Hello there, as you mentioned that you are active in gym, and according to the area of shoulder in which you have pain, this could be rotator cuff injury, Most probably supraspinatus injury. It is a muscle that is inserted near the area you have pain. This muscle is responsible for initial sideways elevation (abduction) of shoulder. However, it has to be clinically examined by a physiotherapist or orthopedician. Pain relieving modalities available with a physio will help. Meanwhile a break from gym and rest to the shoulder is adviced. Do not waste time before you see a physiotherapist. Thank you, and feel fre to ask anything if in doubt.

I think you are suffering supraspinatus tendinitis, avoid the exercises by which your condition getting worsen, avoid lateral dumbbell raise. Apply ice by taking in plastic packet thrice daily for 10 minutes each time. Do isometric (contraction of muscle without movement) exercises of your lateral deltoid muscle and shrugs for your trapizius muscle. Do proper stretching before and after workout. After some days start lateral raise in cable machine avoid dumbbell raise till your tendon is heal and your lateral deltoid and trapizius muscle is strength enough to over take your stress of supraspinatus muscle.
