Tooth ache: there are various reasons for tooth ache. Most commonly we look for is the decay occurring on the tooth. Which manifests as dark spots, sensitivity, cavity and pain. There are situations where decay could be on the side surfaces (we call it as contact areas) with the adjacent tooth and might not be visible from the top when you try to visualize it. Dentist might use specialized tools or even an xray to diagnose that. Also there are situations where there is no decay but the tooth can have severe pain due to various factors. But in any case a trip to a dentist would solve all those problems. Please do not self prescribe any medications as medications are not the permanent solution for this. In case of severe pain and you cannot reach the dentist quickly you can take any pain killer which will soothe you for the next few hours. Also cold waster swishing and holding will also ease your pain. But remember these measures are only temporarily. Please do not try age hold practices like usage of clove or other alternatives as they have no evidence for relieving pain and shows negative effects. I hope I have answered your query

The type of treatment you have for toothache /sensitivity/swelling will depend on the cause of the pain, so your dentist will examine your mouth and may carry out an X-ray to try to identify the problem. ?If your toothache / sensitivity/swelling is caused by tooth decay, your dentist will remove the decayed area and replace it with a filling. ?If your toothache / sensitivity/swelling is caused by a loose or broken filling, the filling will be taken out, any decay will be removed and a new filling put in place. ?If the pulp inside your tooth is infected, you may need root canal treatment. This procedure involves removing the infected pulp and then inserting a special type of filling to seal the tooth and prevent re-infection. ?If your toothache / sensitivity/swelling can't be treated using these methods, or if your tooth is impacted (wedged between another tooth and your jaw), it may need to be removed.
