Enamel is a protective covering over the entire surface of crown of tooth. It is 2-2.5 mm thick on surfaces involved in chewing and knife edge thin near gums. It is hardest calcified tissue in human body. Colour of enamel white to greyish white. It consists of unique proteins and hydroxyapatite crystals. With ageing attrition of enamel occurs.

Enamel protects the vitality of the tooth. Enamel is thicker in younger individuals and gets worn away gradually and becomes thinner as age advances. Hope I clarified your doubt
