It is important if you first degree relatives have cancer for most hereditary cancers. First degree means the primary family members like father, mother, siblings.
Cancer has usually 4 stages. Stage one is the localised and early disease usually with higher cure rates and stage 4 is the cancer when it has spread to distant sites like brain, bones, liver, skin, etc. Stage 4 is usually bad and can not be cured completely, usually goes in for palliative treatment.

Lybrate-user we can very well understand your concern and with the limited information provided it appears that someone in your close family is suffering. Mark us if wrong.
But you have to understand that not all cancers are hereditary. There are many which are even sporadic that means occurring for the first time. So as explained I hope it clears your doubt.
So before you get any second thoughts about you being at risk it is most important to find what cancer your relative is suffering and what is its morphology. Ask the oncologist treating them about its familial transmission. Regarding the cancer stages and grades it mean how bad the cancer is and what is its extent, along with what treatment modalities can be used for treatment. Some cancers may be hereditary like breast, ovarian, colorectal, and prostate cancer
grade I ? cancer cells that resemble normal cells and aren't growing rapidly. Grade II ? cancer cells that don't look like normal cells and are growing faster than normal cells. Grade III ? cancer cells that look abnormal and may grow or spread more aggressively.
