Stress and Stuttering - How to Deal with It?

Stress and Stuttering - How to Deal with It?

Stuttering is a type of speech disorder wherein, a person speaks slower than normal. It is quite  common in the age group of 3 to 8. The relationship between stress and stuttering has been pondered over for decades now. A lot of people seem to believe that stress and stuttering are co-related. On the contrary, recent studies show that stress is more of a consequence rather than a cause of stuttering. If you take the first theory into consideration, then according to that, children would be the greatest victims of anxiety and stress. But it is seen that the level of stress increases proportionately with the increase in age.

Social anxiety in teenagers increases due to stuttering, when they come across individuals who can speak in a normal pace. This in turn can crush their self confidence and lead them to isolate themselves from social groups and people in general. Hence, it is important to deal with stuttering in the early ages or as and when it occurs.

Sometimes stuttering can develop due to physical or mental trauma.  Most people with stuttering do not seek therapy for it because they might not think of it to be too severe. Little do they realise that a simple process of speech therapy can help them overcome this disability and rejuvenate their level of self-confidence.

It has also come to light, that people with relapse in stuttering post therapy has shown a three-fold increase in anxiety levels than normal. Hence we cannot ignore the strong relationship between stress and stuttering. So from the above evidence, it is safe to conclude that social anxiety or stress develops as a result of chronic stuttering.

How to deal with stress related to stuttering?

Seeking help is a great start to tackle your disability. If your stuttering is prominent enough to warrant therapy, you must seek professional help for the same. You must also learn to control your anxiety by dismissing any anxious thought or make sincere efforts in controlling physical anxiety.

You can also try to increase your social skills by participating in events, such as public speaking that can reduce your stress levels and make yourself more confident about yourself. One must also remember that a person is defined by what he does rather than what he says. So never let a minor disability come in the way of your self worth!

All About Tongue Problems

All About Tongue Problems

Tongue is an important organ of your body. Without the tongue you would not have been able to enjoy one of the most pleasurable experiences of life: tasting food! Imagine how life would be without the sudden euphoria you experience when you taste something delicious. Not only do your taste buds help you to taste food, but it also rejects harmful substances like toxins and sends your brain a signal to avoid consuming it. The tongue also helps in digestion of food. It makes the food pass easily from your mouth and throat to your stomach. Apart from tasting and sending signals to your brain, the tongue helps you to talk. It facilitates speech. It alters the air in your mouth which is produced by the vocal cords. That is how you make a wide range of sounds.

Tongue Problems:

  1. Burning sensation on the tongue: This normally occurs in women who have recently attained menopause. Mood swings are also a characteristic feature of menopause. Burning sensation is rare but a symptom of post menopause. Burning sensations can also occur due to cigarette smoking.

  2. Change in the tongue color: Many times having a pink tongue means deficiency in iron, folic acid and vitamin B-12. This can also be because of an allergy to gluten. A white tongue can occur due to smoking or drinking alcohol.

  3. Tongue pain: It can occur due to biting, injury or infection. Canker pains are also common. It can be caused by aging, diabetes, tumors and infection.

  4. Tongue swelling: It is caused by down-syndrome, tongue cancer, leukemia, strep throat and anemia.

  5. Oral thrush: It is a yeast infection. It makes the surface of the tongue and the mouth look like cottage cheese. People suffering from asthma or diabetes can also get oral thrush.

Remedies for tongue problem:

  1. Don't consume spicy and hot food.

  2. If you have a canker sore, try to drink only cold beverages and eat soft foods.

  3. Rinse your mouth regularly with a mixture of warm water and salt or you can also make a mixture of warm water and baking soda.

  4. Apply ice to soothe your tongue.

If the tongue pain persists then it is better to book an appointment with an ENT specialist or with an otolaryngologist.

Dear First thing. You must improve your diet and exercise on a daily basis. Start eating Chavanprash with one full glass of milk daily. His will improve your immunity. Eat foods rich in proteins and minerals to improve blood, bones and muscle mass. Take atlaeast 5 spoons of cow ghee daily. Rely on natural foods to regain health. Most important. It is not mentally or physically healthy to take drugs to abort pregnancy. If you must, take nirodh or such kind of care to avoid unwanted pregnancies. For a little bit of pleasure, do not loose your health now or of the future. Take care.

Cholestrol HDL low se kya problem hoti hai?
Hello dear patient. High cholesterol can cause atherosclerotic heart disease or narrowed coronary arteries in the heart can cause the symptoms of angina, when theheart muscle is not provided with enough oxygen to function. Decreased blood supply to the brain may be due to narrowed small arteries in the brain or because the larger carotidarteries in the neck may become blocked. This can result in a transient ischmic attack or stroke. Peripheral artery disease describes gradual narrowing of the arteries that supply the legs. During exercise , if the legs do not get enough blood supply, they can develop pain , called claudication . Other arteries in the body may also be affected by plaque buildup causing them to narrow, including the mesenteric arteries to the intestine and the renal arteries to the kidney. Change life style . Go walk daily, do any one physically activity daily i.e.play any game., Avoid fast foods, oily foods, junk foods, alcohol, smoking, fatty foods, non-veg.,avoid stress, use flax oil, omega-3 fatty meal or cap., take .green veg., whole grain. garlic,. Low back pain can be due to many different causes such as muscular, disc/spondylosis, joint/degenerative arthritis or in young people due to poor posture and weak abdominal and back muscles. Try simple stretching exercises for the low back and leg muscles. Use alternate ice packs and hot water fermentation over painful area as tolerated. Sleep over firm mattress, not too soft and not very hard. Be aware of your posture throughout the day. If pain persists then consult a orthopaedic physiotherapist. Good luck for quick recovery. Try core stability exercises to strengthen back abdominals and hip muscles.

Hi my age 29 and am very veeknesd feeling I am very medicine try but not fitness my body.
Hi lybrate-user It is crucial to start your day with abundant energy. Factors such as overwork, pollution, poor nutrition and stress lead to building up of toxins and in the process slow the body down. To propel the body to work further, we start consuming stimulants like energy-boosting drugs, coffee, cigarettes, etc. The main issue is that people don't understand which energy-giving food should be consumed. We should be able to select the right energy-giving foods, which build up the body and prevent the destruction from stimulants. The following are some healthy snacks recipes, which would help you rebuild the lost stamina. (I) Soya bean delight This snack is based on a variety of simple preparation techniques and readily available foods. The powerful health benefits of these nutrient-dense foods provide the extra energy you need. This recipe has a blend of fruits, seeds, nuts, and soya beans drenched with the goodness of vegetable juice as a dressing. Take a look at a few delightful, healthy snack recipes: Sesame seeds3 tbsp. Almonds (skin removed)10 nos. Black raisins20-25 Pomegranate (shredded)1 Apple1 Orange1 Honey1tbsp Carrot1 Beetroot1 Soy Nutsa handful Method of preparation Roast sesame seeds & keep aside. Soak black raisin in warm water for 10 minutes and keep aside. Make a juice of the carrot and beetroot and keep aside. Mix all the remaining ingredients in a bowl. Sprinkle the roasted sesame seeds & soy nuts on it. Now pour the carrot beetroot juice on it and add one tablespoon of honey. Enjoy this colourful, healthy bowl of energy-giving food. N.B. Soya Nuts from Anjali Mukerjee Health Total are available at most leading departmental stores in Mumbai. Nutritional information about ingredients There are three varieties of sesame seeds i.e. Black, white and red. You could use any of these three in the recipe. Black sesame seeds are considered to be a rich source of iron and are valuable in the treatment of anaemia. The white ones are rich in calcium and should be consumed by postmenopausal woman. The red variety is also rich in iron. Almonds are known to be rich in all the elements needed by the body. The thin-skinned variety, known as the kagzi badam, is the best for daily consumption. Nuts like almonds are an excellent energy-giving food and a rich source of vitamin E, which is a potent antioxidant. Almonds are loaded with copper, iron, and calcium. As a result, they prove nutritious for both children & older women. They also serve as a laxative and can help relieve constipation problems. Among other benefits, black raisins are extremely useful in the treatment of acidity. All fruits render quick bouts of energy and serve as a delightful ready-to-eat package. In addition to their alkalising effect, they are an excellent source of vitamin A, potassium, vitamin C and soluble fibre, which help lower the blood cholesterol. Vegetables like carrots, beetroot, etc. Are a powerful nutrient punch for adding calories. They work as a higher energy source as compared to any other food group. Soya beans contain phytoestrogens, which are extremely beneficial to menopausal women. Raw vegetables retain maximum number of nutrients, and the bioavailability of these nutrients is more when they are consumed in their juice form. Needless to say, vegetables are a smart source of vitamin A, C, E & K, minerals and soluble fibre. (II) Sprout Bhel Green mung sprouts Alfalfa sprouts4 tbsp Wheat flakes4 tbsp Peanutshandful Curd1 cup Cucumber1 Carrot1tbsp Tomato1 Coriander leaves to sprinkleChaat masalaa pinch Salt to tasteLime juice a dashMethod of preparation Dice cucumber, tomatoes & carrot If you cannot eat raw sprouts, then keep them in hot water for about 15 minutes. Use a dressing on it with a mixture of curd and garnish with coriander leaves. Add a dash of lime if required. About the Ingredients Sprouts are particularly beneficial for women’s blood and bone strength. When you consume sprouted pulses, you can be sure of getting high returns in terms of nutrition and vitality. Sprouts are an excellent source of protein, fibre, calcium & iron. They act as an abundant energy-giving food and help to make the blood thin. Hence, they prevent clotting and also reduce blood cholesterol. Wheat flakes are readily available breakfast cereals, which are fortified with nutrients and can be used to give that added crunch to the recipe. Peanuts contain more protein than meat and eggs for the same weight. It is rich in fibre and lecithin, which is good for reproductive and endocrine health. Peanuts are loaded with antioxidants like selenium, which helps fight against fatigue and stress. The protein in curd is readily digested than the protein in milk. Added to that, it is a rich source of calcium. Curd is an ideal energy-giving food for those people who have a sensitive digestive system. Vegetables such as cucumber, carrot, and coriander leaves are a rich source of vitamin C and A, Lycopene, iron and fibre. Lycopene is considered to be a powerful antioxidant present in tomatoes. It acts as an anti-cancer agent.
