1. Hemorrhoid (piles) occurs when veins of rectum and anus are inflamed because of raised intra abdominal pressure due to chronic constipation, low fiber diet, heavy weight lifting, obesity, pregnancy, lack of physical activity, prolonged sitting, standing 2. Hemorrhoid may be internal when it occurs inside rectum and external when it occurs below the skin around anus. 3. It causes pain and bleeding per anum when passing stool. In internal piles there is bleeding at the time of passing stool and may not be associated with pain. 4. There are four degrees of internal piles a) 1st degree-bulges into anal canal during bowel movement, b) 2nd degree- bulges from anus during bowel movement and goes inside c) 3rd degree-bulges from anus during bowel movement and has to be pushed back inside with finger, d) 4th degree-protrudes from anus all the time treatment 1. Apply proctosedyl ointment 2-3 times daily before and after passing stool. 2. Sit in a bath tub containing warm water with little salt for some time twice daily (sitz bath. 3. Take two tea spoonful lof softovac/naturolax powder with a glass of warm water/milk in the evening or syrup duphalac 3 tsf (15ml) twice daily if there is constipation. 4.
