Dear lybrate-user, low sugar or hypoglycemia is defined as blood sugar less than 72 mg% it is mainly diagnosed based on symptoms of low sugar. Brain use glucose only as it's food so when sugar goes low brain definitely feels hurt! palpitation, shakiness of hands, sweating and giddiness or sleepiness followed by coma or unconsciousness is a sequence of symptoms seen with progressive low sugar. We routinely never ask for serum insulin levels to diagnose hypoglycemia. Hope this helps you.
