When I have a cold I will sometimes have inflammation of my gums around my right molar and a sharp pain that shoots to my right ear. Could this be a sign of something more serious?

No it may not be serious or say life-threatening. But it can cause considerable pain in future. Take proper check up for right diagnosis and accurate treatment.
