Causes. Drooling or sialorrhea can occur during sleep. It is often the result of open-mouth posture from CNS depressants intake or sleeping on one's side. Sometimes while sleeping, saliva does not build up at the back of the throat and does not trigger the normal swallow reflex, leading to the condition. Drooling is also common in children with neurological disorders or undiagnosed developmental delay. The reason for excessive drooling seems to be related to: Lack of awareness of the build-up of saliva in the mouth, Infrequent swallowing, Inefficient swallowing, Impossibility of swallowing by obstructive diseases (tumors, stenosis), Impossibility of swallowing by neurodegenerative diseases (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis). for personal advise please consult a neurophysician

Hello Lybrate user, trickling of saliva from our mouth when in sleep is because of mouth breathing. Mouth breathing can be either habitual or due to some obstruction (like adenoids or deviated nasal septum). In order to rule out this obstruction you should visit an ENT doctor first and the doctor will tell you if their is obstruction or not and how to remove it. If the mouth breathing is habitual then you can wear a device silensor SL which will keep your mouth closed during sleep or start by using micro pore tape to close your lips before going to sleep. Hope this helps.
