Accept that it is going to be difficult and you will not come out of it in an overnight - Depression & Anxiety are very poorly researched areas in the field of Medicine. There is no definitive cure to this illness. Apart from that, depression is under-estimated. You will usually find people telling you to "not be depressed" or "ease down a bit" or "stay happy" when in reality it is very difficult, or rather, impossible to "not be depressed" or "to ease down" or "be happy". There is a very little chance that medication will be able to help you in which case you're lucky, else you'll have to resort to treating it all by yourself. Follow a healthy diet - Eat healthy and do not under-estimate the power of unhealthy food. Unhealthy food plays an important role in depression. You don't see the effects of smoking right away but a few years down the line you realize you're in deep trouble and so it is with unhealthy eating practices. Following a healthy diet is extremely important and also a difficult one but it pays off. Exercise daily : Ride a bicycle or go swimming or play tennis or jog or practice yoga; there are thousand other things you can do to keep yourself fit. Building muscles by gymming is not the only way to be physically fit. Regular exercise has been proven to reduce stress, ward off anxiety and feelings of depression, boost self-esteem and last but not the lease is it improves sleep. Keep healthy relationships: You do not want to hang around people who make you feel less worthy. Stay away, no matter what, stay away from negative people. There is a saying "You're the average of the five people you spend the most time with" which is absolutely true. Hang out with people who inspire you, who accept you for who you are, who are good at heart. Stay away from alcohol and drugs : Alcohol and drugs are nothing but depressants. They'll make you feel better till you're intoxicated but once the alcohol/drug is out of your body you're going to feel more depressed than before and there's a pretty good chance that you'll want to resort to alcohol/drugs again to wash that feeling out. I have been addicted to alcohol and believe me when I tell you, it is the worst thing that can happen to you. Create a long term goal and break it into tiny milestones: The saying "The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." sums it all up. Work towards your goal with thorough dedication. Books : You're on Quora and I don't think you need to be told about the benefits of reading. Persistence: Without persistence you'll never ever achieve any goals in life. Things go wrong all the time but you should not give up no matter what. As happens with depression something as trivial as missing out your morning workout will make you feel extremely bad. Things will be worse when things go really bad like having a break up or getting into an altercation with your best friend or getting fired, you'll have to be damn strong. DO NOT GIVE UP. It is going to be very difficult but keep trying until you succeed.

This is the only condition were you are required to literally do the opposite of what you feel like doing. Depression makes you want to withdraw, lie down, sleep, become lethargic, slow down, make you too lazy to even think etc. And anxiety is unresolved fear that aggravates your emotional imbalance hence along with medication you need intensive counseling to keep your motivational levels up and emotions under check. So when I suggested doing the opposite, you will need to fight this disease. You must become active; stay upright during the daylight time; meet people; never sleep during the day, and wake up by 6 am every day, play some active games, especially contact games, do physical exercises, talk to people and join some social clubs, eat more of proteins and vegetables, attend yoga classes etc. Watch a lot of sitcoms on tv or comedies and cheer yourself up. Go for excursions in groups, for outings, camps, conferences, and religious conventions. Get a pet dog and spend time training it, exercising it and relating to it. Expose yourself to some sunlight every day, at least 30 minutes but not in the scotching heat. I hope you can find someone to love and be loved too, if you are not already married. Whatever happens please incorporate these three important adaptations in your life: always be responsible, be respectful, and be functional. If you did these three things, lots of things will go well in life. Please pray and have faith in god to alleviate your sufferings. If you are still not relieved from the depression and anxiety then consider seeking therapy along with your medication. Also consider reviewing the dosage of medication with your doctor if the feelings of sinking increases.

Dear lybrate-user, meditation works excellent to treat with depression & anxiety but mind you it is a very long process. It is a very deep connect of body mind & soul. I suggest please continue the practice without fail. the experience you had is quite enviable because meditation can make you feel like it. In case you are uncomfortable, please do only guided meditation. You can try the headspace app along with that kindly add the below things in your daily routine, a good vigorous exercise program for 30 minutes every day makes the body produce natural antidepressants, but do check with your physician before venturing to attempt this. Talk therapy helps a lot to relieve the depression, but you could also have a good and reliable confidante to do the same. Encourage her to go for excursions in groups, for outings, camps, conferences, and religious conventions. Get a pet dog and spend time training it, exercising it and relating to it. Tell her to get exposed to some sunlight every day, at least 30 minutes but not in the scotching heat. Whatever happens please incorporate these three important adaptations in life: always be responsible, be respectful, and be functional. If she did these three things, lots of things will go well in life. There are two major types of depression: one induced by unexpressed sadness, and the second being from unexpressed anger. The latter type makes the person lethargic and may have suicide ideation. Please pray and have faith in god to alleviate her sufferings. If she is still not relieved from the depression, she must first go to a counselor, who will assess her to understand, if the depression is mild or severe. Based on that will help you resolve it with therapy only, or if it is severe, recommend a psychiatrist along with counseling to deal with the severity. Medication and therapy is the ideal combination to help you.

The most effective solution for dealing with anxiety for me personally was waking up early. I am not a morning person but once I tried this, I was surprised how good this made me feel. It helped me find peace and calm myself down. Having so much time in my hand I could do small things that made me happy and I felt a sense of accomplishment just by waking up early. I feel the most anxious during the night- so sleeping early really helped me tackle it to a great extent. Meditation was another thing I tried when my anxiety was at its peak. Trust me- for someone who thinks a lot, it is no joke to shut your mind down and focus on your breathing. I could concentrate for very few minutes in the beginning but my thoughts kept spiraling back. So listening to some meditation music while I meditate helped me increase concentration. It helped me analyse my recurring thoughts and gave me more clarity about them. Mostly during such times I don’t feel like interacting with anyone- thinking that nobody will really understand how I feel. It’s great if you can talk it out and rant everything going on in your mind to someone who cares to listen. Taking it all out really helps. If you’re someone who is not comfortable with addressing this with anyone, then you can try writing down all that is going on in your mind. Once you take it all out in any manner, you will feel relieved. If you feel like you are stuck between your thoughts and feel very helpless, just do something. Take a walk, call up your friends and talk about something random, play with your pet - just do something to break that cycle that is going on in your head. Do anything that will distract you even for sometime. Take action without overthinking anything. Just go for it. Being positive and thinking right is almost impossible during such times. One of the main reasons I avoid talking to people during this time is because they may feel bad/ give some positive shit which is not what I want. You know yourself the best- try starting small and appreciating small wins. Having a motivational self-talk session/ looking in the mirror and giving yourself some positivity might help. Appreciate yourself for how far you have come and remind yourself about your strengths. Try to get a balance of the basic things that need to be right- sleep, food, health and water level. Once you get these things in check it will show better results over time. Having any kind of physical activity or a workout routine will help you fight anxiety. Doing this releases endorphins which trigger a positive feeling in the body. It will also help you reduce stress, improve sleep and help in fighting with anxiety and depression. If all the above things do not help and you are still stuck with being anxious, then there is just one way out. Confrontation. Ask yourself what is troubling you and analyse your thoughts. Address it and not run away from it. You have to feel the anxiety, be curious about it and seek answers and find out what is really going on. There will always be an underlying message or something you’re trying to run away from and are too weak to confront that. No matter how much you run away from it, sooner or later you will have to face it. This is a long process and you need to be strong and have patience to tackle it. Lastly, know that you are not alone. This feeling is just temporary. Think of it as your body’s way to communicate something with you. We feel this only when we have lost perspective and when we are lacking inspiration. We have to just find ways to get out of the drama going on in our heads and gain perspective. Anxiety is something most of us go through at different levels. We are just too weak to talk about it. It is a part of being human- you are not alone.

I don't think it is unipolar depression and is more serious than that. You need to go for counseling too if you want to feel better and even recover. It is so much better and you would have developed a lot of coping mechanisms by now and may have been able to conduct yourself to the point of even enjoying life to a certain extent. Even now it is not too late, although it might be a little more difficult. Nature and the way we have been made, have fortunately built-in certain structures that let us live close to normal lives, especially up to our teens. After that, if the little signs that there is some problem were not noticed and dealt with, then the issues will come up for the last time seeking a resolution in late adolescence. But for some reason it was not handled well or in time, and therefore this situation where it has now become a permanent negative trait that has to be dealt with more aggressively. Now it is time to seek counseling in tandem with the medication; and you are to keep with the counseling until there is a resolution. Be cooperative and follow all the directives and requirements and you will see a gradual but sure improvement. You must be active and work towards your reformation. Many lifestyle changes need to be made to progress away for the condition. When you are depressed, you will feel lazy though I would like to call it lethargy. There is an inertia and lack of energy to even think, let alone act. You are required to literally do the opposite of what you feel like doing.
