One of the most common infections, particularly among children, is strep throat, and due to its contagious nature, it is important to recognize the symptoms quickly, and also know home remedies for the infection, including the use of salt water, garlic, cayenne, apple cider vinegar, licorice root, honey, peppermint, and fenugreek tea, among others.
Caused by the group of streptococcus bacteria, strep throat is a fairly common infection that attacks the back of the throat, including the tonsils, and is spread through respiratory droplets – such as saliva and sneezing – which can be picked up from any surface and spread by touching the eyes, mouth or nose. The ease with which this infection can be spread makes it particularly common in schools and among children, who have yet to develop proper hygiene protocols. While there are certain possible complications, such as rheumatoid fever, this infection can usually be taken care of rapidly, without any permanent damage. Following exposure to the streptococcus bacteria, the infection usually manifests in less than three days, and can last for a week or more, particularly in severe cases.
Some of the most common symptoms of strep throat include fever, enlarged lymph node in the neck, difficult or painful swallowing, red tonsils and a constantly sore throat, as well as headaches and nausea in some cases. While many people simply think a “sore throat” is an oncoming illness, cold or a symptom of a flu, strep throat of some kind is responsible for up to 40% of “sore throats” in children. For this reason, if your child (or you) is displaying these symptoms and complaining of a worse than normal sore throat, there is a very good chance they have contracted the infection and medical attention should be sought out. In the past, parents have commonly turned to antibiotics to quickly eliminate the infection, but repeated visits to the doctor for this condition, combined with antibiotic resistance over time, has caused some people to turn to home remedies, which can be highly effective. Furthermore, since there is a very small chance of this infection increasing in severity or endangering your life, natural remedies are a wise choice.
Home remedies for strep throat:
Garlic: As with so many other ailments, one of the most effective and fast-acting home remedies for strep throat is a clove of garlic. While this hardly sounds appetizing, if you are suffering with this infection, you can cut a garlic clove in half and suck on it, occasionally swallowing and allowing your saliva to carry the garlic’s natural compounds down into the throat. Garlic contains allicin as its active ingredient, which has powerful antibacterial properties and can also reduce inflammation, thus helping soothe the painful burning in your throat and attacking the underlying infection.
Salt water: Few remedies are as simple or successful as a salt water gargle when it comes to naturally treating a strep throat. The taste is anything but pleasant, but it can quickly suck the water from the inflamed tissues and cells in your throat, easing the pressure and making it easier to swallow. Salt is also very effective at breaking up mucus, so any associated congestion from the infection in your sinuses can be cleared out as well, speeding the healing process.
Chamomile tea: Not only is chamomile a soothing and delicious beverage, but it also has certain antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and astringent properties, which can help it eliminate strep throat very quickly. Chamomile tea is known to boost the immune system to fend off the underlying infection, while the astringent properties can help relieve the raw, narrow feeling in your throat that makes swallowing so painful.
Honey: As a natural healing agent, honey is packed with important minerals, antioxidants and organic compounds that can boost overall health. However, there is a very good reason why people put honey in their tea so often; it naturally coats the throat and relieves inflammation and pain, being an analgesic. This can reduce the irritation in the throat and also stimulate the healing process by neutralizing dangerous bacteria.
Lemon and water: Many of the best remedies for strep throat include gargling, and mixing lemon and water is also highly effective. Gargling this mixture can soothe the throat and also deliver citric acid and antibacterial effects to the inflamed areas, helping you to get relief and ward off the bacteria.
Ginger: Ginger is a powerful antioxidant compound with an active ingredient called gingerol, which has immune-boosting properties and can easily defend against the bacteria that causes strep throat. Let ginger soak in water overnight and then gargle each morning; it will not only clear your sinuses, but also help eliminate the bacterial infection more quickly.
Cayenne: It may seem counterintuitive to put cayenne pepper in your throat, given how spicy it can be, but in reality, capsaicin (the active ingredient in most peppers) is an excellent analgesic and anti-inflammatory substance. Mix some cayenne pepper with water and gargle for 10-20 seconds and feel the irritation of strep throat disappear!
Steam inhalation: As with many respiratory problems, inhaling steam deep into your lungs can help to loosen congestion and works as an expectorant. Since excess coughing and congestion can wear on the throat, further irritating the inflamed tissues, getting this congestion out is crucial, particularly because the bacteria often seeks out mucus to multiply and thrive.
Apple cider vinegar: There is an extremely high level of acidity in apple cider vinegar, which means that it can effectively eliminate bacteria, and it has long been known as an immune system booster. Mixing a bit of apple cider vinegar into lukewarm water and gargling with it 1-2 times per day can speed the recovery process of strep throat.
Peppermint: One of the key ingredients in peppermint that delivers so many of its health benefits if menthol, which is well known to cut through mucus and soothe the throat, reducing the urge to cough, which would further irritate the inflamed tissues. Peppermint oil mixed with water can be an excellent way to reduce inflammation and speed healing.
Turmeric: With its legendary active ingredient curcumin, turmeric remains a popular remedy for almost every affliction you can think of. The incredible antioxidant potential of turmeric is an instant boost for the immune system and can quickly knock out the infection causing strep throat, while also reducing inflammation in the throat and easing pain, as a result of its analgesic properties.
Licorice root: A very effective tea for curing strep throat can be made with licorice root, as it functions as a cough suppressant. The irritation of strep throat can cause excessive coughing, which then makes the throat more inflamed, forming a vicious cycle. A cup of this tea, however, and the urge to cough will disappear.
Final word of warning: While strep throat is often considered “harmless”, remember that it is highly contagious for 2-3 weeks without the use of antibiotics, and special care should be taken when sending a child back to school. Severe pain or long-lasting symptoms should definitely be presented to a doctor, and antibiotics should be considered, particularly if this is the first time strep throat has been contracted.
The heart's electrical conduction system plays a very important role in cardiovascular functioning. Also known as the atrioventricular (AV) conduction system, it regulates and controls the timing of the heartbeat.
How does the heart's electrical conduction system work?
There is a collection of electrical cells in the upper right atrium of the heart known as the sinoatrial (SA) node which acts as a natural pacemaker and generates electrical signals. These signals travel through specialized electrical pathways and stimulate the muscular walls of the heart to contract in a rhythmic manner. This gives rise to the heartbeat that pulses at a specific frequency every minute.
What is the effect of fluctuations in electrical activity on the heart?
The standard heart rate in human being ranges from 60 to 100 beats per minute. It slows down when a person sleeps and speeds up when one experiences physical or emotional heightening. These fluctuations are triggered by the brain or other systems of the body and signal the SA node to generate charges more rapidly or slowly. This leads to spikes and drops in the heart rate, depending on the nature of the situation.
What happens when there is dysfunction in the heart's electrical activity?
When the heart's electrical conduction system does not function properly, it leads to the occurrence of a condition known as arrhythmia or abnormal heart rhythm. This happens when electrical impulses are generated in an irregular manner and causes tachycardia (rapid heartbeats) or bradycardia (slow heartbeats) which takes place in jarring infrequent tempos.
What causes fluctuations in the heart's electrical activity?
There are various kinds of triggers that cause the heart rate to fluctuate. The exact nature of fluctuation also depends on the type of trigger. A few everyday examples of these causes are as follows:
- Exercise and strenuous physical activity increases electrical activity as the heart is required to beat faster so as to increase the supply of blood and oxygen to the muscles.
- Sleep and rest reduce heart rate as the body is not needed to exert itself.
- Release of adrenaline into the bloodstream causes the heart rate to spike up. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a cardiologist.

Erectile dysfunction in men is the condition that signifies the inability to achieve or maintain an erection. Also known as impotence, it creates a great problem for a man and his partner in terms of sexual function.
The cause of erectile dysfunction can be physical, medical, or psychological in nature. Sexual prowess and libido in men are affected by various systems of the body and the mind.
Some of the most commonly occurring causes are:
- Old age
- Stress and anxiety
- Addiction to nicotine and alcohol
- Narcotics abuse
- Physical injuries
- Nervous disorders
- Obesity and high cholesterol
- Cardiac disease and heart complications
How does Ayurveda provide relief from this problem?
Treatment methods used for erectile dysfunction depend on the specific cause and nature of the condition. Ayurveda provides an effective remedy to the problem of impotence through long-established healing methods. Ayurvedic treatment makes use of traditional herbal medicine that cures the condition and prevents it from reoccurring.
In Ashtanga Ayurveda, sexual dysfunction is treated through medication composed of vajikarana herbs. 'Vaji' is the Sanskrit word for a horse, which is an age-old symbol of virility and sexual potency. These herbs have been conventionally used to cure conditions related to erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, lack of libido and male infertility.
A few herbs used in vajikarana therapy for treating erectile dysfunction are as follows:
- Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus)
- The 'panchaule' orchid (Dactylorhiza hatagirea)
- Safed Musli (Chlorophytum borivilianum)
- Kali Musli (Curculigo orchioides Gaertn.)
Scientific tests and studies have shown that these ayurvedic herbs are effective in providing a remedy for the problem of impotence in men. This form of therapy takes a holistic approach in treating and curing the symptoms of erectile dysfunction by eliminating the root cause of the problem. The greatest advantage of this treatment method is that there are no side effects. Relapses of the condition also do not occur. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an ayurveda.

List of 10 foods high in uric acid to avoid
1. Red meat: Red meat is one of the certain foods that deliver more uric acid than other foods in your diet. However, poultry and white meats, like pork are also high in the uric acid, so it is best to keep your intake of meats and wild meat to an overall minimum. If you’ve high uric acid levels or gout, you should avoid these meats or at least limit to 4 – 6 ounces per day. Instead, you can maintain a steady mix of fruits and vegetables to go with your meals and snacks.
2. Organ meats: Like white and red meat, organ meats also deliver a high amount of the uric acid. Though you can enjoy having onions or livers for dinner, it is best to cut down on this meal as well as other foods which include organ meats such as sweetbreads, tongue, tripe, and pate.
3. Seafood and fish: If you are a seafood lover, you will be really disappointed to know that seafood and fish are off limits during gout flare-ups because they are other main sources of the uric acid (purines) in your diet. Besides, herring, anchovies, tuna, sardines and other oily fishes should also cut back on your dinner table because they not only aggravate gout symptoms but also trigger one. However, when your gout can be under control, it’s ok to indulge in scallops, shrimp, lobster, crab salmon, or eel. You need to be sure that you do not eat more than 4 to 6 ounces per day of whatever kind of seafood and fish you choose to eat.
4. Beer and alcohol: In fact, beer is twice as bad for people with gout than seafood and meats. That is because it will raise the production of the uric acid levels in the body and make the body more difficult to remove the excess uric acid. Although alcohol does not have much harm compared with beer, it can still raise uric acid levels. Hence, most doctors always recommend avoiding all beer and alcohol if you suffer from gout.
5. Drinks high in sugar: You should not reach for both soda and fruit juice with fruit sugar. These drinks deliver high fructose corn syrup that will stimulate the production of uric acid. According to studies, women and men who consume a lot of fructose and take many drinks with fructose corn syrup will get a higher risk of having gout. Instead of sugary beverages, you can stick with water, coffee, tea or pure, fresh-squeezed juice.
6. Asparagus and spinach: In fact, animal products aren't the only foods which are high in uric acid.
Certain vegetables such as asparagus and spinach can also trigger a gout flare-up. However, they do not seem to cause much harm compared with animal-based foods. Uric acid from vegetables is also excreted from your body more easily than uric acid that comes from seafood and meats.
7. Cauliflower: Cauliflower is a bland vegetable and is rich in the uric acid. However, vegetables can help your body get rid of the uric acid and purines, so you need not cut them out of the diet completely. Besides, they also have nutrients that can reduce insulin resistance that plays an important role in controlling the gout flare-ups.
8. Beans, peas, and other legumes: Beans, peas, and other legumes also have good sources of uric acid, which can make them become poor food sources for people who have gout. According to world’s healthiest foods, peas have a moderately high amount of uric acid, which is 5 – 100 milligrams of uric acid per 3.5-ounce serving. However, when peas, spinach, and asparagus are eaten in raw form, they will cause less damage than in cooked form, as long as you consume a small portion.
9. Mushrooms: If you’re thinking of eating mushrooms as a replacement source for meat, you should think of something else. Actually, like legumes, mushrooms are considered to contain a moderately high amount of uric acid.
10. Oats: Though there has been some discussion about the exact amount of uric acid that oats contain, oatmeal and other foods which contain oats deliver a moderate amount of the uric acid. Most doctors recommend that those who suffer from gout should limit their consumption of oatmeal as well as other oat-based foods.
Although this list can seem discouraging if you suffer from gout, many of these above foods can still be consumed, provided, as long as you only take the small portions and only have them when you aren't having a gout flare-up. Besides, other foods such as coffee, tea, citrus fruits, foods rich in complex carbohydrates, and foods rich in dairy can really prevent gout flare-ups and therefore, are recommended for those who have gout.

Sun therapy for Premature ejaculation.
Exposure of glans penis to sun light is a standard therapy for premature ejaculation and may be even more effective than antidepressant medications in treating this condition. World famous sexologist Dr. C sharath kumar has done research and shown that sun therapy works by desensitisation of the glans penis. It makes glans mucosa rough and tough.
Also it accumulates melonin pigment.
Sun therapy also helps in reducing balano posthitis which is one of the cause of pe.
Early morning or evening walk in the sun may help fight the depression and anxiety that often accompany pe. You might also consider investing in a sun lamp or light box, which may help raise serotonin by mimicking the bright rays of the sun.
I have GERD and want to avoid surgery. I am told that it can be managed by changes in life style and medicines. But I am also told that over a prolonged period of time anti-acids are habit forming/addictive and have their severe side effects. Please advise.
How to protect yourself from the sun without chemicals?
With the weather getting warmer by the day and the sun feeling so good to soak up, it’s time to think about the effects it can have on our skin. While many moms and dads, beach goers, and just people in general instinctively reach out for sunscreens, this might be one time when it’s much better not to listen to your instincts. Sunscreens have come under fire of late because, too often, they are laced with chemical that do more harm damage than good – to you and the environment.
Luckily, that doesn’t mean that we have to give up the sun and stay inside all summer. There are some very basic, common sense ways to protect ourselves from the sun without the chemicals, and there are some simple, natural solutions for those moments when sunscreen is a must. Not only are we going to be healthier for this, but we are going to get to enjoy the sunshine and avoid the price we sometimes have to pay.
Food: It should come as no shock that diet can play a huge role in keeping our bodies healthy, including the largest organ: skin. There are certain foods we can be eating that will help protect the skin from within. Carrots and other foods rich in vitamins a and c, tomatoes and other foods rich in lycopene, and many, many other foods go into to providing the skin with all it needs to stay safe and cancer free. First and foremost, we need to provide a good diet.
Clothing: Sensible clothing choices just make … well, sense. While bikinis (and mankinis) are wonderfully fun in the sun, they can be used at select times, and the rest of the time we can use protective clothing. Light, long-sleeved shirts, wide-brimmed hats, and sarongs all make for great skin protection when the time for flaunting and frolicking barely frocked isn’t ideal. Cover the skin up, and the sun won’t damage it.
Shade: Whether it is umbrellas on the beach, finding a patio roof somewhere, or stretching out beneath a tree, it seems fairly sensible to seek the shelter of some shade. Not only does it keep us from overheating in the sizzling summer sun, but it keeps our skin from roasting in it. Most beaches, parks, and picnic areas have plenty of shady spots available, so settle in those and take the sun in healthy increments.
Diy sunscreen: Sunscreens can be pretty nasty for the environment, as well as our bodies. When we get all lathered up and dive into oceans, lakes, and rivers, much of it washes off and straight into the eco-system, where it then poisons plant and animal life. Sunscreens often have chemicals that are damaging to our bodies as well, so it is important to go with all-natural (vegan) products or to make our own diy versions, a much cheaper option.
After-sun treatments: Of course, no method is infallible or completely unforgettable, so accidents do happen from time to time. In these moments, it’s important to help our skin get back up to snuff as quickly and painlessly as possible. Natural after-sun skin products are generally filled with vitamins and minerals and lovely things that enable the skin to heal itself, or there are easy-to-do diy versions that are equally all-natural and effective, as well as affordable.
Timing: The sun is usually at its most wickedly brutal in the middle of the day, between about 10: 00 and 3: 00, so it is probably best to exercise more caution during these hours. This can turn out to be advantageous because beaches and parks tend to be a little less crowded outside these peak hours, so there will likely be more space to get out and enjoy the sunshine fully. Plus, it isn’t nearly as hot, and shade is usually much easier to find when the sun is at an angle rather than right overhead.
In the end, the right way to protect ourselves from the sun is to enjoy it — like with anything — sensibly. That means taking it in moderation, providing our bodies with the right nutrition for healthy skin, and protecting that skin from the excessive sun when necessary. Then, by all means, get outside and get some vitamin d.
