Dear lybrate-user, thalassemia is a broad group of disease in which due to congenital defect in haemoglobin the red bllod cells are easily destroyed. Which leads to persistent anaemia. Those with beta thalassemia major require l8fe long blood transfusion from a very early age. Other types generally require infrequent transfusions if the need arises. Most will do fine with filic acid supplements. Yes, bone marrow transplant is a definite cure for eta thalassemia major. If you are a carrier or thalassemia minor then avoid iron supplements and do get your partner also checked for thalassemia. Please get back for more details. Regards.
