Doctor: we have baby girl of 2 years old. She had the hard stool problem since 7-8 months, whenever she doesn't pass it on someday. She tries to hold it every time n next day it hardens. Paediatric gastric doctor prescribed pegmove powder for 3-4 months. We are using it from past 4+ months, also using prune juice for softening stool. Whenever we stop pegmove, it hardens again. One main reason is she still doesn't sit when she gets sensation n holds it. We started making her sit in restroom from past few days. Can we use pegmove for longtime? Please let us know how do we proceed further. Thanks.

Hello Mr. lybrate-user, I can understand your concern regarding the issue your child has been facing. Your child is suffering from Chronic constipation. This is quite a common problem in children so please do not worry too much. About your question, yes, you can use the medication for a long time. But, let me first make you understand that this is just a temporary solution. For treating chronic constipation, a combination of measures have to be followed for best results. As listed below: 1. More High fibre diet- green leafy vegetables and fruits. Give the child lots of water. 2. Less baked and junk foods (like biscuits) 3. Proper toilet training. Fixing timings for the child to sit on the toilet seat. And never ever make the child pass stools while standing. This closes the anal muscle ring and causes more pain. The child has to sit comfortably on the toilet seat for the muscles to relax. Of importance is to continue the above measures in combination thoroughly and you will see good results in time.

Before going for any treatment, try to find out the cause for it like Excessive milk intake, less solid diet, junk food, hypothyroidism, calcium tablets, any iron syrups etc. Once you will rectify these issues, then only you will be benefitted with any treatment.
