictly do not add extra salt onto your plate
  7. If you are a smoker, this is a great reason to quit, as it affects all the above conditions.
  8. Maintain weight under optimal levels. If you wish to discuss any specific problem, you can consult an endocrinologist.

In my blood test report - serum uric acid is 7.4 What are the problems develop in my body?

BHMS
Homeopath, Chennai
In my blood test report - serum uric acid is 7.4 What are the problems develop in my body?
Normal Uric acid levels are 2.4-6.0 mg/dL (female) and 3.4-7.0 mg/dL (male) Some diets that are rich in purine end up causing an increased production of uric acid. In other cases, it may be due to a completely sedentary lifestyle. Less intake of water also may be to blame in some cases as water plays an important role in washing out the excess of the uric acid. Regular usage of some medicines also cause the uric acid levels to rise. Another important factor is being overweight as obese people are much more likely to get gout as compared to those who have normal weight. It is a tragedy of the modern world that the superior advertising and marketing power of the allopathic system of medicine has eclipsed the good and genuine work of Homeopathy. This is largely because Homeopathic system of medicine cannot compete with the money power of Allopathy. Just because allopathy does not have any cure for gout, patients tend to think that there is no cure for gout at all. People are not aware of the great work that Homeopathy can do in the cure of gout. I cannot stress enough here that homeopathic medicines are pretty effective at curing the acute as well as the chronic gout You can easily take an online consultation for further treatment guidance and permanent cure without any side effects

Diabetes and Oral Health- Tips For Diabetics

BDS

Diabetes and Oral Health- Tips For Diabetics

We know that diabetes can harm your eyes, nerves, kidneys, heart and other important systems in your body. But did you know it can also cause dental and gum problems in your mouth?

The link between diabetes and oral problems is real, though lesser known. Diabetics are at a higher risk for periodontal or gum disease which is an infection of the gum and bone that hold your teeth in place.

Untreated periodontal disease can lead to pain on chewing and even tooth loss, if it’s left untreated. Gum disease can also more severe and take longer to heal if you are a diabetic.

Research also shows that alternatively, periodontal disease may also make it hard for you to control your blood glucose.

If your diabetes is not under control, you are more likely to develop problems in your mouth like-

  1. Dry mouth, a condition that happens when you do not have enough saliva—the fluid that keeps your mouth wet. It is a common symptom of undetected diabetes and can also cause mouth soreness, ulcers, infections, and tooth decay.
  2. Another problem diabetes can cause is a fungal infection called thrush or candidiasis because diabetes usually causes the glucose levels in your saliva to increase. And this encourages the fungus causing thrush to grow in your mouth, leading to painful white patches.
  3. When diabetes is not controlled, high glucose levels in your saliva also help harmful bacteria grow in your mouth. These bacteria combine with food particles to form a soft, sticky film called plaque which causes tooth decay. Plaque also comes from eating sugary and starchy foods.
  4. And some types of plaque cause tooth decay or cavities and other types of plaque cause gum disease and bad breath.
  5. Diabetics have a higher incidence of Gingivitis which causes unhealthy, red, inflamed gums. You need regular flossing as well as cleaning at the dentists to prevent it.

What can you do?

  1. You must keep your blood glucose under control to prevent mouth problems. Diabetics with poor blood glucose control get gum disease more often and more severely than diabetics whose blood sugar is under control.
  2. If you have diabetes, you should brush and floss every day and follow this up with regular dental check-ups.
  3. Call your dentist when you notice a problem in your mouth. Keep observing and checking your mouth regularly for any problems. Don’t ignore minor stuff like gum bleeding during brushing and flossing. And also notice dryness, soreness, white patches, or a bad taste in the mouth. All of these are big enough reasons to visit your dentist.
  4. Tell your dentist if your dentures suddenly don’t fit right or if your gums are sore.

Also, take care to quit smoking. Smoking makes gum disease worse and causes dry mouth which aggravates oral problems.

Needless to add, good blood glucose control is your best defence against the oral complications of diabetes like gum disease. If you wish to discuss any specific problem, you can consult a dentist.

Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. If you are on right treatment then you have to continue the same. Because hypothyroidism has to be treated for life time. Only important thing is to maintain TSH level at <3 mU/L, to be free from all the symptoms. Thanks.

Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. It is clear that current treatment is inadequate, needs to be updated. Ideally FBG should be <100 mg & PP 150 to 160 mg & HbA1c% <6.8. As regards BP, it should be 120 to 130 /70 to 80 mm Hg. So please see that you are able to achieve these targets. As regards other two practices you may try, but unfortunately to control diabetes best option id modern drugs plus diet control and regular exercise. Thanks.

As your sugar levels are still on the higher side there is need to change your drug dose like increasing the dose of salts present in glycomet GP that is metformin and glimipride. But do consult your treating doctor for the same. Along with it exercise daily including brisk walk of 20 min.

Hello, Thanks for the query. The blood glucose levvels shown are very high, can cause serious long term complication of diabetes affecting every single vital organ in the body. So controlling it and bringing it near normal is absolutely essential. Another major issue with you is the morbid obesity with a BMI of over 46.59 kgs/M2, It is absolutely necessary to reduce your weight (your ideal body weight should be <72 kgs). Diet and exercise might help in reduction of about 5 to 8 % of weight, not more. Best option is undergoing bariatric surgery. Please consider this seriously. Thanks.
