Narcolepsy is a medical neurologic condition in which a person suffers from excess of sleepiness at anytime of the day. In normal sleep cycle, there are 3 stages as early stage, deep stage and Rapid Eye Movement sleep (REM) stage. Narcolepsy is very common at the age of 15 to 25 years. When a person suffers from narcolepsy, there is defect in REM SLEEP stage, which starts immediately or periodically during daytime. The cause of narcolepsy is not yet established and cannot be fully medically treated. Medicines can only help you to avoid narcolepsy at daytime. You should consult any neurophysician, for medicines and laboratory assessment for confirming diagnosis. Two tests are considered essential in confirming a diagnosis of narcolepsy are the polysomnogram (PSG) and the multiple sleep latency test (MSLT). LIFESTYLE MODIFICATIONS such as avoiding caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, and heavy meals, regulating sleep schedules, scheduling daytime naps (10-15 minutes in length), and establishing a normal exerciseand meal schedule may also help to reduce symptoms. Avoid depressions in social life and late night party or late night access to electronic devices. Practise yoga in morning and evening too. May God bless you.
