I am told I have cataract when I checked for vision. I wear glasses for short sight since many years. I am now 79 years old. But my vision is not affected by the cataract. Should I wait till the vision is affected for getting it operated. I also take tablet to control diabetes since three years. Please advise.

Greetings Mr. lybrate-user. I hope you are keeping safe and healthy. In my opinion, cataract is a very common complication in diabetes and one should not wait for the complications. You must get the cataract operated at the earliest and any delay is not advisable. I hope I am able to answer your query in the best possible way! take care!

Cataracts can be easily removed surgically in nearly all patients. I would usually advise people to go for surgery if it troubles them and hampers their life, but given that you have DM I would suggest in favor of early surgery to avoid any chances of uncontrolled diabetes in the future and not being able to perform the surgery at all.
